One anime I didn't really see mentioned is Detroit Metal City...full of hilarity and pure wrongness kekekek

But according to my animelist (I know websites not allowed, but there is a placed called myanimelist that's great for this kinda stuff), my favorites include Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, Nodame Cantabile, Ouran High School Host Club, Rurouni Kenshin (especially Tsuiokuhen), Death Note, and Fullmetal Alchemist.

Other honorable mentions that I haven't seen listed is Yakitate!! Japan and the first 8 episodes of Tengen Toppa Guerran Lagann (Kamina was sorely missed :( )

My favorite anime of all time is Neon Genesis Evangelion. Truly disturbing in spots, but definitely essential viewing. Just be careful if you're mood is less than pleasant while watching, particularly later on. I've watched that series while my dad was on dialysis, and it creeped me out.

For me it would deffinatley be the movie Akira. I saw it for the first time when I was a kid and it actually scared me, but at the same time it just makes you think about so much stuff after you've seen it. It's been one of my top favorite movies since, and I really hope the American remake doesn't suck

My favorite anime movie is Ghost in the Shell. Blows Akira right out of the water.

The original Heavy Metal movie is cool, too.

Hajime No Ippo is a great action/drama boxing anime. Also "Now & Then, Here & There" is a excellent one. Prepare to have several tissue boxes for the second one. It's about children and how they deal with war.

Street Fighter-not the crap-filled American version that was on the USA network years ago, the Japanese version.

Bleach-Haven't watched it much since 07, but it was one of my favorites when I did follow it, preferably the Japanese version as I don't like the American dub-overs.

My favourite animes/characters would have to be:

Death Note - L (no explanation needed)
D.Gray-Man - Lavi, Krory

I've a soft spot for DBZ as well although i feel GT was poor in comparison.

I'm impressed with how much anime has changed over the decades. My brother is a big fan and I've enjoyed a lot of the stuff he's gotten that we've watched. The stories are better, the "background" graphics have gotten really good in some, the characters are more interesting, etc. When I was growing up, most anime to me was pretty lame. (in the 80's)

I loved Witch Hunter Robin....but I love anime with sexual/romantic tension. (even though some of the female characters border on a little too young for me)
Gantz
Gankutsuou
Metropolis
Gunslinger Girls
Witchblade
Voices Of A Distant Star
Samurai 7
Escaflowne
Rahxephon
Wolf's Rain
Samurai Gun
Requiem From The Darkness
Now, Then, Here, And There
Speed Grapher
Berserk
Cowboy Bebop
Karas
Appleseed
Ergo Proxy
Elfen Lied
Ghose In The Shell.... just to name a few I've seen over the past few years.

I know I'm forgetting some.... The only thing that bothers me with some of them, is the "young girl, older guy" relationship...but that seems to be common theme in a lot of anime. But hey, if you can get past the barely disguised pedophile element in some, they're great stories! (I'm being sarcastic of course) Nothing inappropriate ever happens with these girls, but they do tend to have them "fall in love" with main male characters who are much older then them. Just a tad creepy sometimes.

But a lot of the characters in anime are a little too young (boys too). But I realize that's because the "tweens" and "teenagers" in Japan love this stuff, along with so many of the mangas they are based on.

Anime has come a long way though from when I was a kid.
