How important is wearing a hat to you?

What about hats is considered rude or offensive to the point that everyone seems so dead set against them being worn inside? Is there an actual purpose or some sort of reasoning behind it, or is it just because that's how it's always been? . If I were to say, wear my hat inside, it's because I want to wear my hat and I probably didn't comb or style my hair that morning. Not because I'm intending to disrespect anyone. I've always been curious about the reasoning behind the concept of a hat symbolizing contempt or disrespect because it's so random, silly, and senseless..

A man should take off his hat when he enters a restaurant. There may be some exceptions for reasons of religious accomodation (e.g. Sikh turban), but otherwise it's hats off. Baldness is no excuse. People with no class have no business in an upscale restaurant.
