it was around in the 80s, just didnt have the 'label'---who could forget The Smiths/Morrissey???!!!
or like someone else mentioned, The Cure...
nothing new, just re-invented is all.

Have you ever herd the expression the dumbing down of America, well emo is the dumbing down of rock music specifically vocals. It is ridicules for anybody to try to claim it has any merit what so ever.

Becuase seeing a bunch of whiny femminen boys in too tight jeans talking about suicide, all having dyed black hair annoys me to the very core.
Emo is possibly the worst fad to come out ever. I wish we were back in the 80s, quite frankly
It's this "talking about suicide" shit is why people hate the scene!! WTF They ****en have to ruin it for everyone! Emo existed back in the 80's as well. Ever hear of Still Life, Rites of Spring, and Moss Icon? There was an Emotive Hardcore DC Punk scene going on which Emo sprang forth from. Get an Emocation before trashing the genre. Arrrg. And about the "dyed black hair" that's to look LESS Emo as black hair is supposed to make you look tougher.
emos in ireland are just argh!!! they walk around all depressed, and then they scratch at their arms and deliberately wear short sleeves for the next few days for attention.
'o the whole worlds against me'
'my parents hate me'
'i wish i was dead'
so jus do it like
Maybe they feel like the world IS against them because there parents DO hate them. Of course they'll feel like the worlds against them people go against those who are different then themselves and those people who feel like outcast have to unite. But these "I cut my wrist" posers ruin the ****en scene for everyone else and is the reason for "Emo beatdown days" But honestly REAL Emo's are ultra-nice people from what I know and Emo's, Indies, and Punks have an allience as we all have a common enemy in the republican agenda.

What you know is from pop stations and MTV, if you've heard REAL Emo bands like Get Up Kids or Promise Ring or Sunny Day Real Estate (the Indie Emo scene) then you'd think. and it's not "rock" you make it sound like there the rolling stones, or the Hives, or The White Stripes, all of which suck. Emo is derrived from Punk.
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 6/7/2007 10:33:39 AM | | The fact that you just said the Rolling Stones suck totally destroys any credibility you might have had left in your "tortured emo soul" | |

and it's not "rock" you make it sound like there the rolling stones, or the Hives, or The White Stripes, all of which suck. Emo is derrived from Punk ...or punk rock to give it its full name. For ****s sake lad stop being so bloody precious about it! Emo's a form of rock music, a subgenre of a subgenre. You've berated other people for not knowing enough about your favourite type of music (& I think you'll find most people haven't heard of the early emo bands you mention) yet seem to have very little knowledge of music in general. Try broadening your horizons a tad - you never know, if you do the fact that some people don't like emo won't matter so much to you. I've got broad tastes in music & quite frankly not only could I not give a toss whether or not other people like it I don't expect them to like anything more than a small percentage of it.
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 6/7/2007 1:52:46 PM | Allright, "suck" would be a shitty way of putting it as they obviously know how to play there instuments and know what there singing about... a better term I guess would be that they're music just does'nt "vibe" with me. The Hives and White Stripes however suck maybe Emo should take a hint from them and have a roots movement where it goes back to playing first wave Emo stuff. And I don't have a "tortured Emo soul" as no one can be Emo because it was originally a term invented to be derrogatory to other punks just for being introspective and sensitive. So all (real) Emo's are actually punks except that they dress normally and have normal hair like the guy's from Taking Back Sunday (but still dress with obvious consistancies with eachother, but the uniform doesnt make the punk and many "punks" don't dress the part it's there choice but there still apart of the scene) You want to see "Emo's" be less depressed? Stop refering them to "Emo's" and start refering to them as "Punk's" | |

But they are broad, but etiquitte suggest call something by it's subgenre, I dunno not my rule. It's not that people don't like Emo it's that they listen to something on the radio and think that's what the scenes about and radio music and DJ's and magazines attach the name of a particular scene (which the band isnt a member of, for example on an add for the Honda Civic Tour they say "Two hybrids meet, the Pop-Punk/Emo Fall Out Boy are playing to promote this vehicle!") Makes me wan't to puke, they are NOT Pop-Punk OR Emo! And the fact that there going on tour for a major corperation that's contributed to so much pollution and treating the working class like shit just say's that they are a big time poser band, and it's labeling like that pisses me off so the general public never get's to hear real Emo and thinks that the scene they read in magazines and watch on MTV is what it's about and it's not it's been around for along time there are still awsome Indie, Pop-Punk, and Indie Pop-Punk bands out there that havent sold out and represent what the scenes about much better then the radio can ever do.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 6/7/2007 2:36:07 PM | Playing to promote a Honda Civic? What next: in-house band for the corporate Xmas party? The trouble with media misrepresentation of subcultures is that your average bloke on the street only ever gets to hear about it through that very misrepresentation. After all, if it can be co-opted it can be marketed & then someone gets to make money out of it before it's consigned to the dustbin of popular culture. It made my blood boil when the media printed articles on "grunge fashion" when I was young enough to not be so cynical about it so I get where you're coming from. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 6/7/2007 2:58:18 PM | | I honestly love grunge (Real grunge not the fake Creed Shit) Nirvana was such an awsome band (and believe it or not early Nirvana is more Emo then My Chemical Romance is (they aint Emo but still a great band, in spite of being a major label, well I'm a gothic pop-punk what can I say?) ever here there song Spank Thru by Nirvana? That song is wicked Emo! Complete with the melodic screaming and yearning for an ex (IE: "I need you back oh baby baby! I just can't see why, we lost it from the start! Living without you girl will only break my heeeeeeeeaaaaarrrrrrttt! I can feel it, I can hold it!") Can you believe that was Nirvana? There ****en awsome! Yeah Fall Out Boy sucks they're wicked sell out's and have no right to call themselves Punk or Emo. If they wan't to be labeled alternative that's one thing put them with Live and the Counting Crows, NOT the same catagory as the Parasites, Weston, the Buzzcocks, or Fugazi, Rain, and The Get Up Kids. | |

