Posted: 5/6/2007 4:07:04 AM | I do think much tougher sentencing should be introduced for anyone that would commit any sort of crime towards a child. It is very unfair for the families who suffer the loss of a child/children in this way only to see their children’s killers given a punishment that in their eyes and most other people’s eyes doesn’t fit the crime, and I do think a crime like this does warrant no less than corporal punishment.

| 6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon.... Posted: 5/6/2007 4:22:46 AM | Some of you are very naive!
Do you really think capital punishment would be an incentive to banish these types of appalling crimes? Mr Pierpoint was getting money for nothing then if when we did have capital punishment his services were not called on!!
Don't get me wrong, I don't think these types of people should be mollycoddled in luxury hotels, I mean Category A prisons, but I have NO faith in the British legal system. A country that allows hijackers to stay and claim their human rights were violated but jail you for not paying your TV licence should NEVER be in charge of a sysem that puts people to death.
There have been stories where PARENTS have killed their children because they were "ill" and have gotten off scot free; a soilder who killed his wife and new born baby, the child was crying and "getting on his nerves", but the judge didn't punish him because he "had suffered enough".
There would be one rule for women another for men, one rule for the rich and another for the poor and certainly one for whites and another for ethnic minorities.
Change the system to one where life means life, without luxuries, without contact from anyone, without any kind of comfort, only contact to be with a lawyer and you would see the crime rate drop!

An excellent point!

We already have that situation, unfortunately.
Too many women have excuses for their behaviour based entirely on their gender - and see how few times the non-whites are convicted of racially-motivated attacks.

where are the prison places gonna come from to house them ? they're already so full that they're letting paedos and rapists and god knows who else back out on the streets again , well before their time , because there simply aren't enough prisons , and by the time they've made the prisons they need, they will be filled 10 times over , and why should the taxpayer have to pay to keep a childkiller dry anyway ? they should rot.

| 6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon.... Posted: 5/6/2007 4:50:42 AM | I have children and I don't want to imagine what it would be like if anyone were to harm them. Putting someone to sleep peacefully is not a punishment to me.
If we emptied the prisons of people who have not paid their council tax, tv licences, nicked a pound of cheddar out of Tesco's etc we would free up space in our prisons. The criminals behind bars are being paid for by the taxpayer anyway regardless of their crime.
Don't get me wrong I'm not advocating touchy feely sessions with these monsters, in theory ANYONE who takes anothers life - regardless - should be hung, drawn and quartered in my book, but for reasons I have stated above I wouldn't trust this system to carry it out!

| 6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon.... Posted: 5/6/2007 4:58:04 AM | if something can be proven to a point beyond reasonable doubt then i see no reason for not bringing back the death penalty into this country. the Americans system allows a long and drawn out appeals system and the criminal spends a long time on death row. i think in the case of multiple murders then we do not yet have a punishment to fit the crime and we the populace know that. i can TO A DEGREE understand where an incident may occur where one person may take the life of another person, but when that becomes multiple people then i think it has to be treated differently. we have jailed people in this country for crimes to see them cleared later in their sentence by forensic evidence etc., but if it can be categorically proven without recourse then surely capital punishment is the ultimate answer. | |

| 6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon.... Posted: 5/6/2007 5:01:44 AM | It's never going to be easy when life is taken. Life for a life or incarceration. personally I'm in favour of capital punishment, as with neuclear weapons it's a deterrant, that in extreme cases will have to be used.
The problem is our justice system is far from perfect. Unless there is no doubt at all it cannot be used. Paedophilles those that are incarcerated because of a mental illness that makes them a risk I agree should be put down like you would a mad dog.
In my view gun crime too should carry a mandatory sentence akin to attempted murder, and murder. My reasoning being, anyoneone with an ilegal firearm is intending to use it. If this penalty was death would so many people be willing to carry guns?

| 6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon.... Posted: 5/6/2007 5:17:33 AM | | even in the harshest prison circumstances , life itself would be too much of a luxury for these sick b4stards. To be able to see the sun outside their cell , and hear the birds chirping , and feel breath in their lungs , whilst 2 kids were robbed of it , would seem lenient to say the least. Even in solitary confinement they would still have luxuries those kids will never have. It just doesn't seem right to let animals like this continue to live. | |

| 6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon.... Posted: 5/6/2007 5:43:01 AM | Capitol punishment, two reason for not bringing it back:
1. Once the perpetrators of the crime is gone they suffer no more, let them suffer in incarceration. 2. Miscarrages of justice, not every convicted person is guilty, you can't bring them back if you kill them.

| 6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon.... Posted: 5/6/2007 5:54:29 AM |
We cant bring back capitol punishment because You missed out the main reason why capital punishment is not a viable option; it sounds good in theory, but in practice it has a disturbing habit of exascerbating situations rather than proving a deterrent. I.e.; Crime will still be committed, but people will go to more extreme lengths not to get caught or be recognised.
A few years ago at an old address, one of my neighbours disturbed a burglar who had crawled in through an open bathroom window (it was a roasting hot summer) at about 4am in the morning. He was stabbed approx 14 times with a screwdriver as the "miscreant" involved desperately tried to escape, eventually doing so by using a chair to smash the front (double glazed) window.
Increased consequences sound great in practice, but only until you realise that the target audience are not sensible minded people, and not overly endowed with common sense or bogged down by little things like ethics.
2, then we need to disolve the human rights act But that would be a good thing...

