| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 10/10/2007 2:18:25 PM | Hell, I think Jamie Hyneman from Mythbusters is the sexiest man alive.
I have also know to have make statements like I'm going to go to MIT and sleep behind Noam Chomsky's door until he says yes....
Also that sped of a jtw1974 is not too bad, kind of a kinky little way

Have you read a woman's magazine lately? Cosmo, Chatelaine, no articles on serious stuff like global warming, because that doesn't concern the put together woman. Intellectuals, is that a new shampoo?
ALL women read that shlock? I'd wager that even those women who do, are very likely just as interested in "serious stuff" as they are in the latest fashions. Women's concerns are varied... just like a mans.
Reading these types of threads, it becomes crystal clear to me that many men on this forum think women are pretty dumb and useless and shallow.
Sad.
I've asked my question this numerous times...why doesn't it make a woman hot and horny when I tell her I'm a computer programmer fluent in at least half a dozen languages.
Did I not mention that it does?

The only reason for this that I can think of is because Hollywood marketing promotes pretty faces as sex symbols rather than the minds of intelligent men.
it's very true that Hollywood and the media have gotten rid of the thinkers and replaced them with pretty faces. it goes both ways. i can't think of any women in this day and age that i'd look up to either. so it's a good thing i'm stuck in the past. i can think of 3 intelligent men that are attractive in my mind and who i look up to. pete townshend of The Who, roger waters once of Pink Floyd and brian may of Queen who actually has a degree in astrophysics. they have the fame, the money and everything else... but they still have the brains too.

| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 10/21/2007 7:21:32 PM | | I like Brian May, he wrote Fat Bottomed Girlz, right? But hey, who says intellectuals cannot be sexy? They are there, just not popping up on magazine covers. | |

| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 10/21/2007 8:05:21 PM | When I was a little geek (oops, I mean girl) and all of my little friends were enamored with Bobby Sherman, David Cassidy, etc. They pasted their pictures all over their rooms. I didn`t get it. I had a very different kind of man in mind, that I held close to my 12 year old beating heart. Every time I heard him say "billions and billions of stars" it sent me to the moon! Of course I speak of the late- great mega geek Dr. Carl Sagan. I watched with baited breath every new episode of the PBS series, "Cosmos". His detailed commentaries on the substance of the universe, donned in a garish plaid sport jacket and black mock turtle kneck, overpronounced, overblown wordage: to my young mind, a cerebral orgasm! Of course I would have never told my little friends for fear of rejection, or my mom, for fantasizing of a grown man at 12, fearing an appointment with a counselor. So I kept Carl close and safe in the privacy of my nightly fantasy. Carl, wherever you are in the Cosmos of space and time, you are still my main man! | |

| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 10/21/2007 11:05:54 PM | OP in msg.#40 says:
That's exactly why I'm having second thoughts about pursuing a career in academic research. You need to work so hard and you get so little credit. Most women won't be interested in you, except for the ones that are intellectuals themselves. Duh... Isn't that a little like not wanting to be a member of any club that would have somebody like you as a member? Don't you find female intellectuals sexy enough? What's the problem?

| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 10/22/2007 12:35:06 AM | At the moment I have a big crush on Robert Kennedy, Jr. And yes, FOR HIS MIND.
And I actually consider Jon Stuart an intellectual--and he's my current total fantasy man.
And no, I don't read Cosmo.

| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 10/22/2007 12:39:58 AM | Well if you are having 2nd thoughts for THAT reason, its not enough. Research in and of itself is often a lofty goal, but the $$$ is also a strong reason, or...ahem.....helping our "man"kind? Work is work. If all you do is work in life, then I pity you(but i doubt that is it). Work is PART of life, just as relationships are part of who we are-become-strive to be. Get better grounded in where you are going, who you are, and the combo of the two, please? Please undeerstand this is NOT a personal attack, just my feeble thoughts on a forum page. If I have offended you, I apologize.

| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 10/22/2007 12:47:57 AM | I would name Barbara Walters as a very intelligent woman(and still a looker-in her own way), Diane Sawyer has a great mind, Connie Chung is both brilliant, talented AND lovely. Dr. Joyce Brothers is articulate, witty, brilliant and still a nice looking lady. Even Hilary, while i do not like her politics or some of her ideas, has to have more than average intellignece to not only survive but succeed in politics, which is a VERY vicious world. I find Star Jones a gifted speaker, a quick and witty conversationalist AND extremely smart. the fact that she is also very pretty and sexy is just a plus, in a combined package. Its the whole image, not just the pretty face, to me. Sure 1st impressions can be important, but its NOT the whole enchilada, fer chrissakes!!
Steve
P.S. Again, its just my 2 cents, here.

| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 12/10/2007 1:37:01 PM | | Did I miss something? Takes an intellectual person to garner 20 mil a film, sure as anything Brad and Tom are doing better probably then everyone on this list put together. Remember Phoebe from friends, Hot HOT HOT, and a member of MENSA! | |

Its because no one has romantic notions of a hot scientist in a lab discovering the secret to gravity. Well, no, but they do talk about chemistry a lot...