Baby, do you understand me now Sometimes I feel a little mad Well don't you know that no-one alive Can always be an angel When things go wrong I seem to be bad
I'm just a soul who's intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
Baby, sometimes I'm so carefree With a joy that's hard to hide And sometimes it seems that All I have to do is worry And then you're bound to see my other side
I'm just a soul who's intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
If I seem edgy, I want you to know That I never mean to take it out on you Life has it's problems and I get my share And that's one thing I never mean to do
'cause I love you Oh, oh, oh, baby, don't you know I'm human Have thoughts like any other one Sometimes I find myself alone and regretting Some foolish thing, some little simple thing I've done
I'm just a soul who's intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
Yes, I'm just a soul who's intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 6/10/2007 2:29:57 AM | Don't hate it (whatever this "it" is) but like many, I just dismiss Emo as another recycled fad. In the 80's today's emo was yesterday's just plain old Punk. Maybe not as adventureous as some of these kids are today but nevertheless, back then it was Punk. Emo=/= punk IMO. Like bell bottoms (though I love 'em!), butterfly collars & plaid, this too shall pass into history, be forgotten for a while before returning in 15-20 yrs. | |

and anytime anyone uses a derogatory term to describe gay/bi-sexual people you better bet your boots i'm gonna speak out about it
Amen to that! People have a right to be with who they want to be with and no one should interefere with that.

Before it was sucked up by the mainstream media Emo was largely an underground movement. And your correct about it as it having been derrived from punk. Emocore actually started in the 80's then Sunny Day Real Estate applied Emocore riffs and vocals to Indie, spawning the Dashboard Confessional and Get Up Kids breed of "Emo" but the original "Emocore" elemants (minus the hardcore punk elemant of the first wave, but still punk nontheless) can still be seen in punk bands like Matchbook Romance. "Emo" is only a trend for the posers. The scene will allways be alive and is only a "fad" with regard to it's mainstream acceptance. The underground Emo and Indie/Emo will (hopefully) be alive forever as the message behind it is important for today's society.
And what you point out is why "Emo's" refer to themselves as "Punks" Emo does = punk, just has a different fashion and sound.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 6/13/2007 10:25:02 PM | Okay, at least you listed some actual emo bands. The reason you think people hate emo..is because all the bands today that people consider emo, arnt, they are just pop-punk bands that sing about girls, there are some good ones out there, but not many.
Sunny day real estate is awesome by the way.
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 6/13/2007 10:27:53 PM | Another double post. REAL emo, is almost dead, it started out back in the day, it branched off hardcore punk music, instead of singing about the goverment and stuff, they decided to sing about other things.
I also, hate the word emo, the only reason i call some bands emo like sunny day, is because that was the actual genre they were in.
If you dont feel an emotional connection to the music you are listening to, AT ALL. Then why are you listening to it?

but didnt we all hate our parent's music/the older generation at one time? i surely was guilty of it and did...
give the guy a break, there was a time in my life that i slammed such artists as elvis and b.b. king (sacrilegious, i know---lol) but i eventually grew out of it, and learned to appreciate more and broaden my horizons

Pop-punk is another genre being smeared by MTV Gives REAL pop-punk (Weston, Doc Hopper, the Parasites, Better Luck Next Time, Ice Nine Kills) a bad image, I still don't understand why the two genres are confused with eachother. And Emo LOOK'S like it died 10 years ago, however the real scene is still alive if you look in the right spots. The scenes definately been tainted by MTV and it sucks.

What's the difference between emo and goth? I still can't figure that out
Basically, Emo's a scene and a music genre that branched off of hardcore punk, alot of people seem to forget that, the gothicness as alot of "Emo's" happened to be pagan and follow Gothic beliefs. I consider myself a Goth to a great extent, I have the right literature (Nocturnal Witchcraft and Gothic Grimoire) and fashion for it, but as a punk I include elemants of that style as well. The two are "very" different yet one can be both.
