| Chuck it all, Sailboat around the world With Kids Posted: 7/14/2009 10:38:38 PM | | Been thinking about it for a while now... The only problem i get sea sick real bad.. But a friend who spend more then 20 years at sea said your body gets used to it and then you are o.k. Maybe sail a small sail boat up the coast to Alaska and back should take 6 months. | |

| Chuck it all, Sailboat around the world With Kids Posted: 8/28/2009 5:17:28 AM | | I'm finally got the old boat sold, well almost, it's a time sale, more than half paid for, they will put it in a work yard to work on it in a couple months. I've bought a new one to fix up while waiting, it's a 27 ft custom dutch steel boat and will be for sale and sail real soon. It's something a solo sailor could comfortably circumnavigate in. Providing it sells, I should push off from Florida late this fall, head to the Islands and then up the east coast to Greenland and beyond. Have a great day. www.jheld.mysite.com Jon | |

| Chuck it all, Sailboat around the world With Kids Posted: 8/28/2009 6:59:40 AM | Dear Friends,
I think that such a thing, home schooling kids on a boat circumnavigating would be, for someone who could afford it financially, an educational experience of the first order.
I, personally, would do it, were I able, without a second thought.
Ports in the sundry countries, the inland excursions, and so forth, would be invaluable lessons. Dropping kids in the usual school systems with any excuse other than economic need is unthinkable to me.
Using garmins is great, but teaching a kid math and trig while holding a sextant is, for want of a better word, real.

| Chuck it all, Sailboat around the world With Kids Posted: 8/28/2009 11:28:26 AM | I've thought about doing this, but not with kids. The whining little youngsters would sorta kill the whole thing. Depends if the kids are down with it.
Bring lots of fresh water and sunblock lotion so Child Protective Services can't come in there and take the little devils away from ya for abuse! | |

| Chuck it all, Sailboat around the world With Kids Posted: 8/30/2009 10:31:53 AM | Never met a whining kid on a boat - they all seem to love it. Mind you, I guess the whiner families have all been winnowed out by the time they get far away from shore. We're bracing for hurricane Jimena - the second worrisome storm after a very early one in June which brought 70 kt winds for about 1 hour. Amazing to experience the eye of a storm. Ten minutes of calm then a howling wind in exactly the opposite direction. Enough for a little excitement but not long enough to do major damage, although some local buildings took a bit of a hit - and not a billboard left in town. Jimena looks set to last a lot longer than that and much worse too. Winds well in excess of 100 kts expected to hit Baja sometime during the week. We moved over to the mainland where only 40 knot winds are predicted, but there are no guarantees when a hurricane comes along. Sometimes they even spawn other nasty storms that don't appear in the forecasts. That's what happened in June just before Andres. Not too worried - there are several hurricanes every year and most people and boats seem to survive them. A major factor is being well prepared. Sails off the boat, decks cleared and anything else tied down. Even dinghies will become airborne during a hurricane - with or without outboards! | |
