| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/10/2008 6:52:02 PM | Here is the thing that gets me. What ever happened to just being yourself? Why do you have to be a Emo, or a Elmo or a slowmo? A pink , a pecker or a punk? No matter what you call yourself you will never get away from who you really are. We are all different in ourselves. We don't have to have red ,blue, yellow, or green hair to be different. We are different period. If what i have read here is true then Emo's are cry baby's that crave attention and will cut themselves to get it. That is what we always called cry baby's that whined all the time because they were dissatisfied or couldn't get there way. They use to take a lot of a$$ whippings. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/13/2008 10:30:31 PM | | It's just a part of getting old. You start to hate whatever the younger generation is into. You'll see. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/16/2008 8:15:47 PM | | I gotta say... I love most of the emo hairstyles on the gurls.......whew...wish I was a young man again. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/17/2008 2:38:17 AM | | You can be nice and sensitive without acting like a woman or wearing extremely tight clothing (as a guy). Most people confuse Emo and Scene, Emo being the kids that are truly depressed and lonely and Scene being the people that dress like Emo people to fit in. | |
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/18/2008 7:49:37 AM | Many Emo people tend to be very very nice sensitive people.
There's your answer.
Sensitive = weak. Weak = annoying.
I can say this as somebody who was formerly both.
The world frowns on people who whine about their problems rather than fixing them. Emo takes the concept of catharsis to the point of self parody.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/19/2008 7:50:16 AM | simply man.. emo's are to f***king depressing.. they dresses weird.. like they suppose to set a fashion statement.. i see it as.. freaking retards crying for attention.. and what do you know.. the fact that im talking about them.. they already win. arrrrr | |
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/20/2008 12:45:41 AM | | and here I thought Emo was a character on Sesame Street...... Oh wait... that is Elmo.. not emo.... | |
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/21/2008 8:38:12 AM | I had a roomate who was completely emo like a couple years ago.
What I found annoying was how he made his problems seem like the only problems that existed and it was your duty to help him n feed him attention. Yet turned down any offers of advice or help.
All he wanted was what the person he talked to had.
"I wish I had a girlfriend. I wish I had cerebral cancer" he always tried to bring ya down, it really sucked.

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/21/2008 9:29:36 AM | This is probably mentioned before but I can't be chewed trawling through 9 pages of replies.
The term Emo is used literally to describe either the music or fan of what is now known as Emo (OK, sounds a bit obvious now but stick with me). Bands classed as Emo now - such as Fall Out Boy, MCR and crap like that - are NOT Emo when the original term was coined. Dashboard Confessional aren't in my eyes an Emo band.
Emo-core (the original "genre" of Emo) were hardcore bands like Rites of Spring, Embrace (not the Huddersfield shoegazers), Far, Texas Is The Reason, Handsome. Someone was seen crying at a ROS gig because even though musically they were aggressive, sometimes lyrically they weren't and were the opposite.
So my take on emo as it stands now is awful. It's awful punk in goth's clothing. Emo back in the day will always mean something to me.
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/24/2008 4:21:17 PM | | Because the kids who listen when not depressed and actually happy think that they're a portable jesus | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/26/2008 8:58:40 PM | Because they haven't heard of "Vampire Weekend" yet?
Actually I can understand it; I was a dirty little punk rock kid in the 80s and everyone hated us. But... we secretly enjoyed that hate. When you're young and feeling alienated, people's despisement validates those feelings.
What I don't get is why emo kids are hated more than goth kids. Emo is pretty much "goth-lite" so why wouldn't the goth kids be the ones who got beat up?

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/26/2008 9:31:05 PM | I don't hate them but I did make an observation last night on this very subject....
back in the day, when we called Emo Goth, we didn't get expensive haircuts and buy expensive clothes. That would have been totally against what it was we were doing as Goth/Punks or even Grunge. These movements had a distinct anti-establishment twist to them and consumerism didn't fit into the genre's.
the Emo folks I see are spending a load of dough and are as consumeristic as anybody.
I think the anti-consumer thing came from watching baby boomer parents who brought on the revolutionary times of the 60's become stock brokers made a lot of us sick....
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 4/27/2008 8:54:27 PM | | Emo's aren't anti establishment or anything they are just annoying. All they do is cry about how crappy their life is even though they probably have a great life...they are just looking for attention. | |

| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/4/2008 9:27:34 AM | | when i was in high school emo was related to the hardcore scene, and they didnt wear all that make up and shit. now and days, i dont know what is really considered emo, but the kids i see related to it look nothing like the emo groups i remember from the 80s or 90s. of course, i was never a big fan of emo even back then. i just didnt like the music, wasnt my cup of tea. | |
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/4/2008 1:44:57 PM | I didn't like older emo either. I remember back in the late 90s and early 00's when some people on a message board I used to post on started making a big deal about bands like Far. And I just didn't get it.
Although, I've also heard people credit Fugazi with being the original emo band. Whether or not I agree with that, I do like Fugazi.
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/5/2008 7:52:46 AM | | not sure if fugazi was considered emo, but i do know ian mackaye was in embrace before forming fugazi, and i believe embrace was considered one of the first "emo" bands. or at least that's what the press labeled them as. | |
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/5/2008 6:22:06 PM | I hate emo because I can't stand to hear spoiled brats whining about how terrible their lives are while making ten thousand bucks a night playing three chords. Boo hoo f**ckers.
And the Minor Threat Ian MacKaye would've kicked the Embrace/Fugazi Ian MacKaye's as* back in 1983.
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/31/2008 7:39:33 AM | | ready, i totally agree with you. life sucks, so wear a helmet. go to ethiopia and fight for survival instead of whining on a stage for a career, and then we'll see how emo you'll be. i play guitar myself, so it offends me when someone says that those idiots have good songs, because i wrote an 11 chord song in the course of ten minutes, and if they are famous for their lame lyrics and three chord songs, then in turn they should be my friggin slaves. their very existence offends me. and not only that, most of these wack job are over the age of 30! so we have pussied up middle-aged boys who whine about teen angst and talk about cutting themselves because highschool is so hard to deal with. if they are still in highschool, then there is a big problem here. this may sound mean, but i speak for all those who are trully sick and tired of emo: stop whining about it and actually go kill yourselves because you are breathing my air. if you arent going to kill yourselves, then stop whining about it anyhow! | |
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 5/31/2008 12:56:38 PM | | I generally dislike anyone who plays a victim all the time... which is pretty much the distinguishing feature of emo music | |
|
| Why do so many people hate Emo? Posted: 6/8/2008 1:45:31 AM | | are you kidding me????...fugazi was ian mackay,,associatedwith minor threat...ORIGINAL scene, not this emo shit, i agree fugazi is amazing but there is no way you someone credit them with being the first emo band...Saetia, there is the first "scrEMO" band, not arguing, just cant believe that someone actually said that fugazi was emo haha...CHEERS | |
|