Posted: 5/6/2007 7:04:56 AM | its so fookin discuting that some sick b*rstards can do this to another human and to a children well i think they are fooked up in te head. i personally think that if someone kills someone else that they should be killed .... car acciedents and stuff like that then they shouldnt but if someone killed someone with the intend to do so then thats when they should not have to rite to live!!!
But what really gets me is how someone can harm another human like that or take someones life ..... its totally beyond me and makes me ill

ok well i will give them rights.. the right to die..so its their human righs yet they are lower than dust. what about the victims? wheres are their rights?
Reading the news on the BBC website there is no mention of murder, so you are being the judge, jury and executioner. This is unfair as you actually have little facts, typical of people who jump up and say "Bring back hanging"
Wait and see what progresses, and don't run in blind!

| 6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon.... Posted: 5/6/2007 7:32:10 AM | But what about the remarks I made in my 1st post, hanging is not punishment it is a way out of living in hell (incarceration) and also the dead can't be brought back if mistakes are made, look at recent figures on miscarriages of justice; 10's of people would have been innocently hung if we had the death penalty.
Also, face it, it was this recent news which made you write this post, so you are being emotive about something that you have NO facts about QED
The post title is totally wrong "6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon..." as you are believing it is murder, it is this kind of thing which leads to miscarriages of justice!

And the way in which you wish to demonstrate your belief that it is wrong to kill people, is to kill people?
Be cheaper than placing them in prision or letting them back out onto the streets like they are doing so with Paedophiles.

Cheaper? Let's hang everyone who gets more than a 6 month sentence then, it's cheaper than prison. What a ridiculous comment.
Don't really want to get into the whole capital punishment debate, especially on such a recent and emotive issue, so will just present a couple of pertinent facts -
Capital punishment is touted as a deterrent, yet the USA's population of capital prisoners increases year after year.
A black male teenager from Harlem will live longer if he is sent to Death Row than if he remains on the streets.

Once you have been hung your trauma stops, your punishment stops, nothing can hurt, upset or affect you, that is an easy way out. If you are alive, you have to face life everyday, the hurt, the knowing you will not be going on a sunny holiday to Italy Spain etc. The hate of other towards you for your crime can still be felt, as your brain is working and your feelings are there. Why did infamous people like Fred West and Harold Shipman commit suicide, because of this pain, it was the easy way out for them, they knew dieing would stop their hurt inside!
now with todays advances in technology it is easier to prove they did so there really can not be the mistakes of old.dna is one. So tell me how much do you know about DNA? Are you aware that DNA recently have proved floored in several cases, for many reasons. DNA can't and will not be taken as 1oo% evidence it only proves certain things like contact, Cross contamination is a big problem and also it is not accurate on timing, it is a tool not proof.

| 6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon.... Posted: 5/6/2007 8:52:56 AM | Capital punishment is not a deterrent and the USA is a prime example of this ..
The dozen states that have chosen not to enact the death penalty since the Supreme Court ruled in 1976 that it was constitutionally permissible have not had higher homicide rates than states with the death penalty, government statistics and a new survey by The New York Times show.
Indeed, 10 of the 12 states without capital punishment have homicide rates below the national average, Federal Bureau of Investigation data shows, while half the states with the death penalty have homicide rates above the national average. In a state-by- state analysis, The Times found that during the last 20 years, the homicide rate in states with the death penalty has been 48 percent to 101 percent higher than in states without the death penalty.
The study by The Times also found that homicide rates had risen and fallen along roughly symmetrical paths in the states with and without the death penalty, suggesting to many experts that the threat of the death penalty rarely deters criminals.
The penalties for more serious crimes DO need to be far more severe but putting people to death makes little or no difference and the victim is still just as dead... Prison needs to be a far harsher regime of manual labour and the bare basic of human requirements ... Any and all privileges should be removed and the length of sentence given should be the length of sentence served... These 2 babies are dead whatever happens to the adults in whose care they were left.. Maybe the failings lie with social care, whatever, who ever is deemed responsible should never walk the streets again...

| 6 year old and 1 year old murdered in croydon.... Posted: 5/6/2007 1:07:24 PM | Seems to me that death would be the easy way out for these people. Never having to think about what they've done again.
In prison crime against children is the mother of all crimes. Other inmates will make their lives a living hell. Thats a much more fitting punishment.
