| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 5/7/2007 6:35:07 PM | It must be a generational thing. There's nobody my age on there, is there? My kids set me up on it, but I have no idea how to use it. I,ve been tagged by them and their friends but I hate to tell them , I had them all tagged long ago! Just kidding ! I get a kick out of it, the pics are cute and the groups to join are interesting . Apparently I belong to "I like Monkeys" "Surviving in Calgary" and "Tim Hortons supports the troops". Hey, write something on my wall - I promise I won't wash it off ! | |

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 5/7/2007 8:41:17 PM | | Facebook has me a little amused now. I was irritated with it at first as I was receiving many requests. I can't even keep up to MSN! I finally set up an account just to see what it was all about. Since that time, I have met up with people I NEVER would ordinarily have found or maybe even spoke to again. My brother and his gfriend talk to each other on their 'walls' quite often (honeymoon stage lol) and send me messages on my 'wall' as well. It encourages others ... and well, my new and old friends, family, extended family, co-workers AND pof friends end up "virtually meeting each other". As I said, its amusing. I don't put any personal info in there though (address, albums, etc.). | |

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 5/8/2007 2:07:42 AM | | For a long time I didn't know what it was till I joined up recently. To me it's like that other site my space, but without the fancy stuff. I don't see the big deal of it. I actually prefer my space because you can create a unique profile that suits your personality with graphics etc. I mainly joined to find out more info on my favourite bands or discover new ones. | |

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 5/24/2007 11:27:37 AM | yes, can become addictive. But I have been reunited with alot of high school friends and from that was informed of a reunion for graduates 20 years ago...(wow, now I feel old..lol) | |

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 5/24/2007 11:33:39 AM | I'm so hooked on it's embarrassing. I even got in touch with a girl from preschool. I don't use it as much as I did in the beginning. At first I was on there every hour, checking to see what others were doing, updating my profile etc etc. Now I just log in a couple of times a day to poke a few friends here and there.
When I log into myspace (once in a blue moon) I can't get over how crappy it is compared with .

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 5/24/2007 11:36:32 AM | | Okay what happened? I lost words at the end of my post. Or maybe I'm just really tired and thought I'd written a bit more coherently.... | |

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 5/24/2007 3:52:08 PM | Awesome. Today, I hooked up with my first roomate when I moved out of my parent's place back in the early 1990's...and, also another few friends from a bar that used to exist back in the 90's and is long since gone... I also am exchanging msgs witha few ppl I didn't expect to hear from again...found me on Facebook and now we're 'friends'. Like everything, it has it's advantages and disadvantages. | |
|
| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 5/24/2007 11:20:38 PM | Yeah.. just doesn't have what myspace has to offer.... reason being that is truely for you to connect with people you went to school with. It used to be a VIP website ... haha.... it was college students only, but now high school students sign up... and people even sign up with networks like the "Pittsburgh Network". So, the site has lost its luster a bit.
Anyway.. a feature it does offer that is pretty useful is when adding pictures to an album you can "tag" your friends that are in the picture so that they & the friends on their list can view the pictures they are tagged in. I like that. Otherwise the site is pretty annoying.
|
| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 5/25/2007 7:41:54 AM | I don't know if I would say that I am hooked but I have definitely been catching up with some people I haven't seen in years. I have re-connected with people from middle school and high school, people I grew up with back in my counrty before coming to Canada 16 years ago.
I like it and check it everyday but I wouldn't say I was addicted. In the mornings I give myself half and hour to check my hotmail and and then I work. At lunch I surf and check it again and after lunch its back to work, then right before I leave I check it again......so that's three times during the day and then before bed....ok so four times....and never over an hour!!!
It's cool, can be addictive but like everything you have to take it in doses and try to remember real life is happening around you!
|
| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 5/25/2007 8:54:30 PM | | Haven't heard of it til the other day when a friend invited me to join! Seriously addicting, much like this darned site! hehehe | |

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 6/4/2007 1:56:57 AM | NO THANKS TO Facebook !!!!!!! Did you guys catch the article about that was on the news Wednesday May 30, 2007??? It aired on 660 News here in Calgary and it was also broadcast on A-Channel TV. This is FOR REAL!! It's a HUGE eye-opener and you guys might want to DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT ASAP... When you sign up for a account and click on the "I accept" button where their licensing agreement is---- 1. YOU GIVE THEM PERMISSION TO USE ANYTHING THAT IS POSTED ON FOR ANY, AND I MEAN ANY, PURPOSE THEY WANT TO USE IT FOR, AND YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO REFUSE THEM USING ANYTHING YOU POST. 2. You also have to give your email address AND PASSWORD.... YOU'VE JUST GIVEN FULL ACCESS TO YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT!!!!!! THEY CAN GO INTO YOUR EMAIL ANYTIME YOU WANT AND DELETE STUFF, CHANGE STUFF, FORWARD INFORMATION TO WHOEVER THEY WANT----- HUGE SECURITY BREACH!!!! Essentially, by signing up for you've allowed " Big Brother" to spy on you, publish your personal information anywhere they want, and make it easier for identity theft to happen.. JUST SAY "NO" TO Facebook!!!!!
I don't have an account, and knowing this, I'm glad that I don't.

