| pregnant and drinking Posted: 8/5/2008 8:50:54 PM | Don't worry about what other people think. People like to judge others to feel better in a sick and self-riteous way.
I have a beautiful, healthy and happy 5 month old baby boy. While I was pregnant, I would occasionally (like once every couple weeks) split a beer with a friend. When I was 6 months along, I went to Paris for a week and enjoyed a small glass of wine every evening with dinner.
On top of that, I had a very messy split with the father, so quitting smoking was out of the question. Some days I wouldn't have one, but sometimes its hard to make it through the day without a few cigarettes to give you that "pause" feeling that lets you unwind.
That said, you're about to become a mother and opinions are par for the course. You will be faced with different decisions daily and either way you go, someone is going to think or say that you're wrong because you're not doing it the way they would... Breast or bottle, shots now or later, cloth or disposable diapers, co-sleeping, bumper pads, sleeping on tummy or back, ferberizing, babyproofing (where does it get out of hand?), babysitters, the list just goes on and on and on.
Just listen to your heart and your gut, love your child and the rest will just come to you. Screw the naysayers. My mother smoked a pack a day and ate nothing but chicken wings while pregnant and I'm a freakin' GENIUS (and modest to boot ).

| pregnant and drinking Posted: 8/8/2008 10:45:57 PM | There is no safe time nor safe amount to drink during pregnancy. FAS is VERY real and why you knowingly risk causing your unborn child such harm. You can unknowingly cause the same harm as drinking by taking certain cough and cold meds Nyquil being one of them.
There are many other things that can go worng during a pregnancy this one is preventable.
Luckily this had never happened to me, but I would have risked my job if it had come up. I would definately refuse to serve alcohol to a woman carrying a baby. It is absolutely wrong.
I have to agree, I would lose my job, because there is no way I would serve a pregnant woman alcohol.

Look it up...it can be very hard to detect and signs may not be present at the time of birth. Still very preventable...Please use your common sense and stay healthy for you and your baby. No drinking, smoking, or drugs. Just because your friend down the road had a couple glasses of wine while pregnant doesn't mean that your baby will be healthy. Looks can be deceiving. The truth is that doctors don't know exactly how much alcohol can have an affect on an unborn baby, nor do they know exactly when during a pregnancy alcohol can have an affect on an unborn baby. This 9 months is not about you...it's about a baby. Just be safe!
