| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/29/2007 6:43:24 AM | I've got to defend FYI. In my work place, an FYI at the beginning of a message indicates that the info is for informational purposes ONLY, and that the recipient need not take any kind of action. So, if you are a manager of a bunch of people, and you get 20 emails from your direct reports, you would be well advised to leave the FYI emails for last. Nobody is waiting for your action on those.

This proves my point. "FYI" is such a useless term, they put it on the stuff nobody cares about!

| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/29/2007 9:20:15 PM | "In my work place, an FYI at the beginning of a message indicates that the info is for informational purposes ONLY, and that the recipient need not take any kind of action. "
FYI on a memo is completely different than someone saying, in a conversation, "FYI...." THAT drives be nuts...Of course it's FYI...otherwise you wouldn't be telling me!!!!
Another one I hate, again when used verbally, is ASAP...even worse when they pronounce it, like a word..."A-sap". Again, typing it in a memo is one thing, but if you're talking to me, don't use the acronym. How much time do you really save, as opposed to saying "as soon as possible"?
Another thing that makes me laugh is when I see, in print (newspaper/online, wherever), when a journalist uses "in my opinion" within the text of a column he's written. OF COURSE it's your opinion! YOU WROTE IT!!!!!

You're making us sound like we're a buzzkill.....geez....I'm just picky.
You're not saying these things during sex, are you ?
"Give me that moist, quirky, scrumptious sausage !! I'll bend over and lift up my fannypack so you can be my backdoor hubby and pump my soiled hamper !!!"
Diva:
Um....I don't know. How often do you need to say it ? You might need to have a set limit. Once per week. Less if possible.

| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/30/2007 5:50:28 AM | How _____ is that? (Insert adjective) That's a Joe question. --- (Translation: "ASK JOE." Or whomever.) smack (talking it and/or laying it down) so wrong, on so many levels/in so many ways mandatory (hear this one at work a lot) And from the recent Don Imus/Rutgers ... ahem... "scandal", ... "We're looking forward to putting this behind us." ????????? beeeyach not too shabby Where's the beef? (Just in case that makes a comeback.) | |

| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/30/2007 8:28:04 AM | Yes, James has made many valuable additions.
I have already added many to my list. He's the only person who seems to 'get it'.
Not to take away from anyone else, but he's been right on target with just about everything.
I will point out one that I actually disagree with:
beeeyach
I love calling people '****es' and 'beeeyachs'.
Mostly because I'm so white that it sounds ridiculous when I use rapper phraseology.

| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/30/2007 1:14:03 PM | *That's not fun.* You can't really appreciate the insipid banality of this one until you're on the receiving end of it:
"What happened to you?" "I was machine-gunned. The force knocked me through an eighth-floor window, and I fell right into the path of an 18-wheeler." "That's not fun."
|
| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/30/2007 1:27:19 PM | are you thinking these up on your own?? if not, who writes for you....
I have a writer who thinks them up for me. He writes all my posts. In fact, I didn't write this, he did!
|
| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/30/2007 4:59:32 PM | I don't like when women call themselves a b*tch

| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/30/2007 5:16:04 PM | Dear James' Writer, I have enjoyed your "skills", I mean your wonderful writing style and wanted to let you know that you, along with ajaxs' writer are ALL THAT AND a bag....sorry, I mean, have provided me with some much needed relief..........strictly laughs of course, nothing sordid.
Thanks for the good times. Would you be available for extra work or a little something on the side?

| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/31/2007 6:06:28 AM | You know you're _______ when... Listen to this joke I found on the internet. same old, same old. [how appropriate!] CE and BCE (Common Era and Before Common Era), as a replacement for BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini, "Year of our Lord"). Just another example of politically correct, diluted language to appease people who think they have a right to go through life without being "offended". Nothing to do with being (or not being) religious; I'm not religious and I have no problem with BC and AD. They've worked for nearly 2000 years. Yeah, I know, Crusades, Inquisition. You're not going to make the world a better place by changing a couple of letters. It ain't gonna happen! The so-called "Common Era" calendar is based, erroneously or not, on the figured date of the birth of Christ. So if you're going to be consistent, you'll have to change the number, too. | |
|
| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/31/2007 6:54:03 AM | People love to get 'offended' by anything and everything.
It's a new passive-aggressive phenomenon for unpopular people on corporate environments to leverage Human Resources departments against people that they are jealous of or dislike. I've seen so many good people get into trouble because they have made innocuous jokes or made slightly off-color statements in the presence of these types of people. They eavesdrop on peoples' personal conversations or go out of their way to be offended by the most ridiculous things and then report all of these incidents to their HR departments. Rather than trying to develop personal relationships or trying to make friends, they would rather become a self-appointed freelance spy for themselves (pretending that it's for the company and its best interests) and report anything and anyone around them in the hopes that somehow they will gain popularity or be perceived as a responsible and upstanding. In the end, the people that get in trouble or are actually dismissed in these instances are the superior workers. The tattle-tales are usually found to be poor workers and get fired in the long run for being complete slackers and mental cases and in the meantime the HR departments of companies end up getting rid of excellent workers because they're so desperately afraid of lawsuits being brought by these passive-aggressive idiots. Political correctness has found its way into every aspect of working life. Corporations already try to discourage any type of relationships at the workplace. If they could outlaw friendship, they would do that too. And there would be little spies reporting that too. "Bill and Fred are friends....I saw them talking about going to the Cubs' game together.....that's illegal according to the employee handbook, you need to address this issue"..............

| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/31/2007 8:58:33 AM | ok my 2 cents worth - bet you hate that one too, probably on the list but, i'll take that chance FYI , isn't useless information if some one brings their business to our office, and leaves some bit of information about our competition, I will share it with other members in the office. Simple "for their information" toodles | |
|
| Words And Phrases That I Despise !! Posted: 5/31/2007 9:25:34 AM | Okay, I need some feedback on this one:
"heads up"
Is "heads up" annoying or not ? For once my processing system has had all of its standard alarms triggered by this one, yet I cannot bring myself to hate it as much as something like "FYI". Am I off my game ? Am I growing tolerant ? What's happening ?
I don't know why, but I've also started using "jiminy cricket". It sounds ridiculous, yet funny at the same time because it's so outdated. Like someone saying "23 skidoo".

| And then there are sports clichés Posted: 5/31/2007 10:40:41 AM | Being a sports editor, I hear those tacky sports clichés every day and I just CAN'T STAND THEM!
"We gave it 110%" Ummm, here's a flash for you. No you didn't. You CAN'T!
Fact is, there's only one person in the hstory of sport who ever gave 110 %. His name was Scott Labron and he died 1 kilometre from the finish of the Toronto Marathon in 2004. Now him, I will grant. He gave it his 110%. It killed him. Just think...if he had only given 100% - the physycal limit - he would have crossed the finish line and lived to talk about it.
"We have our backs to the wall" Oh....well maybe that explains why there's so much room up the middle of the field.
"We have to play one game at a time" Thank you Einstein
There are a ton more...drives me nuts when a coach/player drops something like that in the middle of an interview.
