| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 6/9/2008 9:31:02 AM | "Just want to know why people hate a genre they don't understand."
You hit the nail on the head. People have, and always will ,marginalise, mistrust and criticise that which they do not understand. This matter highlights the public and media need to direct its prejudices upon something, to scapegoat and label. Teen/youth culture is easy target.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 7/21/2008 8:44:30 AM | | I used to be emo in highscool for about 2 yrs. People tend to hate the guys emo more where i live because most of them are gay. A lot of people have the wrong idea about emo males cause of the way they dress, they have the impression that they're gay and tend to create emo bashing groups. I love white emo men, wish i could find one. I just love their hair the rings on their lips everything about them makes me melt. Your quite right they don't understand so if you don't know something you'll hate it cause your inferior | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 7/21/2008 3:36:32 PM | Fugazi is often called for the emo band. Other emo bands that are really good are rites of spring, jawbreaker, samiam, ignition, elliot, and dag nasty. Then it went all over the place and came back with lifetime, sunny day real estate, the promise ring, and jets to brazil.
The stuff most people call emo, isn't.
And to call a type of music a style of dress, is retarded.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 8/11/2008 3:55:18 PM | I always find these kind of questions interesting. Why do people hate country, or hip hop, or metal, or classical. Because people "hate" lol.
We love to judge, give our opinions, and try and prove that our point of view is "better" than everyone else's. Its just human nature. Everyone does it from time to time, its unavoidable.
But like the post above asks, "Just want to know why people hate a genre they don't understand". You answered your own question. We "hate" what we don't understand. Granted we do hate somethings we do understand, or presume to understand, but most of the time we see something and go "WTF...man i hate that." I for one grew up in the nu-metal era. Korn, Deftones,Limp Bizkit, Staind and a host of other bands. Music doesn't get much winier than that(well not deftones)...but if your screaming to the point that hairs' rise on the back of your neck, well thats pretty bad ass...or so we thought. But todays "emo" is more of the pop variety. Heaven forbid we get guys who can actually sing(regardless if its falsetto or not lol). Sure the optics of skinny jean, eyeliner wearing, long bangs falsetto sings kids does seem a little wimpy...but does anyone remember a little thing called hair metal. You know great manly bands like Twisted Sister. Now that was makeup and eye liner. I'm not saying....i'm just saying...
At any rate...the world would be a better place if we stopped being so damned ignorant before we start judging everything...Have an opinion but be mature and respectful of the fact is is just that - an opinion.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 8/11/2008 6:14:11 PM | and being diferent
Then why are you all exactly the same and exactly as mainstream as eachother?
Simple case of "I'm going to conform to being "different" by following a subculture!"
I'm usually against hating an entire sub-culture, or an entire genre, but as always, there's an exception to every rule. Y'all are jus' so damn irritating!
It's like.. they're whiney just for the sake of being whiney. They all seem to be either anorexic or obese. They all seem to think that moping around and generally being emo makes you special, or something and none of them realise it's just a pre-teen phase they're going through. They think they're all being different, yet selling themselves out to overly-corporate bands like my Chemical Romance and other whiney little emo bands that I'm sick of hearing about, wherever I go, that wouldn't even exist if little emo kids weren't mistaken into thinking they produce good music and give them the only thing they're interested in; money because their friends tell them it's kewl, and it'll make them different by listening to them, like every other emo.
Whatever they think they're doing that makes them so original and "different", has been done before, a thousand times over.
To add to that, people look at then and associate them with metal. An emo kid wouldn't last 5 minutes in a real metal pit. It's degrading!
Remember, kids, it's along the road, not across the street. Do us all a favour.[/rant]

