| Name the artist you feel was the most infulential in the birth of RockNRoll Posted: 9/6/2008 9:39:43 AM | the key question relates to THE BIRTH of rock and rock, not those who popularized it.
people like robert johnson, muddy waters and leadbelly. that era's black folks was the birth. the people who came later made it more mainstream.
there's a whole wall devoted to these folks at the rock and roll hall of fame in cleveland. i studied each one and listened to the old recordings. truly these folks of the early 30's were the birth of rock and roll.
technology helped and when les paul invented the electric guitar it gave this music a vehicle to audiate it.

| Name the artist you feel was the most infulential in RockNRoll Posted: 9/8/2008 8:37:31 PM | | when are people going to give up the myth les paul invented the electric guitar....he invented a great many things but that was not one. Rickebacker indrouced the lap steel electric in 1931.Gibson was making the ES150 starting in 1936, and paul bigsby , merl travis and leo fender were making/perfecting solidy body guitars in the late 40's . So les was NOT the inventor, and did little to nothing in creating the les paul. | |

The popularity was rather small, limited to people who could get access to clubs and small radio stations that played that "black/hoodlum" music. This is true of Rock in the 20's and 30's...even mid 40's however, by the late 40's radio stations in as far away markets as Cleveland Oh were playing Rock N Roll music then called "race" music to audiances that were predominately of European American ancestry and record stores accross the nation had sections devoted to "race" music often times under various other labels/headings. Look at the timeline and its clear that even without Elvis the music was becoming increasingly popular among European Americans accross the nation. By the early 50's BEFORE Elvis there were essentially rock concerts accross the nation with acts that were bringing yet more listeners. The explosion of Rock was eminent in my opinion and the facts seem to bear this out.
He was a white man doing "black" music, and that was a seismic shock to the culture of the time. Again I make the comparasion of Elvis to Vanilla Ice or Eminem. It was done before any of them. European Americans had been "doing "black" music for at least well over a century. The long history of Minstrel shows and Jazz is proof of that. Little difference between Elvis and Benny Goodman. You can argue that they were a leap from Thomas Rice in a sense but not in terms of popularizing the respective genre of African American musical culture.
As for Elvis impressing John Lennon(who I think is overrated),again you are speaking of POPULARITY....this thread is NOT about who commercialized the music the most or who was the most popular artist. In any argument of most commercial or most popular in the west,Elvis would be central in that discussion.
However, MUSICALLY Elvis presented NOTHING new.
Agreed, BINGO, thus not the most inflencial MUSICALLY which is what this thread is about(did anyone read my(the OP) original posts on this thread to get clearity as to what this thread is about?). Again, the following is what Elvis said about the music;
A lot of people seem to think I started this business, but rock 'n' roll was here a LONG time before I came along. Nobody can sing that kind of music like "colored people". Let's face it, I can't sing like Fats Domino can. I KNOW that."

The feed back problem was not an issue with lap steels so really not invention but application, but paul bigsby was doing the same thing as less

He was a country-swing act until he covered "Rocket 88" (Ike Turner), then they started playing "Jump" music in the style of Big Joe Turner, Louis Prima and Louis Jordan. Early rock n' roll goes back decades before these guys.
Great thread. | |

| Name the artist you feel was the most infulential in the birth of RockNRoll Posted: 8/4/2009 4:53:10 PM | The answer is quite simply Jesus. The roots of rock and roll are an extension of church hymns and you still find the same elements even in todays rhythm centred rock. We all have Elvis to thank for popularizing the "style" , and the electric guitar with its changing sound caused an explosion of interest in young musicians but in the end the "church band" started it all. All you need for a rock and roll song is a gospel hymn and an electrick guitar. Just substitute the word Jesus with Baby.
Don' forget Eddie Cochran.
