i dont like anime. Then clearly this is the thread for you, thanks for contributing!
Anyway, since we've got two parallel threads running, I guess I'll post on this one this time - I've read through the posts, and I'm pleasantly surprised that a number of people have really good taste in what they watch.
On the other hand, a lot of you really need to expand your horizons... I'm not going to go all anime snob/elitist geek, but for me, reading some of these posts is akin to what I imagine a film buff would feel if you told him Deuce Bigalow was a "cinematic masterpiece"...
*cough*
To add a few more to my last list (other thread):
Bubblegum Crisis OVA (how did I forget this?! A total classic) Saishuuheiki Kanojo / Saikano / She - the Ultimate Weapon: this show isn't what I'd consider one of the best necessarily, the problem is they try to make virtually every moment as depressing and tear-jerking as possible, that it tends to make the real dramatic moments lose their effectiveness. I will say though, that the story overall is fairly solid, and it has some very good poignant moments for a romance/drama. Uchuu no Stellvia / Stellvia the Universe: at first glance it seems like it's going to be a fairly standard spaceship/mech sci-fi/comedy show, but they actually managed to give it some real depth, which makes it a worthwhile viewing. Gungrave: in an amazing twist, they took a relatively mediocre PS2 game, and created an amazing story of his history - with some great writing and cool action sequences to boot Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari / Hundred Stories / Requiem from the Darkness (domestic renaming... yeah): dramatic horror anime, some of the concepts are a tad disturbing (which is sort of the point), but it's a good show if you know what to expect, with a strange unique animation style Macross Plus (movie edition): normally I'd be horrified at the idea of watching some OVAs re-cut into a single movie, but in this one case, it actually is an improvement. The story flows better, and you don't lose any of the plot (although you do miss out on some of the musical performances, which is really a shame - but hey, that's what soundtrack CDs are for) Witch Hunter Robin: pretty sure it's been discussed here already, but I agree it's a quality show - definitely well above average (and the opening theme is really catchy)
Additionally: Outlaw Star: decent show, not necessarily a must-watch, but however it is mandatory to crank the volume up as high as humanly possible when you listen to the opening. Scryed: pretty average in every way, a fun show, but it has one outstanding aspect... Best. Eyecatch. Ever.

| Anime Posted: 9/26/2007 6:21:50 PM | For sheer badassness, I'd probably have to go with
Samurai X Berserk and Cowboy Bebop. FLCL was pretty awesome/odd also.
|
| Anime Posted: 10/2/2007 11:02:21 AM | | I like Samurai Champloo, Bleach, Blood +, damn there are so many! Kare Kano's pretty good as well. I love anime that is both cute and funny. Shin Chans good for pure comedy. It's like most animes have a girl that is super-sweet, kind, and seems genuine and you say "damn where are all the nice girls like that in real life?" Rukia from Bleach I'd totally drool over if she was a real person. Now time to collect an army of Rukia's on a site who's name I cannot mention on my friends list ^_^ | |

Cowboy Bebop is awesome and especially the episdoe Pierrot La Fou is insane. Trivia time! Mad Pierrot was a little jab at/reference to other animation studios (I guess technically "the competition") - Studio Madhouse and Studio Pierrot.

| Anime Fans Posted: 10/4/2007 3:29:38 PM | Trigun/Vash the stampede - Was always so much more going on then met the eye. Really had to watch all episodes in order to get it. Inuyasha - What can you say, it's still going as far as I last knew. Story line gets a little simplistic at times though, and they drag out everything. Cowboy bebop - Simply premise, great execution, didn't need to watch every single episode to enjoy any given one. Witch Hunter Robin - This one totally amazed me. Was expecting a cheesy anime, and was pleasantly surprised. Great story.
The original Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, Ninja Scroll
I've seen a bunch of others, but most are either too cheesy or two weird.

| Anime Posted: 10/4/2007 3:40:14 PM | I got hooked into anime in the early 90's when I saw Ranma 1/2!
I'm surprised how huge it got a few years later, and the Expo's got bigger and bigger every year!
I'm currently into an anime called Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya!

| Anime Posted: 10/13/2007 10:36:20 AM | | OMG I LOVE Anime Expos! People there dress like Anime charicters and the outfits are very attractive (Do not mistake for "slutty" as alot of women would misentrepet as, I even find people bundled up in a Hello Kitty outfit attractive! Just because Hello Kittys soooo cute! My favorite however is Rukia from Bleach :) Women in Anime tend to have this gentle feminine strength that you just can't find in the real world, and if you do find it is so rare. Women in the real world just seem very cold and boring alot of the time. Wheres the kind heartedness? Wheres you talking about all those nice things you've done like heal a pet back to health? We love hearing about that but instead get a boring diatribe about how much work sucks, something that we'd go to our friends if we wanted to hear. Oh and in Anime many women have purple, green, etc hair which is wicked pretty, and the Anime expo girls dye it as well like that ^_^ plus they are just fun places to be. | |

| Anime Posted: 6/18/2008 10:35:04 PM | Ok.. I need to know...can anyone give me a list of animes with fighting? Whether it is pure martial arts or not. Just not a female main character, no mecha, and where it is not heavily dependant on guns. Anything with hand to hand and/or swords would be awesome....also super powers like yu yu hakusho or DBZ would be fantastic!
Thanks a bunch. I am pretty sure I am gonna get some cool peeps who are gonna repeat some animes I have seen. So here is some help with that. I have seen:
Rurouni Kenshin, Samurai Deeper Kyo, DB, DBZ, DBGT, Yu Yu Hakusho, Samurai Champloo, Flame of Recca, Bleach, Naruto, etc...
Thanks a bunch guys. | |

