I've often wondered the same thing but I live in Pennsyltucky, everyone here has a Harley Davidson or one of the Japanese "crotch rockets". I see them mostly around town but not that much on the highway....I guess I must be missing the point or something because the times I have ridden have never made me want to give up driving a car, plus I am not into that mean, tattooed tough guy biker image because it is just a front... I almost bought a Hurricane 600 when I turned 18 but I kept thinking "I can do way more with that Monte Carlo and not have to hide under a bridge when it rains".

So tell me. what does if cost you each year to do spring maintenenance on your ride? If you are in the correct range of what this service costs, those of us that own one will know if you do too!

I think it's because there has been a boom in North America of all types bike-like vehicles and 'toys' like crotch rockets apart from the upper management types who yearn for the freedom and luxury of top of the line Harleys.

The guys on here are primarily between 30 and 50, divorced, and at their peek earning levels. They want some of the things they may have given up when they settled down, I think.

It's the 40th anniversary of flower power and people are nostalgic too. It's sad that everybody but those who started it all gets to ride their bikes because of the political and police climate but such is the way it is.

The motorcycle rider is the modern day cowboy, on an iron horse. It's instant cool, the clothes, the sound, slipping through the traffic, topping the hill and seeing ,,,,,,,, everything.
No kids, radio, TV, stop for a coffee whenever, kickstand down next to the door, and we are special. Not everyone wants to or can do what we do. People in cars are in a cage, they need a lot of space, they are in a race to get somewhere, sometime soon and we are just going.

^^^ Well putVSTAR.

It's not just this site it's everywhere. I see more and more bikes on the road
every year. There are many reasons. For me I like the social aspect of it. After a ride and you're pulling into a coffe shop or burger barn evryone becomes your friend. So many people have stories to tell about their own experiances and for some reason are compelled to tell it to a total stranger just because they are a fellow rider. I can't call up a friend and say "here's an idea. how about you get in your car and I'll get in mine and we drive to the next town for lunch." They would think I'm an idiot. But you call someone and say "wanna go for a ride." And the answer is always Yeah man.

people like to ride motorcycles because they feel free and alive without any worries. some ofthe guys on this site (my theory) are guys that you have to watch out for. they think women are all hung up about a biker-type bad boy. some of them are looking for a harem or a "****". So a motorcylce becomes "bait" to women, because these guys have one and know that women like to ride too. i also think guys get off having the women wrap her legs around him with their tits pressed up against his back. so it can be a sexual thing also. no big deal, i like to and have ridden, but i dont follow the "bad boy" culture. The "motorcycle theory" is just one of the cultural things of American Society that makes us one big conglomeration. If it's your thing, why not? What do YOU have a "thing" about?
The problem with a lot of motorcycle owners is that they forget about everything else! The same goes for car freaks, or any other kind of "toy" that someone gets obsessed about! They pour money into it and if you even touch it you can get your ass kicked! "Don't mess with my toys!!"
im writing this kinda fast and probably have not said everything i would like to say but not EVERYONE on this site rides motorcycles! look deeper, why dont you?

That's exactly what I was thinking when I was warm and dry as I drove past a couple of motorcyclists who were soaked to the bone during a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon. They didn't appear free to me. They appeared stuck! But I'm sure they felt alive with all the lightning around them!

The motorcycle rider is the modern day cowboy, on an iron horse. It's instant cool, the clothes, the sound, slipping through the traffic, topping the hill and seeing ,,,,,,,, everything.

They don't see everything. One cut me off yesterday and I had to slam on my breaks, thinking, "You better be glad I was paying attention--because you weren't."

That's the major reason why many men ride motorcycles: it's seen as cool. Geez! Create your own definition of cool. Don't just buy into someone else's definition.

People in cars are in a cage, they need a lot of space, they are in a race to get somewhere, sometime soon and we are just going.

Total generalization. You're in a cage when you feel like you're in a cage. It's a mindset, an attitude. What you ride or drive has little to do with it.

If you like your motorcycle, then great. Kudos! You're right. They aren't for everyone, but that doesn't mean that anyone is less of a person because they don't ride one. I've been on a few cycles, and I did feel more connected while traveling, but there are many people who ride them for the cool factor--and their only connection is, "Hey! Look at me! I'm cool." Who gives a sh*t? Not every cyclist is cool. Like any other group of people, some are great people and some are idiots.

Hate to be the nay sayer but I wouldn't get on any machine that weighs more than a person can pick up and will fall over when you stop in some situations. A car is just safe and more reasonable.

