| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 6/5/2007 4:24:59 PM | I'd like to think I'm pretty sharp. I work with some of the best minds in the country but bugger me they are boring. Academically these people are amazing, however they lack humor, sarcasim and more importantly, to keep to the thread, spontanious come backs when unprepared. Sorry about the spelling mistakes MS office is playing up!! | |

Programmes on the television like QI for instance. There are many examples there that are hillariously witty, but may not appeal to the less intelligent simply because thet do not recognise the reference or inference.

But sarcasm is wit........ The lowest form maybe but it is wit

You have to be careful that the wit doesn't become sarcasm, there's a very thin dividing line between the two aaah someone with a very good point. I wonder if you could help me further cos......... ummmm..... well....I'd really like to know how thick is "very thin" in the dividing line 'cos I feel I often cross it but if I knew the thickness then I would have a better chance of survival.

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 11/13/2007 5:22:51 PM | This surely depends on what you define as "intelligence" really
Many people guage it on qualifications achieved and the ability to study and apply
But much of that relies merely on regurgitation and a good memory, and much of the application is inherrant and requires little to no mental agility outside of remembering an exact solution for an exact problem
Many of the most academically qualified people I have known are also some of the thickest I've ever met
They lack common sense, cant think outside of very rigid frameworks and are stumped whenever they need to use what they have learnt to create a solution to a problem they havent been taught the answer to
Also, many of them think very S L O W L Y even when solving unbelievably simplistic problems
BUT, to SOME people they WILL be classed as above average intelligent
On the flip side you have people who for various reasons would struggle to attain qualifications, but have an exceptional mind thats able to visualise, create and solve problems on the fly even where the problem has never been seen before and the solution has to be created from scratch
So I would call that someones level of mental agility, not simply what they can regurgitate, but a scale of how quickly their mind can assimilate information, process it and then come up with a solution
As wit in its purest form needs a high amount of mental agility because a "quick witted" reply that comes an hour after the comment its in response to hardly counts, and as some wit can be quite a complex train of thought it can hardly be managed by dulards but will often leave academically "intelligent" people in total confuddlement it would seem to be linked to a different form of intelligence rather than the presence or absence of an exclusive form of intellect
Sarcasm raises the bar even higher, as sarcasm in its best form is far more complex a construct than humour or wit and also requires a very quick intellect to have the best effect
The phrase "sarcasm if the lowest form of wit" I would therefore totally disagree with, I think its the highest because of being more complex, but I think that phrase is one chanted as a mantra quite often by people who arent sufficiently mentally agile enough to either create or understand sarcasm
So they instead denigrate it so they can feel better about themselves

I am in awe at the level of intelligence, and the eloquent manner of your posting..
I would agree that sarcasm is not the lowest form of wit, but the highest form of dark humoured wit..

I got the head to head skills, almost a decade of trying to banter with crack heads who think they have all the answers to life.. makes them realise they need more skills than their street knowledge to defeat me!
But what does that prove exactly?
Thats not true intelligence really is it, thats just social verbal gymnastics lets be honest. Every sharp, quit witted salesman got it... but hows that compare to true intelligence?
Thats the pound for pound fight of the century.. wit v intelligence.
I'll hold my own with some intelligence but the true intelligent ones back off and laugh at the young pups giving it all they got!!
p.s. Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience. .

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 11/14/2007 4:36:10 AM | My dad has a degree and was very quick witted, he is senile now. My mom was an actress and was damn good at comedy! Given the number of out takes she can talk about! A quick wit was needed to cover the gaffs! Especially when she worked with harry H Corbett! Anyways, I have a degree, but am witless! (Actually not that smart either!) My hubby was the wittiest person I ever met! Example to make you smile.... he'd been in Singapore for 3 months, Came home horny as hell, well he would be! he also wanted to see his kids, all on the same night! We lived in a 27ft caravan, so romance was not so good, given the caravan rocked! Ehhum! Well he got amorous and half way through there was this little tap on the door and a wee voice said "Daddy I need to pee, can you come?" And Stu said "Thats what I'm trying to do son!" See what I mean? Killed me, still laughing about it twenty years on! You make yer own mind up on that!!!!!!!! | |

Posted: 11/14/2007 4:48:54 AM | I agree Cunning_linguist I believe wit is somewhat related to intelligence ... but there is a greater relationship between it and the speed with which the mind works ... those that are truly witty in my books do not even appear to take the time to think ... it just rolls off their tongue and out their mouth ...