| Anime Posted: 8/5/2008 6:06:48 PM | | I dont' get to watch it much but I LOVE the masterpieces of anime. I guess what I did manage to watch was Gravitation (I love yoai if that's how you spell it in english), Elfen Lied, Inuyasha, NARUTO!!! And I'm trying to watch Bleach but I'm too lazy to start it as well as Wolf' rain. Death Note I stopped somewhere cause I was like wtf where did THESE people come from but it was ah-may-zeng. All other anime mentioned I find it well prominent and awesome just by hearing what it's about or whatever. but yeah...I'm only currently watching Naruto Shippuuden and it's wicked! | |
|
| Anime Posted: 8/5/2008 9:11:59 PM | RANMA 1/2!!!! All of it... Ryoga

| Anime Posted: 8/28/2008 6:02:02 AM | Outlaw Star was definitely needed on this thread, much as was pointed out if not for the opening song then at least for the humor. Not the greatest out there but it couldn't hurt to watch some good story.
I'd also like to add some, as most of my collection has been said already lol.
Record of Lodoss War was great I loved the music and the general feel for the series. Blue Seed - Now this one is a bit older but it's action packed with heart felt moments, and a cool ending. Fushigi Yugi : The Mysterious Play- Sentimental as all get out but with decent action scenes and a killer heart wrenching story... Cromartie High School....... I found something my friend (who swore never to like anime) liked. It makes no sense at all so don't think too hard when watching it. It's more like a day by day thing when hanging out with your friends on those lazy days when you don't want to make sense... It's just crazy that way lol. Vampire Hunter D: Blood Lust- This movie is dynamic and absolutely amazing. From the art to the characters I loved it, and I'm really not a fan of vamps. I'm a werewolf type o guy.
Anyhoo I'm done now lol | |

| Anime Posted: 8/30/2008 4:22:32 PM | -hides-....Naruto.....I just love how darn stuborn naruto is. also it has alot of funny things (like when team 7 tried see what kakashi sensi's face looked like heheheh the blubber lips get to me) the most anoying thing thoush is WAYYYYY to many flash backs. I am working on bleach right now i think it's ok. I also liked record of lodoss war. I went to a a-con as sheiris. as far as movies Wrath of the Ninja.

| Anime Posted: 10/27/2008 8:42:26 PM | Ok.... Sadly the uk, if you don't have cable of satellite is rather poor on televisual sources of the wonder that is anime. So its hit the shops and trial and error on what looks interesting half the time and hope your not wasting £20. Some of those you've mentioned sadly have never appeared over here on dvd release. Like Outlaw Star, which I saw when I did have cable and so wish I could get a copy of.
Noir: Wonderful show, some very nice depth.
Excel Saga: Insanity, why is the writer of this show actually allowed out of the asylum.
Outlaw Star: A great joyride, sadly never released on dvd in the uk.
Ghost in the Shell: The Movies: Depth, thought provoking and potentially disturbing when you think of how the future could be. Inspirational to a lot of people everywhere.
GITS: Stand Alone Complex: Fast paced, thought provoking alternate world version of the original. Still true to the original source material.
Dominion Tank Police: Witty, fast paced and tanks. But also a world on the brink of a massive environmental collapse. Also known for the only show where the line 'Stop them their taking the piss' was uttered.
Appleseed: The more recent version, not the original. A bit weak in places but lord its fun and pretty.
Evangelion: One of the standards others try to hit. Shame the ending sucks so much. If they really are remaking it, I hope we get something more coherent.
Gantz: This is dark, but... it has potential (note to self, pick up other two dvd's)
Trigun: Silly, fun and yet it makes you think and question what your seeing.
Bleach: It's fun, a bit soap operish in a DBZ style, but it has that certain something that means it's bearable to watch a two episode fight, every week. (Note am only up to Season 2, part 1, soo don't know how if it gets worse or better)
Gunslinger Girl: Is... disturbing. Beautiful to look at, but the show has a heartbreaking quality to it as the story develop's.
Read or Die: Just all out fun. It's not meant to be thoughtprovoking, just fast and furious, but the characters draw you in and make you part of the fun.
Tenchi Miyu: It's like the worlds worst comedy of errors, in a really fun way.
Burst Angel: Mindless Big robot fun, with a lot of pretty art involved.
She: The Ultimate Weapon: Sad, poignant and a depth that makes you come back for more even if you have the feeling at the back of your mind that how this shows going to end is gonna be really, really bad.
Well may of taken up a bit more of your time than I thought so apologies and here's my current favourites on the character front.
Yomiko Readman: (Read or Die) The worlds most obssessive compulsive book reader, you have to see what she does to giant insects that try to steal her books to believe it. It distracts her so badly that the real world is viewed by her as an innocent on some levels.
Rukia: (Bleach) Tough, old, bad sketcher but actually one of the more interesting anime characters to come out. For someone thats always so been in control to suddenly have to rely on someone else to do things for her must bite badly into her sense of self. But she handles it and actually begins to thrive. Favourite moment with her. Taking on a holo so Chad and the parakeet can survive. In that action a woman that tries to hide her humanity shows how human she really is.
Well thats all gang, sorry it was such a long post.