I will tell you, however, that a female friend of mine who owned her own bike described it as a very effective vibrator and I believe that accounts for the interest as much as anything else whether you are the rider or passenger. In other words, a cheap thrill.

I will also say that without exception, every motorcycle rider I ever met in my life had at least one story of a fall and a few had very serious injuries. All you have to do is remember when you rode a bicycle as a child - nobody ever rode either for very long without some injury. I never had so much as a scratch in 40 years of driving an automobile with four wheels. The so called "freedom" is an illusion. Unless you are off road biking there is no place you can go on a motorcycle that you can't go in a car unless you include the illegal things like riding between lanes of autos.

Sorry but flying down a highway with nothing to protect you but the clothes on your back is a very silly thing to do in my opinion. You can't hit anything. Not even a fender bender - not even a washboard pavement - not even a pothole. Think back to how many times you drove your car and and accidentally ran over a pot hole or other road defect. On a bike, that might have broken your arm or worse.

When you compare the statistics for motorcycle safety versus car safety you find that motorcycles are just as safe if you ignore the fact that injuries from accidents tend to result in fatalities more often on the motorcycle side of things. Put another way, you are as likely to wreck a car as a bike, but the bike wreck will probably result in greater injury. Death is likely only when you don't wear your helmet, which you really should on any ride where you plan on crashing.

I will not try to explain to a non-rider what is the point of riding a bike, anymore than I would hope to convey what fun is like to a dour, twisted and miserable person whose life was endless boredom offset by occasional unhappiness.

I agree. When you are at liberty to ignore certain aspects of reality almost any conclusion can be drawn statistically. When you compare the average income of people who drive automobiles with those who ride on two wheels, automobile drivers are statistically wealthier if you only compare moped riders with those who drive a Rolls Royce.

The number of motorcyclists on POF is due mainly to there having been advertisement of POF forums in a large number of motorcycle clubsa few years ago. The original intent was to back up a troll who wished to overpower the site out of revenge. Eventually the bad apples were weeded out and the result was a large percentage of the decent motorcycle enthusiasts remaining.

I am sure the same would happen if someone decided to go out and convince certain religious groups to come in to defend some particular point of view. You would eventually wind up with a great number of decent people who were of that persuasion.

Don't misunderstand my point of view. There is nothing wrong with riding on two wheels if you enjoy taking chances with your life. I just am of the opinion that it is more dangerous overall than riding on four wheels. It is like an engineering trade off. Is the fun worth risking life and limb or not?

I have to disagree with msg #17... 'motorcycles are typical a male interest"...
I have to say this is a totally unfounded generalization made through pure ignorance.
And, obviously, I'm not the only biker gal who thinks so....
Figures from 2007 alone show that American women are the fastest-growing segment of the motorcycle business, buying more than 100,000 of them a year, and accounting for at least 10 percent of motorcyclists in the U.S. today. Shiny side Up

I'm very much a city girl, but I jumped on the back of a Harley this last summer and loved it. What a great way to see the scenery without obstructions. I think the reason you don't see a lot of bikes is because they are usually not on the highways. Riding a back road is preferable. Also, riding somewhere early on a Saturday or Sunday morning for breakfast is a blast! You look for places where there aren't a lot of people.

Had'em, sold it for a boat and never looked back.

Sometimes I do wish the Electra Glide was still in the garage but all I have to do is remember that it can't take me to 2/3's of the planet.

Liar... but don't they just look HOT? And then there's the vibration when you're riding on the bike behind all of that damned fit leather!

I have rode a bike , drove a bike and understand the attraction. i have friends with bikes that swear if they get a woman to ride with them its home free.
I guess vibrators in public are a bit too obvious.

I also have been in 8 accidents that involved having my vehicle totaled ( only 1 was my fault) including a 24 car crash where everyone was cited but me.

The kind of luck i have with other drivers ( the last time was a red light running , cell phone freak) makes it impossible to consider exposing my body to whatever idiot in a car is having a cerebral ischemic episode. I hate casts

I do enjoy 4 wheeling off road and have had fun on dirt bikes but carefully, there is more than one way to "bark up the wrong tree " ,
the freedom thing is real off road.. and i can grasp the concept of two wheel independence.. just not a postive equation for me

whenever a woman mentions they like to ride.. i just move on past

i think its a code even they dont recognize...

I have noticed this too of a lot of women's profiles. There's nothing wrong with it and I just think that we who don't ride see that it is becoming increasingly popular. I would love to learn how to ride one. I do drive the next best thing, a convertible, so I do know where they are coming from when they talk about the wind in their hair, the open sky, and the feeling of freedom on the open road.
