Course theres a whole argument over where NIN fits in now... are they rock? prog rock? ... electronical rock power ballads? .. its not as clear cut as it was back with skinny puppy etc.

Posted: 5/22/2007 3:26:13 PM | Just a bunch of kids out having fun applying eye liner to each other come on Ender hopefully they will grow out of it and look back on it when they reach their late 30's and go WTF! was I thinking when they go through their photo album with their friends besides I thought Emo was a "fashion statement" either way I wouldn't let an Emo lover walk My dog don't even get me going on Marilyn Manson at least NIN has some talent. I wouldn't say I hate it I don't hate much of anything except people who make a left not using their signal light I would find Emo more "annoying" than anything as far as fashion entire every one has the right to express them selves as they wish some times my socks don't match. | |

Emo's get alot of negative press but wrist cutting has nothing at all to do with Emo and people who show off there wrist scars (are there seriously people out there who do that?) are not real Emos.
After reading that post, I feel like I know more about what it means to be emo than you. Every time you said "But these people don't represent the emo community" (paraphrasing), or "They're not real emos" just shows that the reality does not meet with what you believe the word to represent.
I don't know about Salem, but up here, the emo "scene" is HUGE. And many characteristics you shrugged off as being unrepresentative or not emo, infact are greatly seen here.
Props for trying to defend emo, but you can't define the collective to be what you want it to be.
Anyway, I'm a strong proponent for just dropping labels. Punks, goths, skins, mods, gangsters, emo, rockers, ginos, I'd rather just be me.

Here's my perspective into the emo thing.
I don't mind the look all that much. It's like goth lite. No leather, just more clothing black. The chick emo hair kinda bugs me but that's more cause I don't understand the point of having your bangs cover your face. Muslims created veils to do that and they can still see out of them, Emo ladies should try that.
The music, well sucks. I like rock (especially indie/underground/unsigned) but this crap is so depressing it makes hot waxing my testicles seem like fun. The lyrics are borderline suicidal (if not suicidal) and all the music is is a bunch of people ****ing and moaning about their lives. This reflects on the emo attitude (or stereotype of). Life is what you make of it. If you look at everything in a depressing perspective, life WILL become depressing. If you go out there and live your life to the fullest everyday and try to make the most of your time on this ****in planet, you wouldn't be that depressed. Everyone feels bad and shit happens to everyone, suck it up and move on. It's life, deal with it.
Personally, I hate being around depressing people. They bore me. However, I've met plenty of people that sport the emo look that are nice and happy people. If they sport the stereotypical emo attitude, sorry to say, you're a f*cktard. | |

I don't think so... why is it wrist cutters are allways shuned as "posers" who are just going through a phase or looking for attention? I know many, many REAL Emo's and they never once cut there wrist, and they are educated enough to know Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance arent really Emo, and recognize wrist cutting as a poser caste-mark.

But if you show behaviors and beliefs that are representative of said label you are in effect that label to an extent. For example I'm a punk to a great extent, as I've not only been to some shows that are punk my actions and style to an extent are congruent with what it means to be a punk.
And to quote an unremembered source "only posers care about posers"
Anti-Flag has a "Captain Anarchy" song about posers and how it makes the community look bad, your not calling Justin Sane a poser are you? | |

I never said anything about being Emo, I said I maintained my normal hair but maintain my punk spirit. I know nothing about the Punk movement? I saw Get Up Kids back in 99 and Taking Back Sunday last month. And might see the Academy Is on the 31st this month. I have alot of CD's put out by Anti-Flag as well. I know the ideology pretty well. Before Emo was sucked up by the major labels it was an underground movement where Rites of Spring and Moss Icon like bands would play, they were "emotive hardcore", then other bands where influenced by them but had a more Indy sound, Sunny Day Real Estate paved the way for Get Up Kids and Promised Ring. Just look up some of those bands if you get the chance. And please, don't let MTV or major record label bands be your source of Emocation. There are better sources for the information. | |

If you take bands like alexisonfire for instance alot of guitar stuff is pretty technical so yeah some of these musicians are pretty talented. If people wana call emo an attitude then radiohead must be emo to **** lol. Emo to me is just another word for post-hardcore. I've got a varied taste in music though, Im open to anything really. | |

Your in good company as even Guy Piccioto of Rites of Spring and Fugazi didnt even know what one is... and he INVENTED EMO!!! Emo is Emotive punk, the word "Emo" itself has many definitions, with regard to music it's either emotive, melodic punk or anything that derrived from it (like the Indie Emo scene of Promised Ring and Onelinedrawing). It doesnt just mean "Emotional" (unless with regard to an emotional person or current state of being) | |

I mean, I like JimmyEatWorld who apparently are emo (I just thought they were a rock band) but think that the likes of Fall Out Boy are just whiny pop punk. All music is "emotive", so aside from some goth-derived fashion & a catch-all label it doesn't seem to describe anything in particular. Grunge was another pointless label, incidentally - Mudhoney, The Afghan Whigs & Pearl Jam are not the same type of rock but the press just love to categorise & label things then a fashion for the invented label can be mass marketed at those dumb enough to fall for manufactured individuality.
Oh, & I agree with whoever on here said that Skinny Puppy just plain rock.  | |

me personally, i hate the new country acts, not because its new, but because ts ripping off the heavy metal ballads of the 80's.