Oh my Gawd!!
THAT is so very very Wow.. It has that bit of intelligence, wit, sarcasm, humour, everything.. The bit about 'punch a few rounds of verbal dialect down the local with me' has some sort of male power.. trembling effect.. And that 'lets see who comes off the champ' has that trembling effect too.. (no messing about with me okay?! You hear!?)
And then..... That very posh punch line.. makes me laugh both my socks off.. arrrr..
Tan Y Ddraig.. surely you can at least laugh together with the rest of us.. at this very posh thingy?
By the way wit and intelligence are related i think

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 11/14/2007 5:35:32 AM | Actually posh (and hiya) I'm such a lightweight that the average 12 year old girl guide could probably drink me under the table (and before my antifan club pipes in "drink me under the table ISNT a euphamism for an oral act )
At which point I would revert to incoherrant nonsense rather than my usual coherrant form of nonsense and you'd whoop my ass (which is cool as I normally have to pay extra for that kind of special treatment )
Sarcasm as the lowest form of wit however is a very bigotted "hieghtest" comment however and there really should be a campaign to stop its lack of stature being used as a descriptive addition because it causes some sarcasm to be extremely self conscious and to suffer from depression
malley, the mind isnt exactly a linear processing device, the most fundamental essence of its ability to work is its branched parallel extrapolation of thought. So although it can be seen to be and function as something that sequentially works along a train of thought as is the case where a sequential maths problem is solved the same interconnections can just as effectively all function simultaneously linking millions or maybe billions of thoughts, experiences, instincts, social input factors, inherent knowledge and previously formed assumptions and facts to arrive at a unique end result
Although that wont seem "reasoned" or "thought" when compared to a linear problem it is still a created thought and a measure of some form of intellect/mental agility
This is most clearly highlighted by the people who WILL arrive at the exact same gag or retort, but will do so a few minutes later or in some cases a day or more after a comment was made
So at the time they were aware of the window of "guffawability", they sensed they "could" come up with a cool response hence remembering it, but they lacked the mental speed/agility to formulate the output in the same time someone else would have
It can also be seen in fairly quick witted people who experience a "lag" when their mind is distracted with other more pressing things
So the closest thing I can see to this is the IQ test, where arriving at an answer isnt the ONLY benchmark, but how long it takes you to arrive it is a large part of the weighting and therefore the basis of the level of intellect
I'd wager that quick witted people would on average do better at an IQ test than someone more slow witted, not necessarily because they are more "intelligent" by other benchmarks, but because their cognition just works faster and is capable of a much more "spatial" way of processing accrued data to arrive at an answer if that makes sense

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 11/14/2007 10:38:40 AM | Given that 'wit' is defined as "the capacity for inventive thought and quick understanding; keen intelligence", I can only conclude that not only are the two linked, but that wit cannot exist without intelligence.
Therefore, the answer to the question is "yes".
If it helps, 'intelligence' is defined as "the capacity to acquire and apply knowledge and skills".

| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 1/21/2009 6:02:37 AM | quick wittedness (real word?) is most definatley related to a degree of intelligence. everyone thinks thay have a good sense of humour, but not everyones sense of humour is alike. i cant abide slapstick personally, but love witty banter, and know that i always get along a lot better with someone that is articulate and quick witted.
to reiterate someone's post earlier, there is a fine line betw quick wit & sarcasm & truly derogatory sarcasm. being nasty/mean is that funny
|
| Are Wit And Intelligance Related? Posted: 1/21/2009 6:22:35 AM | The only definition of intelligence which has been made is "a measure of evaluating intelligence tests'. Its a cop out I know but there really is no definition of intelligence.
Personally I associate intelligence with quick wit. What is strange though is that many so called 'intelligent' people are devoid of common sense. Can't have it all I guess
