Lack of Intellectuals as Sex Symbols

george clooney *is* intelligent - you only have to listen to him speak to realize that

sean connery is another "sex symbol" type, who is intelligent as well as attractive

i think some people believe all actors to be insipid brainless gorms because that's how they're often portrayed in the media... or to be more fair - the media focuses on those individuals in the entertainment industry who are perhaps not as intellectually bright as their peers - or at least, more accident prone...

i think that most thespian types are at least moderately intelligent - they have to be, to memorize scripts and investigate and internalize the roles effectively whilst following direction and listening for cues...

however, "sex sells" and as the brain is a rather mushy looking object, the publicists tend to focus on more outward attributes...

imo

(reading some of the comments, it appears that some want it to be an "either or" situation - but i agree with those who say, it is very possible to have both the looks and intelligence, one doesn't rule out the other...and they can even be *nice* too! ;))

(another comment i have is - look at the industry's some of these celebrity's have built up - maybe those people aren't always the sharpest in terms of wit - but street and society smarts, i'd say they've got it goin' on ;))

I really like Jeremy Paxman, Will Self, and I used to like Max Hastings. Stephen Hawking is supposed to be a fantastic lover ... so I have heard.

Let me just inform the seeming plethora of male opinions - being that women are not interested in a man's intellect, but rather his visual and financial appeal - that they are incorrect.

I am no Brad Pitt. I'm overweight, and I wear unmatched clothes, socks in my sandals and don't use deodorant in summer. Yet in my summer class, the hottest woman in the class (probably more than 10 years older than me) has the hots for me, because I'm intellectual, I share my insights, and I am able to laugh at myself.

It is not your lack of money or beauty that makes you unappealing. It is rather your negative attitude that negates your potential charisma. Otherwise you'd find that women want a smart man, and are getting desperately tired of the same old meatheads.

Don't keep the girls waiting, will ya?

If women are attracted to a man's intellect, why does there seem to be a lack of intellectuals that are well known sex symbols? Can you name any? Instead woman seem to enthralled by Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise, not intellectuals like Noam Chomsky. The only reason for this that I can think of is because Hollywood marketing promotes pretty faces as sex symbols rather than the minds of intelligent men.

Ask the women who watch CSI which character on there they find to be the sexiest. 90% of these women, myself included, will say Grissum. Why? Not only is he rather very handsome.... with or without the beard, he is brilliant! He is brilliant, gentlemanly, witty (not the same as brilliant), and has the ability to make everyone, from the fury episode to the little people to the BBW's to Lady Heather, feel important without pretending. When he is kind to someone, it is genuine.

Ask the women who watch House why they love him. He is abrassive and rude and mean and bossy. He is rather good looking in a rugged sort of way. But.... he is also brilliant. Not as friendly as Grissim.... but just as smart.

*I* think another very sexy man on TV is Mike Rowe (Host of Dirty Jobs). I have seen him on several news shows and comentaries and other things.... he is witty, brilliant, very charming.... but totally natural at all of it too.

The thing about putting the "pretty faces" out there is JUST a Hollywood thing. Some women love the view. *I* loved Brad Pitt in Fight Club. But, there again... he played a very smart character. Women will, nine times out of ten, fall for the handsome smart/witty man over the pretty faced man who.... well... that is all he offers.

And ya know, I would like to twist this to....

That depends, are we talking Orlando as he played Legolis (blond, blue eyed, whimsical elf) or just Orlando playing a pirate with his dark hair?

Legolis was a very wise and witty elfe. Had that whole "shiny" aspect. But who cares, Sean Been was in that. Haven't a clue why the normal looking Orlando is much. I was watching Eric Bano in Troy and of course Johnny Depp in... was Orlando even in those movies?? LOL!! Anyway, Orlando Bloom isn't really my type. You may wish to ask someone else who is into him :)