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 6/4/2007 1:58:50 AM | | I personally havent gotten faecbook nor myspace. I just do pof now. But gamers are everywhere. Just like the bar right??????? | |

1. YOU GIVE THEM PERMISSION TO USE ANYTHING THAT IS POSTED ON FOR ANY, AND I MEAN ANY, PURPOSE THEY WANT TO USE IT FOR, AND YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO REFUSE THEM USING ANYTHING YOU POST.
You can change this in your privacy settings on the website. Easily disallowed.
Only if you want them to search through your email account and check your address book for friends who may be on there. Easy rule of thumb, never give your email password out. Look for them manually. Also they have a privacy policy regarding the contact list. It is not MANDATORY for them to have your email address and password. You give it up on your own if you want to find people.
Don't post in caps. It's yelling, rude and annoying as heck.
|
| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 6/4/2007 11:12:33 PM | Well personally i LOVE , way better than msn space, my space nexopia etc.. For me its more about keeping in contact with people i know... you can change the settingas so that ONLY people from your address book can view it! | |

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 6/5/2007 11:44:09 AM | | I don't like Myspace, but I occasionally go there to look up a few friends. I stick with Livejournal. One thing I really hate about Myspace is the pages with embedded music... if I'm just surfing, I don't want to be suddenlly blasted with music that I didn't ask to hear. | |
|
| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 6/5/2007 4:05:25 PM | My understanding is that when you click on the "I accept" button to create your account, you've just given them that access as stated above.
I stand firm on my earlier statements.

I have an account and personally I didn't like the fact that you had to put your full name( I didn't btw) I've actually seen friends of my friends that are on dating sites, seen their pics, and thought, wow ....if I was some guy she dated that she tried to avoid because she thought he was rather strange they could very easily get a persons name and find them. I don't know, maybe I'm too paranoid, but I see it as something that isn't very private

You may stand firm on your earlier statements but you are standing firm on wrong information. As stated above you can easily change that access to information by changing your preferences in the privacy section.

You're not forced to put your full name, much as you stated you didn't. You can put in just a last initial or even make up a name. Many people I know there just go by a last initial for privacy reasons much like you stated.

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 6/14/2007 7:12:17 AM | Count me in as being addicted ! The first time someone sent me an invitation to join I sent a message back saying thanks but no thanks. I thought was for kids! So I get another invite but this time from someone I used to work with in Toronto! We had each others email address but the extent of our communication over the last 5 years consisted mostly of forwarding jokes. So decided to check it out and see what all the hype was about! It's amazing and despite all the paranoid people in this thread I would never give it up! You only give out as much info as you are comfortable to give!
While writing this post a thought occured to me! There are some saftey concerns with woman dating guy's they meet online! You don't know who they are and they could be scammers or worse! So I meet a lady she wants to get to know me I send her a link to my profile and bingo she can see 25 of my family and friends! If this doen't make a lady feel secure and be able to trust me then she shouldn't be internet dating!!!

| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 6/15/2007 7:34:16 AM | I hate it.
I hate cliques, and that's what is (among other, more insidious things...).
Out of curiousity, I DID try deleting my account... and no option exists.
The only way to get your account terminated, so far as I know, is to create a group that's blatantly racist, or is otherwise a "hate group", directed at attacking someone or a party.
I may go with that (fraudulently, because I'm not actually racist) as a last resort... but I don't want it to come to that :(
Ironically, I've started a group on just now, called:
Tell me, have you tried to "DELETE" your account?
For any interested in petitioning the system to allow for the removal of yourself (and corresponding submitted private info/data) from their database(s), I suggest joining the group.
|
| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 6/15/2007 7:35:51 AM | Edit:
Sorry, the group is called:
ell me, have you tried to "DELETE" your account?
|
| Facebook phenomenon :D Posted: 6/15/2007 4:01:26 PM | | You can deactivate your account by going to the "account" tab at the top and scrolling to the bottom where it says deactivate my account. Granted, I'm not sure if that deletes it or just puts it on hiatus as I've never tried it, but it might be something for you to try if you haven't already. | |