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 8/12/2008 10:38:24 PM | Ahhhhh remember the good old days when weezer was considered emo.
If you want to find what I think is the original emo song, look up "The Quiet Room" by Alice Cooper.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/10/2008 2:15:37 AM | Well, though it is basically because they complain too much, there are other splendid reasons, related to complaining and not so, that are simply perfect justifications for antipathy.
1. For starters, they identify themselves solely with music and adhere to a specific dress code as a result. that is kind of revolting. 2. None of the music is any good. The instruments are horrid, and the voices have a batlike screech to them. The target audience is pre adolescents to early teens, and the singers are usually complaining about high school age problems. So it is essentially music for teeny-boppers, except you hear references to suicide occasionally. 3. Many of them are on the verge of Codependency, and anyone that desperately pathetic that they need to make someone feel sorry for them in order to feel comfortable should be considered at least a little obnoxious. 4. Even if they have real problems that they can legitimately complain about, such as sexual or physical abuse or constantly being picked on, they always turn the hatred inside. They glorify moping about and cutting themselves (I don't care if every single song doesn't pertain to that, just stay with me here) or other depressive activities. At least with Punk (real punk) or Heavy Metal the aggression gets turned toward something other than the "victim". 5. Because of their tendency to complain, the matter of the males wearing skin tight jeans over their under developed little teen legs is going to be impossible to overlook.
If someone were to doll themselves up in a tutu, toting around one of those giant lolipops, and wearing Goldilocks hair, and if that same person were to tug your sleeve and say "You just don't know how hard it is to be me"...well you'd practically scream "WELL NO S---! I am practically obligated to give you crap while you're wearing girl's clothing so tight that your testosterone is being cut off and, as a result, the hormonal imbalance throws you into some kind of teen man-menses!"
You see, while gender roles ARE completely arbitrary (I really am not saying any of this out of a sexist kick), it is simply crossing the line to impersonate a woman on her period if you are a 14 year old male.
6. They pussed up alternative rock just a little more.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/14/2008 9:36:47 AM | | Just reading through saw your post and wondered just what you do listen to? I listen to almost everything from country to death metal some I like some not so much. Oh yeah not all EMO is whiny. That was not directed at you but I hate typing on my phone. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/27/2008 5:37:37 AM | Songwriters & singers have been complaining how terrible their lives have been for years through song. Some are better at it then others. They just added a label to it.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/27/2008 9:51:23 AM | I think people hate most "trends" - just because they need something to harp on or they won't feel good about themselves. But, with emo, as with all things, there are the people who genuinely love the music, and the trends, and the mindset, and then those who just follow what their friends are doing, or want to be different and don't know any other way than being "emo". Sadly though, the latter becomes more so the case with time, and that's when the people who dislike it really come out, because they see it more frequently. I don't know, people should just live and let live. However, it probably wouldn't kill a guy to not wear more eyeliner than his girlfriend.
Also, like I saw other poeple saying, just the definition of emo has really changed from what it used to be, back when Sunny Day Real Estate, ect. were around. Now I see people say, OMMMGG, I LUVZ MCCRR - GERARD IS SO HAWT, EMO FOR LYFE!!!!! Yeah... just, no.

I think is a good idea to write and be in touch with your feelings. Anything but HIPHOP.............Please!!!!!!!!!

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 1/17/2009 11:24:58 AM | | because people don't tend to feel sorry for people who feel sorry for themselves all the time. Everyone knows what Emo is it means emotional, it's nothing more than a scene created by our nations youth and it will pass. | |

Listening to EMO and consuming alchohol induces suicidal tendencies...

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 1/17/2009 5:37:42 PM | | Why assume that people don't like emo because they don't understand it? I understand it perfectly, its teenage self pity. The 'you don't understand' thing is a perfect example. The sad thing is that it's not different at all, it looks just like goth or metal, the music is generic too. I only hope the next generation of teenagers will do something new. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 1/17/2009 11:00:01 PM | | I think some people just take it way too far. Hell, I'll admit it...I am generally what you would call emo but I've seen some people and it's just like...damn, that's just retarded. Some of the emo people I know don't even have a reason to be emo, they just do it because it's the trend. Also, emo music isn't just bands like My Chemical Romances and Fall Out Boy...there are "emo" bands out there that are actually pretty good (A Static Lullaby, Senses Fail, Underoath). We also just don't listen to "I'm gonna cut my wrists" bands. Sanguis said a few posts up that an emo wouldn't stand a chance if they we're at a real metal show. Like I said, I'm emo...but I've still seen (and survived) from going to shows such as Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus and Kataklysm. | |
