| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/20/2007 1:50:39 PM | | It doesn't have to do with the music just the people. Its become what goth once was, a bunch of kids who think they are cool because of the way they dress and act and the music they listen to. The people tend to be very abrasive and just wear on you. The also tend to be very close minded about other musical genres and consistently try to tell you how awesome emo music is regardless as to whether or not you are listening. This is at least my experience. That being said I am friends with some emo kids, cause as always generalizations don't hold true. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/20/2007 3:27:01 PM | Emo isn't the way you dress, it isnt the way you act, it is a music from the soul, it MAKES you feel things for a reason, thoes of you who say that music isnt supposed to make you FEEL anything needs their head checked because they have been dropped one too many times. Often people hate things they cant understand, or they do and they hate it anyways. We are vengeful people by nature. And it is not just Emo music that makes you feel anything, Country makes you feel things, so does Rock. I have always been comforted by the Emo Rock scene. It isnt telling a kid that its alright to cut or commit suicide it is telling a kid that they arent the only ones going through what they are going through themselves. Like any Genre, it is a something that you can relate too, know that it will be okay (otherwise the singer wouldnt be singing about it) and life will move on.
If you decide to dye your hair purple and black or any other funkdified color you can think of, wear black makeup and get peircings (Like I did and im 23) then automatically you are going to suspect me and everyone I know of being manic depressive, pill popping, razor cutting freaks because you cant understand the deepth of something like a genre of music? I may not LIKE Rap or most hip hop but I understand its value for others how it makes them feel as people.
Emo, Goths, Punks, and all the other so called "freaks" are the best people in the world once you get to know them, they would do anything to help out a friend and they are usually the ones driving up on their last fumes of gas across town to pull out every cd and mp3 they have to comfort a friend after anything bad that has happened. They are great people and I am glad to be a part of them.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/20/2007 3:35:07 PM | ^^^^ yeah right. Some people listen to music, and dislike it. You can't just say that people don't understand something and that is why they hate it.
"Oh you hate brocolli? You just don't understand it!" "Oh you hate the rain? You just don't understand it!" "Oh you hate the getting the flu? You just don't understand it!"
Give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/20/2007 7:40:32 PM | | As a musician I have to say that on a purely musical level there's not much there. As far as the lyrical content,I have a teenage niece who listens to it constantly........she cuts herself. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/21/2007 1:32:10 AM | Personally, I know people say bands like My Chemical Romance and Fallout Boy aren't real "emo", but bands like those and the scene kids are what's being hated on by most "emo" haters.
I don't really mind the androgynous look. Motley Crue, Marilyn Manson, and Queen did it and rocked, but they also had good music. I grew up with ACDC and Metallica and stuff like that. This "emo" trend is annoying because the actual music is pure crappy pop-rock. I don't care what you call it. I just don't like a lot of the pop rock on radio today: MCR, Hawethorne Heights, Panic! At the Disco, Green Day, Good Charlotte, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, Fallout Boy, Three Days Grace, 3 Doors Down, Default, Blink 182....all suck.
The "emo" or "scene kid" trend kind of takes the looks and style from punk and goth cultures somewhat and replaces the music with shitty pop. If you like it, fine, but I feel personally, that many of these bands are for kids who want to be "punk" but can't tolerate heavier music than Britney Spears.
Believe me. I'm no musical elitist. I mean I know some groups I like people say suck, but rock is meant to...i dont know...freaking rock.
I dont care what people like. I just hate how pop-rock with annoying vocals is such a damn trend.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/21/2007 2:41:44 PM | | Hm, if people want to slit their wrists, cry about being mistreated and stuff, while living in a hotel suite of a room, liten to slow depressing music, pretend to have such a very hard life, and alot of other stuff. Let them, it's their life, if people want to make fun of people who do so, let them, it's their life, too. Seriously. | |

as for the "real musician" quip....whatever man....i've played guitar for nearly 30 years now, also play drums, keys, bass, and sing... that's a lame-ass card to play. like YOU wouldn't want to cater your tunes to be heard by the masses. give me a break. or you'd rather sit in your basement and play to an audience of one solely to justify your musical righteousness? i do not think so.
you are confusing the musical style with the fashion....
Yes, I am not a real musician even though I play in bands and write my own songs. Sure I may not be famous but I sure as hell would not be some sell out douche who tries to be mainstream by being like everyone else. Ever heard of Dave Matthews Band, Audioslave, Muse, Foo Fighters or Red Hot Chili Peppers to name a few, ya know, mainstream bands who happen to be good and have millions of fans.
And no, because they happen to go hand in hand when it comes to what is popular. Rap music is popular and all the stupid teenagers want to dress like they are 50 Cent or some pompous moron like that even though they have no idea what real rap is all about, they just conform to society. During the 80's and early 90's rap meant something, now it is recycled garbage which lost its meaning like most music does when it becomes mainstream, it conforms to the simple minded. Most old school rap people could never appreciate, same with underground rap these days, I like to call those people who listen to mainstream music 'casual music fans'. Fashion and pop music are like bread and butter, people dress like what is popular, it has been like that for many many years, during the 80's it was hair metal, mullets, leather clothes and whatnot, during the 60's and 70's everyone wore all sorts of weird clothes dictated by what famous musicians wore as well as the time period in general. The way people dressed in the 50's in music was more preppy like, just look at The Beatles and early pictures of many future rock greats like Pink Floyd, that was the thing for teenagers then.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 9/30/2007 12:54:45 AM | yes I can, you are comparing acts of nature, life, and food to music..... forgive my young ignorance but I don't get where a vegetable as great as brocolli came into the picture or rain... I was speaking solely on the fact that Emo music is supposed to make you feel things like any other genre of music and that is where the misunderstanding is.
People think that Emo music TEACHES children to cut their wrists... I can just here mr. and mrs. average american sitting there in therapy saying "I just don't know where little suzie and little johnny learned to cut themselves." I can tell you where they learned... from peers.. and I am not talking about their friends.. I am talking about people who are their age, if their parents aren't the ones teaching them by example then their peers are. There is also the wonderful world of the web... any savvy seven year old can type up something on cutting innocently and end up with thousands of pictures of slit wrists and throats.
What it comes down to is the kids and teens that are emo that are trying to kill themselves need help, it is not the music itself that makes someone want to cut their wrists... (actually rap makes me want to put a hole in my head but that is besides the point) But the fact that they are depressed as a person and need help, it is a parents job to pay attention to their children.
SO INSTEAD OF BLAMING THE MUSIC BLAME THE PARENTS WHO DON'T PAY ANY FREEEKING ATTENTION TO THEIR SPAWN!!!!!!

