Someone should teach all those emo kids that hate their life that it's down the road, not across the street. If making yourself bleed is the only way to get attention than maybe you should go back and put on some bright clothes instead of all black. It's truly the attitude that people hate, not the people, or the music. | |

Some songs whine and b**** about the most mundane of things while a lot seem to whine and b**** about problems they don't even have. This for me causes me to disconnect from the genre and see it as immature. But then again I'm 10 years older then the target audience. | |

I don't hate it.. I just find it boring. Ya ever see Animal House? The beatnik on the stairs who's guitar Beleushi smashes .... yeah.. thats how I feel about emo. I don't know why.
Ever see Bedazzled?? The part with the dolphin song and the crying at the sunset??? yeah... thats it. I can't help but laugh and wanna kick sand. ;p
it reminds me of sayings like "would you like me to call you a Whhhaaaamublance?" or "Would you like come cheese with that whine?"
yeah... I don't know. Lord knows I've tried to accept it but Its just not me.

Don't have much time for whining, is it about whining? I just don't really know. I don't think I've ever met an Emo.. are those the skinny kids who sort of look punk and have long bangs, and are mopey?

They talk and dress really weird, plus they have that ridiculous hair style lol. I remember when I was in a band two years ago, the opening band was an emo punk band, during sound check the drummer was alaways following me around like I wanna be his friend or something, we had afew words but after I tried to get away from him cause he would talk pure garbage. Emo in the late 90s was something you said to refer to kids that would rather be part of a sing-a-long to Embrace, than Youth of Today. They listened to bands fronted by boys who screamed in anguish over broken hearts, rather than rage over lost pissing wars. People weren't cutters, or dressed in black from head to toe. In 1995 it was all about the white belts, high waters, spock haircuts and having a girl play bass in your band.
Somehow, someone, somewhere decided they would try to make a killing off of those times. Sell it to teens and young adults as some sort of "unique" identity that would set them feel special, and "deep". Everything that hipsters are now, is what emo kids looked like ten years ago - completely unoriginal, and emo now is about some sad 15 year old mallrat hanging out at Hot Topic, wearing red and black striped arm-warmers and sitting in the foodcourt, listening to whatever the corporate "independent" music radio station in his town tells him he should.
Everything in this world just gets regurgitated, shoveled up, and fed again to the next generation that comes along and can't find a statement of their own to make. | |

Emo now is sorta what "goth" was when I was younger (mid 80s!). I'm not bothered by it, but I am also not involved in it at all. I know what it's like to be REALLY into your music and have a bunch of hormones and angst. It's all a part of climbing the ladder and finding the subcultures that interest you. | |

But I think my biggest beef with the "emo" music genre is it seems that it is based on Image first - Music quality second.

Posted: 3/30/2008 1:09:18 PM | I don't hate it but I do think its boring. Emo is just goth mixed with a bit of punk to make it 'different'. It's what educated teenagers who desperately want to show how different they are do now. Its just sad that they no longer have the ability to actually think of anything different. Wear lots of black? Eye liner? Dyed hair? Wow, nobody ever did that before.
Teen culture has changed many times over the last half century, usually its a reaction to what went before. We've had punk, hippies, metalheads, ibiza dance scene, ska, new romatics and goths. Emo seems to have failed to launch, its just a bit limp. At least hoodies and chavs have an actual reason for being what they are. | |

Being emotional has nothing to do with wanting to cut yourself, kill yourself, etc.

The growing trend/stereotype of "emo" today, is actually the stereotype that was used for "goth's" back in the 80's straight through to the late 90's.
It's a completely ridiculous stereotype.
Someone who gets off on cutting themselves, or does it for a release, is a masochist.
Someone who is suicidal, is suicidal,
Someone who is depressed, is depressed.
The growing stereotype of "emo," is just as preposterous now as it was when it was applied to "goths" in the 80's through late 90's.
The growing trend/stereotype of "emo" is someones sad attempt at trying to create another genre/sub culture that will appeal to a younger crowd, by using an old stereotype that we all know appealed to many of them already.
ALL music is emotional on some level.
So, that must mean that all genre's of music should be considered "emo". | |

Yes, technically it does mean "Emotional". But a more accurate definition could be "Overly Emotional". Yes, as a human being, I am emotional. But not half as emotional as Emo kids.

Emo people also date rape. I was once drugged by three Emo men and the next morning I awoke naked in the middle of a park listening to a White Stripes cover band.
Emo People are the cause for global warming.
Guys in Emo bands were to afraid to go near the kids that listened to Marilyn Manson or 70's Revolutionary Punk in high school...they were even scared of thier school's only Moby fan.
Also, Emo people sleep upside down in order to get in touch with the extraterestrial spirit that lies dormant within thier body...oh wait, thats Scientologist. | |

And how come all of a sudden girls started liking these overly emotional 120 pounds make up wearing freaks? These are the same kids that got their ass kicked when I was in high school. Why do chicks like them now? Why are chicks so attracted to piercings and tattoos all of a sudden? A tattoo is just ink covering a skin and a piercing is just a hole in skin. Why would this make you more or less attracted to someone is beyond me.

I may be wrong, but I think there were tattoo loving "chicks" out there long before Emo came around.
But to answer your question as to why a girl would be so attracted to piercing and tattoos which are obviously only physical attributes and have little to do with who the person really is, I could simply point out that some girls like buff guys who wear hats backward. Of course this is also only external and has little to do with someone's inner self, but then again, I feel that you may be able to grasp this concept.

1. They have steadily taken over the rock clubs over the last few years
2. All you hear on Kerrang and Scuzz is emo.
3. Middle class guys well in to their thirties are singing about how a girl dumped them in a disco and how hard their life is.
4. They are sort of punks that look like a clean Sid vicious, however, they seem to represent the exact opposite.
5. Goth's and rockers hate them because they get called emo. I have been called an emo on numerous occasions.
I know these seem to be generalizations, however, that is the viewpoint that most of my friends have. | |
