Personally, I'm a fan of France. I've always had a bit of Francophile in me I guess, from starting young with Rimbaud and Baudelaire, and then as I got older studying Foucault (admittedly, boring ) , Sartre (wrongheaded politically, but, otherwise interesting), etc. I'm into the Louis XIV era, have studied a lot about him, have a nice bust of him, I think France indeed does get a bad rap for nothing. Beautiful country with beautiful people and culture , and one of the best-sounding languages.

America has long been making fun of france and I think part of it has got to do with America's inferiority complex. America was for the longest time a cultural backwater when compared to the europeans, while france was one of the epicenters for culture.

In terms of military inferiority of the french, I think this was based on the fact that the two major wars of the last century were fought on french soil, and by the time the americans got involved near the end of both wars, the french were either exhausted or beaten.

P.S It might also be based on the fact that the americans resent the fact that they needed the french to get their little country going as Washington wasn't going to do it for them.

Don't get embarrassed, you Americans are just a bit late to the party... (as usual *cough* 1939 *cough*)
Us Brits have been taking the p*ss out of (translation "making fun of") the French for centuries, it's a national pass time!

The thing you have to remember about the French is they don't give a sh*t what anyone else says or thinks. They just do what they want. Always have, always will. Wish the UK Government had that kind of backbone! So we're making fun of a nation that don't care we are making fun of them! Sounds perfect to me!

Let me know if you need any more material to taunt them with, although "Freedom fries" was actually pretty good... I salute you.

why would one assume because Britain made the mistake of aligning allies with Poland, America was supposed to as well????
Because Poland knew and had the backing of France and Britain in their back pocket, they repeatedly snubbed Germany's request to return Danzig and the corridor back to what was previously Germany's land before the treaty of Versailles awarded it from Poland, thus separating Prussia from Germany...HUGE MISTAKE ...HUGE....and it has been noted if Chamberlain had been present or a member during these stubborn requests which fell on deaf ears in Poland, one can almost conclude Poland egged Germany into attacking them and figured with the might of France/Britain/and Poland, Germany could be finally removed as a thorn in the side of Poland...bad mistake

Patton was referring to the problem of French Army members either deserting outright in the face of the enemy in droves or firing The Wrong Way (towards allies)...both of which were a Major problem in WW2. Strictly speaking on a tactical basis, the French Army was a joke, and a bad one in WW2.

Uh huh. Friendly fire was a frequent issue for the french in WW 2? Please. You're stretching. Patton whatever his merits was often a jingoistic ***hole. Please show me where you're getting this magical context for me. You weren't even the originator of the quote. Hell find me citations that indicate a higher quantity of friendly fire from French rather than British or American soldiers.

As for desertion, armies tend to melt when you lose wars.

Lecter was making a joke that could go two ways..."eveything tastes like Chicken" or The French ARE chicken". Either way, have you cooked & eaten a Frenchman lately?? That's the only way to tell which way he was TRULY going with it. On the whole I think eating human would be far worse than Escargot, so I'll leave it to others to try...like the Donner Party.

It's a french joke, the author has never eaten a frenchman either. It wouldn't even BE a joke unless it was that particular joke.

When you actually HAVE prostitutes running your government, it's not a racist statement to point it out.

Really, can you point out any evidence that France is "usually" run by prostitutes?

Check the historical context on Twain vs France. You might be surprised by what he DIDN'T say...

He didn't say, they're a strong colonial power and I have an American inferiority complex thats a combination of not yet being a first rate power, combined with a inhereted resentment towards the french which has it's roots in being an English colony?

How about this, why don't you show me citations that show that France was usually run by prostitutes?

So what exactly are you arguing, that making negative generalizations about an entire countrie's peoples is not in fact racist? or that quoting them is not racist? How about playing semantic games in an absurd effort to defend them?

QUOTE: with a inhereted resentment towards the french which has it's roots in being an English colony

^^^ That's something that is very real at the source of it as well...a sort of cultural thing, which most modern Americans probably don't even realize (because many or most modern Americans are not "Anglos" anymore). But a lot of it, IMO, always had to do with traditional Anglo Protestant vs Gallic/Latin Catholic rivalry and hatred from the 'old country' (so to speak).

"What do you expect from a culture and a nation that exerted more of its national will fighting against Disney World and Big Macs than the Nazis?" Dennis Miller.

Good on the French for standing up for their culture.
They dont want to be as obese As Americans and Australians.
I respect the French also, (Hate their football team), but like how they protect their culture and their industries.
Their car companies are profitable, the American ones are almost bankrupt.

The Free French were Brave, so was the resistance.
Remember after ww1 a lot of American blacks stayed in France to get the equality they werent getting back home.
