| Just for fun: What was your first car? Posted: 6/25/2007 9:29:55 PM | What a fun question!
My first car was an old green Datsun B210 (either can't or don't want to recall the year!)... my grandma's dependable old "Bessie Mae", purchased at a fair price with my own money, when grandma could no longer drive.
She was a stick shift... and I lived WAY up in the hills... but I loved the challenges of driving her! When everything started going on her at once and I needed dependable transportation, I sold her ... for a small profit.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane! -p.

| Just for fun: What was your first car? Posted: 6/27/2007 4:44:52 PM | I was 18, just past the driving test (both) and my father picked me up with a 1956 VW Beetle, handed me over the keys and said ..here you go, that's yours. He then tought me all I have to know in case I have to fix something on the car....it was not very difficult then because you could see and reach every part.
I now drive a 2001 New Beetle. It's a fun car but unfortunately I can't do anything myself anymore, I can not even exchange a light bulb. Now I have to bring the car either to the VW service station or to a technician who studied at the "University of VW"..... darn $$$$$$$$$

| Just for fun: What was your first car? Posted: 6/28/2007 11:03:55 PM | | A 1986 white Volvo. I used to have to hit the front light to make the windshield wipers stop working, and half of the time, that would also make the A/C stop too! Pain in the ass, that car was. | |

| Just for fun: What was your first car? Posted: 6/29/2007 12:12:13 AM | Wow, guess I take the cake for early model's. ~ LOL.....Started with a 36 Ford Coupe, which I cut down, chopped the top and souped up the V-8 60 engine. I rebuilt the engine with dual carbs, aluminum hi compression heads and a 3/4 race cam. She had straight pipes and you could hear me coming about a 1/2 mile away.
Craziest thing I ever did with that car was I was working on the steering column and had the steering wheel off. As I recall it was a Saturday afternoon. Well in the process of working on the column, I screwed up the spline, so I couldn't get the steering wheel to fit back on the steering shaft. Saturday night was a big night down at the A & W Root Beer stand and outlaw road racing, trying to impress the girls.
That night I drove the car with a pair of vice grips pliers clamped to the steering column and in fact engaged in a couple of drag races that night. The trick was, the faster you drove, the less effort it took to steer the car. ~ .......I think back on those days and know that only by the grace of God did I survive.

Sold it to a friend, when I went off to school. He rolled it and ended up cutting the chopped top off and not sure what eventually happened to the car or for that matter what happened to him over the years.

Ah, the good old days. Got a job at 16, after 6 months, took out a $1,500 loan and "inheritated" so to speak the family T-Bird. It had been up on blocks for almost 2 years. Frozen engine and a trans. that needed to be rebuilt. It ended up taking $1,800 but when she was done, she was mine, pink slip and all...
Went through my "badboy" stage, took on anything, beat anything, GTO's, Corvettes, Mustangs. It didn't matter. Geeze, I'm really lucky I made it through those 18 months.. Then SHE came along.. Her name was Shelby. Taught me a big lesson. I pretty much straightened out after that lol...

| Just for fun: What was your first car? Posted: 7/4/2007 11:07:18 AM | My first car with a '72 3/4 ton pickup. Drank gas like there was no tomorrow. Painful to park and I was deathly afraid that I was going to hit someone and not even know it. The latter would have put an end to my driving as I would no longer be able to afford insurance. I have no doubt that this monster was the seed to my long standing dislike of cars and driving in general.
My next car was an '88 VW Jetta. Efficient. Easy to park, corners I can see, still very reliable. 'Still didn't make me *want* to drive, however.
I drive an '05 Civic now. For all intents and purposes, it is a modern version of the '88 Jetta. My preferred transport is still person-power: bike, skate, walk.

| Just for fun: What was your first car? Posted: 7/7/2007 12:28:27 AM | I purchased my first car in 1978 while stationed in Kalifornia. My car was a Ochre 1978 Datsun 260-Z. I got it for under $3,000. It didn't last me more then a few months, I wrecked it on ice in Wyoming on my way to MinotAFB, ND. Demolished the car, but I limped away alive. A few months later I went out and got a Datsun 280-Z, that one was wrecked in Texas by a drunk, and I walked from that one too. I currently own another Datsun 280-Z, and a Bradley GTII. | |

'57 T-Bird
a 1964 Corvair Spyder (turbo charged) the leather seats
Both of these cars are considered collector cars today. They would be worth a whole lot more than you paid for them, in todays market. Plus, they would make great Show Circuit Vehicles, restored to original condition.

But I consider my first real car to be a 1988 Camaro SC convertible that I own to this day and am presently restoring. 1 of 1100, kind of special to me.
