Loving this post. Have had some of these same issues. I do enjoy the secondhand stuff sometimes too.
Always be picky in those stores and watch for "flaws" in the clothing. One time I grabbed something thought would be great. Just to find it was cut wrong. Not really repairable.

Find for myself shop in the mens section for jeans. Cheaper and more basic. Women's jeans keep changing style. I hate this "new look" where sits below the waist. Always feel like have to pull them up. Plus I'm fairly tall so need the 34inch inseam. Something they charge more for or is none in womens.

Thanks again

I LOVE all the ideas here! Thrift shops are a great source of multiple styles of clothing all under one roof.

Here's another simple, cheap & cheerful trick. Make a top your own: purchase buttons at the fabric store and sew on your own. You can fancy up and / or reflect your own style i.e. pearl heart-shaped buttons if you're more homespun.

1) increase your budget- put some money into looking good
2) decrease the oversize- put some effort into looking good
3) buy your clothes from a country that meets your save the world expectations

Poster, you don't have to spend a lot to look nice....and adding color to your wardrobe is nice...you know, like reds or blues or greens. :)

I know lots of women in my size range and I get handme downs some of it is "label" stuff. I also know what I like and sometimes, I will spend more for a nice pair of jeans or whatever... I don't really know if others find my clothing "cool".

(I have had some "what were you thinking" reactions though )

I prefer to go to the "Designer" stores and try on their clothing to get the tag numbers and sizes measured, then I look on the internet, especially Ebay to find the ones that fit, at much more reasonable prices. When I was younger I used to like Goodwill/thrift stores as the prices are Very affordable, and most of the jeans are already broke in and comfortable.

It really doesn't matter what other people think of what you wear, unless you are wearing something that doesn't really fit the occasion, or isn't 'appropriate'. ie: a man wearing pantyhose on his head, and a womens bra around his neck... As long as you feel comfortable, and what you are wearing, accentuates your good attributes. ie: for overweight people, wearing vertical stripes, as opposed to horizontal, or a color that brings out the warmth in your skin tone, rather than light colors which may make you look pale...

The problem seems to be if one wants to shop with a conscience then one must be willing to pnny up obscene amounts of cash for bland clothing. I struggled with this myself and have decided that I will have to save the planet with my other purchases (or non purchases.) I practice discardia and rarely buy things just to buy them. I give away stuff regularly, eat locally and drive a tiny fuel efficient car. I cut myself a break on apparel and accessories (the only caveat being I won't wear anything from animals. Which means goo goobs of arcylic and pleather for moi!)

I agree with the idea of spending a little more and buying classics. I don't mind reguarl stores, but I do seem to have a uniform: pencil skirts, fitted tops and boots (subsitute jeans or wide leg pants) which I wear all the time. I spent more money on things I tend to want to buy over and over and have found that I actually buy less and less.

I only buy clothes when I have to. I don't like clothes shopping. Plus, buying clothes means money away from my other hobbies. I try to make all my clothes be multi-functional. I prefer things I can comfortably wear on my motorcycle or hiking. I also have "fashionable" friends, so I'm very available when they are cleaning out their closets.

I love BeingJulia's advice. She is spot on!! Just because you're large, curvy, big boned, fat whatever label you chose to use there is no reason to be FRUMPY!! Appearance definitely matters. It sounds cliche but if you look good you feel good! Not only looking good, but as Julia already touched on body language is huge! C'mon people please gain some esteem. Nobody wants to go out with a needy person that lacks confidence. You know who you are. If you are confident, you walk tall, shoulders back, chest out, making eye contact, talking to everyone in the room. You have a smile on your face almost all the time. Your a joy to be around. And ladies, having a great good fitting outfit on is bonus for this. Another tip...make sure you have a great fitting bra...and a sexy one at that! Even if nobody is going to enjoy it but you, trust me...it will up your confidence and sex appeal just knowing you have it on and nobody else knows it.
Sorry I digress, however, it's all interconnected...we must be comfortable in our own skin...confident in who we are...not needing anyone to complete us, and once we are there, then we can welcome someone else into our life.
....If.... we're dressed well enough to attract them upon first impression.

Addendum to previous post...

As far as dressing well on a budget...you'd be amazed at how little i spend on my clothing...I basically clearance shop when it is 40-50% already marked down prices. I know you may have issues with the stores, but you can find some great deals for us 'curvy' girls. I just picked up a 100% silk dress regularly $130 for $19. The good deals are out there, it's like a treasure hunt...have fun!!

You have to work at it. When I'm serious about putting together a new combo it sometimes takes months. You might pick up a sweet pair of shoes but have nothing to go with it and so you keep on looking for a matching hat and a pair of pants and shirt that would work well.

If you're budget minded then you might hit up a thrift store and mix in some throwback sweaters/jackets. You can't go wrong with a faded blue pair of jeans whatever your style.

The OP deleted himself some months ago, but he was a HE. I don't think bras were designed for men to wear...!

Style is whatever you make it. Myself I shop in cheap stores like primark and i do own a few designer items that i bought in catalogue sales and stuff cos i havent got loads of cash to throw round! I wear hats alot, fancy shoes that no one else buys that are quirky fun and cheap.

I agree about charity shops too. I never used to go in but I love them now I find real bargains and stuf thats more individual. Tie dyin, stitching sequins on things and stuff. Redesign your clothes. Handbags is another major thig of mine again I buy mine from primark i went out last night with a gorgeous bag that cost me a pound! Also belts and accesories can change an entire look. Experiment with make up to! There is loads you can do if you take time to do it and i understand where your comin from.

I once was 16 stone and sizee 22 (uk size) and I found clothes to be alot more expensive than for my 9 stone frame (size 8-10) cos i had to buy from evans and the likes! When i was losing weight i couldnt afford to keep buyin clothes so i had to customise so get your sewing kit out and add some bling!

Being oversized isn't as big a deal as you think.. They actually have oversized clothes at thrift stores or consignment shops just for oversized sizes. You know I think you have to look appropriate for your size, but in the end if you aren't happy it will show in you.