i have no idea where you are going with this... firstly, it wasn't your comment i was replying to. secondly, yes, of course i've heard of all the bands you mentioned... what are you trying to say about them? that they're "sell-outs", that they're mainstream, or became mainstream...i have no idea based on your reply.
but really, based on your last 2 picks, these are bands that have definitely tamed down their sound compared to their beginnings. so... did they sell-out? who knows... i thought we were talking about emo here in the first place.
And no, because they happen to go hand in hand when it comes to what is popular. Rap music is popular and all the stupid teenagers want to dress like they are 50 Cent or some pompous moron like that even though they have no idea what real rap is all about, they just conform to society. so again...what are you trying to say? fashion following trends in popular music is a naturally occuring thing? if so the whole argument against "emo" is pretty moot, wouldn't you say?
or is it that some people automatically want to have an issue with whatever is deemed "popular" by the media at any given time. did you feel the same way about "grunge" when everyone started to wear doc martens and flannel? again, that was a product of marketing teams and record labels... they tend to create monsters when they attempt to milk a cashcow dry... that's just what happens...
now....because all sorts of young lads decided to get moptop haircuts and wear nehru jackets and such, does that make the Beatle's music any less relevant or important? because guys grew their hair long and wore tight bellbottoms and went around barechested, do we now take pot shots at Led Zeppelin? No. in that instance i think you separate the music itself from the pop culture repercussions, do you not?
just because the media initiates these strange surges and tries to categorize and pigeonhole music for ease of consumption by the masses, that doesn't necessarily devalue the content. it's still up to the individual to be a wise consumer. it's not the music's fault people ultimately decide to dress and perhaps act a certain way... that is all marketing, and in some cases the music fan's way of expressing their love of a certain artist or genre (especially if they aren't musically inclined, not all of us are)... so... is it the media and the merchandisers that are the problem then?
the music itself is being scapegoated here, at least that is the way i see it, and i think that's an ignorant approach to it. every genre of music has its wheat and its chaff... the media tends to want to jam all of it down our throats in one fell swoop, along with the merch, the buttons and posters, and the accompanying fashion ensemble.
if you can separate the music from the fashion...there's not the same arguement...just differing levels of music quality. this occurs in every single genre of music known to humankind.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 10/1/2007 9:01:01 PM | How many emo kids does it take to change a burned out light bulb? No one knows they just cry and write songs about it.
All joking aside. If you like your style and music, as much as everyone else dislikes it, who cares. I blast country and some times irish music (jigs, reels, bagpipes, tin whistles, mandolins) and other weird stuff. I get tons of stupid looks, but I love it and anyone who would dislike me because I like stuff they don't like can eat me. I personally don't like emo, or the look that comes with it (I don't understand what they'll do when they have to turn professional) but I respect that thats what they want to do.
What happened to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and all things after it. Ignore it if you don't like it. Don't censor it.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 10/3/2007 1:17:57 PM | emo isnt so bad, its just this preachy "you guys feel nothing - only we do" attitude that people who are "emo" constantly imply.
if I didnt feel something from the music I like, I wouldnt ever have botherd with it in the first place.
just cause you sing about being deep, and having a frozen heart, and things that are black and doesnt mean your any good to listen to.
I need music that makes me feel something. from the moment tori amos hits that high in "precious things", to the crazy guitars of metallicas "ride the lightning". I have a million songs that make me feel something, anything from regret to wanting to snowboard down a mountain at mach 10. even AFI's own "Love Like Winter", or "Miss Murder" are great songs.
its not the music people tend to hate, its the annoying fact that people who tend to think they are emo, always seem to want to imply no one in the world feels anything besides them.
to which the rest of the world just naturally rebels and wants to flip a big middle finger to the whole thing.
most of us, dont need some image, or form of music, to feel something.

Some people think that mainstream emo is punk music when that is totally wrong. I laughed for about a week when Avril Lavigne called herself a punk rocker, and I laugh when the media call her one. Poor Johnny Ramone must roll in his grave every time someone calls people like Avril punk artists. There are very few actual punk bands in the mainstream, Sum 41, Blink 182 and Green Day are closer to actual punk then they are emo despite having some songs that are kinda emoish. Bands like MCR and Simple Plan are far more emo with their music though, I would say Evanescense is also pretty emo.