Mistress Dolly (the original)
If women are attracted to a man's intellect, why does there seem to be a lack of intellectuals that are well known sex symbols? Can you name any? Instead woman seem to enthralled by Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise, not intellectuals like Noam Chomsky. .
|
| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 12/10/2007 7:56:13 PM | I'd like to echo your sentiments.
Many people seem to mention that there are no good looking intellectuals. This is far from the truth. Sex symbols, as was the original topic, have a lot to do with popular culture. Everyone follows the media and the celebs, who are regarded as sex symbols. This does not mean that scientists aren't good looking, merely that they aren't considered sex symbols.
Often very smart people are very good looking. It's not always the case, and I'm not trying to prove anything, but many people are jumping to the misleading conclusion that lack of intellectual sex symbol infers a lack of sexy intellectuals.
Cheers! | |

| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 12/10/2007 9:44:30 PM | | Because all you need to be a movie star is good looks and the ability to memorize your lines. There are plenty of celebrities that are extremely intelligent, just as there are in all walks of life. I would so much rather spend an evening with a man who can carry on an intelligent, witty conversation, than with a 'pretty face' who is brain-dead. The intelligent man becomes more handsome and sexy as the evening progresses, while the 'pretty boy' becomes uglier and uglier. | |

| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 5/2/2008 7:50:07 PM | "If women are attracted to a man's intellect, why does there seem to be a lack of intellectuals that are well known sex symbols?"
OK ... this is an easy one. not all women are the same! What difference does it make that an average woman is looking for a body and not a mind? Don't go after average women. There are plenty of women who love intelligence in a man, and for some like me ... the more intellect the better.
|
| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 5/2/2008 7:59:27 PM | Who the hell is Noam Chomsky? Isn't he some linguoist or something?
Hugh Hefner is a sex symbol...at least he has sexy girls and that symbolizes something...
Tom Cruise and Johhny Depp are sex symbols and if you ever watch their interviews...seem very grounded and intelligent...so I'm not sure what your getting at...
Are you suggesting that one needs the recognition of their fellow "smart" peers before they are considered intellectuals?
Does Noam Chomsky have the intelligence to act a amazing part in a movie and make millions want to see it?
This topic is so stupid...intelligence is a lot more than just what Noam Chomsky does...
Most brilliant men are also no interested in public attention, they spend a lot of alone time, which is what allows them to become brilliant in their field. This brilliance often comes at the cost of a happy family, etc...

| Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols Posted: 7/8/2008 12:19:34 AM | | Try to rephrase the question and you may find a different answer. That is woman are attracted to status and at times power. Point? Cops, military, presidents, give me a high profiled person in any field and I would guarentee there are woman that would not otherwise be attracted to them. Evolutionaly psychology would dictate that woman seek security and that can mean power, status, money. Men are designed to look for breeding qualities, bright eyes, symetrical features, etc. Are woman attracted to hot men, of course. But the reality is most generally the hot men only get so far without other qualities. Nothing is worse than finding out hot guy is a "Man-bo" (male version of bimbo). Excuse me man-bo, I need some mental stimulation! Woman are equally as shallow and really want it all, as do men. But I don't think hot guy comes out the winner over that of a (now here is the secret) DOWN TO EARTH smart guy, that can carry a conversation, take care of himself, and treat a lady like a lady, and take home and ... In short, a woman want security even when they are secure in themselves. But if the male is not attractive, he better have a different "super" quality. Pay attention next time you are watching a live band with a beer guzzling sweaty lead singer. Prior to playing --NO chick for fat sweaty guy. Give that same guy a mic and guitar and there is a guarentee he is goinng home with someone. Super, super: smart, talented, wealthy, powerful, funny, and at times attractive is what wins in the end. | |

How many females would say something like 'Oh rocket scientists really makes my panties wet! Oh yes give it to me Mr Rocket Man!' Anyone?
Quite a few have said it to me, including a coulpe who managed to land in magazines. I'm not Brad Pitt, but being highly intelligent goes a long way toward never being boring in the sack. I put as much creative thought into sex as I do quantum field theory.
