I'm good with being the secondary, as well -- let them set the agenda. Either works for me.
If we're going to camp, then I do want a trio. You can always separate and agree to meet up at the next waypoint.
Or skip a few waypoints.

If you wish to meet others whilst away hostels are good places to stay at as they have a communal atmosphere but also allow you to get away and do your own thing if you want too. Also acity break may be the best way to start off travelling alone to as it can be less stressful than if you have a lot of connections to make and have limited grasp of the language of the country you are in.

True. It's also why I recommnend hostels.
Also bang on about only hitting one city (or small island). I like the feel after a couple days of knowing where the local grocery store is, getting a cup of coffee or whatever. I've travelled fairly extensively but in the last decade or so prefer returning to places I've been and enjoyed....more of an easy feeling.
Also, French is my first language so I prefer going to French and English speaking islands. No, don't let language limit your choices too much, but if English is one's only language then a trip to the UK or a an english speaking country in Africa, the Caribbean, etc. might be a best first adventure.

| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/3/2012 5:54:37 AM | | That's great you travel on your own. I just got back a week ago from Clermont,Fl which is 6 miles from Disney World. I did it by myself. I rent a car and went about the city. Sometimes Girlfriends or male friends not able to go as you can. Make yourself a travel plan each year and go. I travel by myself most of the time. I always have a good experiences when traveling around the USA. Keep in touch and stay safe. | |

| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/3/2012 11:33:08 AM | | Been there and done that. And it's fun. You feel independant and you can travel around freely. Mind that, I always love travelling someone else. Just makes travelling more memorable. Travelling alone, all depends where you go, you will always been nice people. Like if anyone had a choice of Mexico or Hawaii alone. I'd choose Hawaii over Mexico, For one, its a lot safer to travel there. | |

Not to quibble but that's apples and oranges. Mexico is a huge country with great diversity and hundreds of individual desitinations. Butte, Montana isn't Miami, Florida...it's the same with Mexico....areas arecompletely different fron eachother including crime rates, etc.

Thailand is the best.
Thailand is a wonderful country, and an excellent destination for solo travellers, male or female as it's very safe, Thai people are very friendly, and there is lots of stuff to do. I always feel like crying when I leave the Kingdom. Pom rak muang Thai mak mak, krup.

| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/14/2012 4:18:56 PM | | how about going to Hollywood, or Los Angeles, or Las Vegas- how are they solo, and for women going alone the safety precautions with that? | |
|
| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/14/2012 5:53:06 PM | Nova Scotia..I'll let others comment on LA but Las Vegas is about as safe a destination as there is in the USA if you stick to Glitter Gultch, the Strip, in the Casinos, etc. Security and cameras everywhere. I lived north of Las Vegas for six months and we'd drive down to the city at night in the summer and walk around at 3am...lots of people mingling about. Lots of single women. Women in groups of all ages. Yes, there are some weird characters but more eccentric.. but not the threatening type. Also nice hikes in the area...Valley of fire etc.
Las Vegas is just 'fun'. Total over the top schlock. Where else can you see a pyramid next to a castle across from the Eifel tower? Totally ridiculous in a good way. i like to walk and people watch. I don't even gamble.
|
| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/15/2012 11:25:42 AM | Hi, thank you for bringing up the places to visit in Vegas.. What is the Glitter Gultch, never heard of it?
Also, I want to travel without having to think: "' what if" all the time.. Also California, might be good if I can find a travel deal..
|
| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/15/2012 4:30:49 PM | Glitter Gulch is 'downtown' LV. the Golden Nugget, etc. These days it's a street covered by a giant dome that is a big video screen...hard to describe but you can see youtube videos of it.
Anyways, no need to worry about running out of things to see in Las Vegas....what's not to like about a Venetian square, then visit Caesar's Palace...New York, New York....a bazillion fountains at the Bellagio, etc. All 'crazy' and all within walking distance . Totally silly but fun. Also my girlfriend is nuts over the high end boutiques...Prada, Chanel, etc. We went into Tiffany's (sp?) and I took a photo of her wearing a 1.21 million dollar necklace ...then in Prada posing with handbags, etc. Just a good time.

| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/15/2012 7:46:17 PM | I'm late to this party but wanted to share. I would travel anywhere around the US, Canada, England and Australia by myself with no qualms. I would research everywhere I wanted to go and try to stay away from areas that would not be safe. For instance, there are places in large cities where you might not want to go. As far as being in nature by yourself, learn about the area and take the proper precautions such as making sure you have enough water, fuel for your car, etc.
I did go to Australia when I was 55 years old and spent two weeks with friends but I also spent two weeks by myself in a camper driving from Sydney to the center of the continent and back. It was the best thing I've ever done by myself. I did a lot of research before I went so I familiarized myself with where I wanted to go and what I wanted to see. There was only one time I didn't feel safe and that was in a campground I was going to stay at. I trusted my instincts and didn't stay there but drove further and stayed at a rest area along the road instead. I found out later that the campground where I was going to stay had had problems with the some of the nastier town residents breaking into campers. So, trust your gut feelings.
As far as visiting countries where they don't speak English, I would prefer to go WITH someone especially if visiting spots away from the usual tourist spots. In Mexico, I was able to see a lot more of the non-traditional tourist sites because I was with someone who spoke enough Spanish to get by. Certain places I would like to visit, I would go with a tour. China, Africa, etc.
Well, that was more than 2 cents worth. Oh well.

| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/24/2012 6:58:34 AM | sounds like you have done alot of travelling/ I need to get out of my comfort zone alot. I want to go to the United States, California, Nevada, Florida..
Have to get a passport, and more money and then get more courage probably, not to want to have a companion and go it alone on a journey!
|
| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/24/2012 12:13:19 PM | | If you go to California then I would highly recommend San Francisco to you, in my opinion was far better than Los Angeles. There is a lot to see and the centre was relatively compact. However I was surprised at how quickly there was a change from relatively affluent to poor areas. This could be said for most places I visited in the US though so is something to be aware of. | |
|
| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/24/2012 12:17:13 PM | | Agree with you on Vegas Science, is a rather surreal city to visit. Was very relaxing though after being on the road for three weeks. It was possible to get some very good deals in the casino hotels if you wanted that bit of luxury for a night or two. | |
|
| Traveling Solo Posted: 8/24/2012 4:06:34 PM | Ya, great rates. Sunday to Thursday you can pop down to Laughlin.NV and get a 5 star room for $25 a night. If staying in LV, then keep checking Expedia and a really nice room is usually available for under $50 a mile or so from the Strip. If possible. plan your stay in LV during the weekdays and and avoid going when the biggy conventions are on. the difference can by a third the price of a room and half the price for a car rental.
It's similar going to Maui, Cuba etc. A week difference can mean half the price in airfare and accomodation. Maui and Cuba are full of Canadian families going when their kids are out of school during winter break. A week either side can mean a total vacation with airfare costing $1200 for a week instead of $2500.

| Traveling Solo Posted: 9/23/2012 2:18:49 PM | Love travelling solo. It's a nice chance to just be on your own and soak things up in your own way. You call all the shots, you're completely in control of your adventure ;).
But there is something to be said about travelling when it's done with the right companions :)

| Traveling Solo Posted: 10/13/2012 11:30:44 AM | | I've been travelling solo for years, and I've been to Italy twice alone with Rome being the favourite spot for me. Sooo much history that I can't get enough. in 2010 I visited London and Paris, and I am considering going back next summer to do four days in London and then taking the train across the English Channel again for a four day stay in Paris. These are all great places to discover solo, and not once did I feel unsafe. Most staff at hotels and restaurants and tourist places in each of these cities speak English, but I had no problem as I speak fluent French and Italian . Just get yourself a good guide book and away you go. If you want to stick to the US, I've been to NYC four times solo, and had a blast. Vegas works too. | |

| Traveling Solo Posted: 10/19/2012 2:25:37 PM | I don't like to pay (as in a vacation) to travel solo.
I have done a lot of solo traveling for business, and not the typical business traveling where you are there a few days and leave. I was in different cities for a month and many times go back for another month, so it's a little like I live there after a few weeks. I liked it, expense account, nice hotel, rental car, work 8 + hours, see the sites, maybe date someone locally. Maybe drive out of the state for the weekend, pretty much do whatever struck my fancy.
But I don't care for pleasure travel solo, and there is no reason to do that regardless even if you are single.
If you are single, sign onto a dating site in the area you are wanting to visit, and arrange some dates ahead of time.
You can get a tour of the area by a romantic partner, it's a great way to really get to know the natives where ever you want to go.
