What kind of profiles do you like?

I think it's good to put your best foot forward, and try and do the best you can, could even learn something. I'm not suggesting to people to be sloppy, and have bad profiles, It's just the judging of those so critically is my main point.

Just isn't all that important to me to be corrected, or correct others... unless asked. But this is a good discussion, like all others, to see what's important, and how we interact with others.

I have to say I draw the line at Text Speak. It's just a pet peeve, but it immediately annoys me. And if she's into NASCAR, Harley's, and/or Pro Wrestling, I'm gone...

I actually enjoy the long profile, especially those written with humor and wit.

Personally I don't like profiles that come across to me as "trying too hard" trying to be funny, or smart, or whatever, but that's okay, to each his own. I do notice the spelling, I can't help it, I mentally correct it, but unless it was really bad it would not be a deal breaker for me. Text speak, or "ghetto speak" is a turn off to me, and frankly I really really can't stand when someone goes crazy with the emoticons. I don't really care how long the profile is, as long as I can get a flavor of who the person is, and I always do read their posting history if they have one for more information. If the profile is all bragging though, I usually will get bored if it's a long one.
I think everyone should read other profiles, see what they like and don't like about them, have a profile review, the people there often have good advice.
OF and Sock, may I say that you are two of the classiest men around, I admire you both greatly and will always be more than happy to share the couch and popcorn with you.

I take a lot of crap for my views, which are exactly this. I would add UFC, as well.

I think it's really important to find someone that has things in common, but I am happy to cooperate.

If someone wants me to go to a sporting event, they can come to the opera or a museum with me. The amount that they whine at the opera, will be directly proportional to the amount I whine at the football game.

I agree and some of the most well-spoken articulate people are the very ones so full of themselves they reek of haughty judgement and are so unkind. It's a major turn off.

I appreciate and admire a person who can present a well reasoned argument and who has mastered the King's English, but it doesn't render you better, kinder, prettier or more handsome. In fact it can often times make you quite ugly indeed.

Barbe… Thank you for the kind words! You made my day. But now I have to live up to them. (And so does Old Folkie, but I’m sure that will be easier for him to do than for me.)

My profile is long and took an hour to write. My intent was to not take what amounts to a virtual window display too seriously, since this cyberspace/website format is an artificial environment and is not amenable to being able to accurately portray myself--certainly not to a reliable degree. (Not that I would want to do that anyway if I expected to get a date.) So I decided to make my “audition” resemble a stand up comedy routine. I have received many unsolicited compliments on it, and I am sure that I have probably made many women think that “this guy is buffoon and is out of the running”. But I did bury some read-between-the-lines nuggets of sincerity and reflection to be observed by those who can do so. It’s not for everyone, but I like my profile just fine.

What I like in a woman’s profile is some light-hearted content and some serious stuff. It’s so easy to spot when she has either put too little effort into effectively showcasing herself, or worse, she simply doesn’t know how to come across reasonably well. Nonetheless, she is either lazy and has no self-pride, or is lesser-skilled. The occasional misspelled word or minor grammatical infraction is okay, but sloppiness reveals something that I find useful to know about her.

The bottom line is whether or not our profile is effective in creating some interest from the opposite sex, and not the apparent therapeutic effect gained by writing long lists of things we do NOT want in our mate. Too many people unwittingly defeat their purpose when they accentuate the negative by issuing restrictions about what not to say or be. Stay off your high horse and keep it positive. (There will be plenty of time to try to change each other once we start dating.)

Of course it's easier for me! I live on damn mountain 300 miles away from anyone else on PoF!. But thank you, Barbe. Have you tried sprinkling some of Emeril's Cajun spice on the popcorn? I'll bring some next time I'm sent to the couch.

I prefer my profiles with nonpareils.

It's a lifestyle choice.

Usually the ones with good grammar, and that don't make me vomit in my mouth.

She forgot to add "and don't have the words "f*ck" and "you" tattooed with festive scroll work in place of their shaved eyebrows and posing in a prison jumpsuit, while proclaiming he was *living* in Chino."

Or does that fit the latter category you mentioned? I would think that is a whole other category... under the "holy hell, what a scary freak" column.

And yes, she once got a message from a member meeting that description. Although that member has long since left the server, his memory lingers on...

I like profiles that are like a box a cracker jacks. They’ve got candy coated popcorn, peanuts and a prize. I especially love digging through to find the prize. My favorite prize is the decoder ring. Then you use the decoder ring to figure out what the heck the point is they are trying to make with their profile.

Then when you figure it out, you feel really smart!

Ones without incongruent letters lIkE THiS. Ones where the persons list isn't super long full of requirements and such. I doubt they could meet most of their own requirements themselves. One's that don't talk about being a tomboy or all the men sports they like since I still really love women who hang on to their genders and aren't so much of benders. Humorous ones are great, but not when they talk about snorting when they laugh or bad habits. Ones that don't sound too cliche or trendy...i.e. "I love sushi".
