the key question relates to THE BIRTH of rock and rock, not those who popularized it.

people like robert johnson, muddy waters and leadbelly. that era's black folks was the birth. the people who came later made it more mainstream.

there's a whole wall devoted to these folks at the rock and roll hall of fame in cleveland. i studied each one and listened to the old recordings. truly these folks of the early 30's were the birth of rock and roll.

technology helped and when les paul invented the electric guitar it gave this music a vehicle to audiate it.

theres and undercuurent of blues in alot of beatles songs that doesnt get noticed.songs like i me mine, yer blues, why dont we do it in the road, while my gutiar gently weeps featuring clapton and so on.the rolling stones were a great band but they were from well off families manicuring a blues image, while in the beginning the beatles were really living the blues playing dingy clubs in hamburg and wearing leather and just surviving-then for commerciality they donned suits on the advise of thier manager-the beatles were just has dirty as the stones but this gets overlooked.paul mccartney used to meet up with long john baldry and head down to the docks to get blues records from the long shoremen.long john baldry was on of the fathers of the brit blues scene that included alexis korner and cyril davies-these men would later have sit in or have join there later bands -bill wyman, brian jones, rod stweart, elton john, mickey waller, keith richards etc,i like both the stones and the beatles they have given us great music.

i would like to wave a flag for the stax records house band-booker t and the mgs for being a huge influence in rock music after its creation.not only were they funky but they combined earthy blues and soul sensibilities with bits of country ,r&b and other influences.they inspired bands that played blues ,rock, soul, funk, dance music, heavy metal,r&b genres.,simple ,direct and complex at the same time, they could back up anybody.mutli racial and progressive they smashed barriers backing up otis redding, sam and dave and doing there own show aswell.there influence is still felt today thru films like the blues brothers and the stax catalouge.

when are people going to give up the myth les paul invented the electric guitar....he invented a great many things but that was not one. Rickebacker indrouced the lap steel electric in 1931.Gibson was making the ES150 starting in 1936, and paul bigsby , merl travis and leo fender were making/perfecting solidy body guitars in the late 40's . So les was NOT the inventor, and did little to nothing in creating the les paul.

The popularity was rather small, limited to people who could get access to clubs and small radio stations that played that "black/hoodlum" music.
This is true of Rock in the 20's and 30's...even mid 40's however, by the late 40's radio stations in as far away markets as Cleveland Oh were playing Rock N Roll music then called "race" music to audiances that were predominately of European American ancestry and record stores accross the nation had sections devoted to "race" music often times under various other labels/headings. Look at the timeline and its clear that even without Elvis the music was becoming increasingly popular among European Americans accross the nation. By the early 50's BEFORE Elvis there were essentially rock concerts accross the nation with acts that were bringing yet more listeners. The explosion of Rock was eminent in my opinion and the facts seem to bear this out.

He was a white man doing "black" music, and that was a seismic shock to the culture of the time.
Again I make the comparasion of Elvis to Vanilla Ice or Eminem. It was done before any of them. European Americans had been "doing "black" music for at least well over a century. The long history of Minstrel shows and Jazz is proof of that. Little difference between Elvis and Benny Goodman. You can argue that they were a leap from Thomas Rice in a sense but not in terms of popularizing the respective genre of African American musical culture.

As for Elvis impressing John Lennon(who I think is overrated),again you are speaking of POPULARITY....this thread is NOT about who commercialized the music the most or who was the most popular artist. In any argument of most commercial or most popular in the west,Elvis would be central in that discussion.

However, MUSICALLY Elvis presented NOTHING new.

Agreed,
BINGO, thus not the most inflencial MUSICALLY which is what this thread is about(did anyone read my(the OP) original posts on this thread to get clearity as to what this thread is about?).
Again, the following is what Elvis said about the music;

A lot of people seem to think I started this business, but rock 'n' roll was here a LONG time before I came along. Nobody can sing that kind of music like "colored people". Let's face it, I can't sing like Fats Domino can. I KNOW that."

I thought Les Paul was noted for developing multi-tracking and solving feedback problems with those early electric guitars.

the nazi 's invented multi tracking tape recording, les just utilized it full possibilities in a dazzeling way. The feed back problem was not an issue with lap steels so really not invention but application, but paul bigsby was doing the same thing as less

Without beethoven I dont think our musicians would be so very secure to think outside the box. His complexity surely left a resonating presense in our wonderfully colorful music.

That would be Bill Haley and His Comets who did Rock Around the Clock.

He was a country-swing act until he covered "Rocket 88" (Ike Turner), then they started playing "Jump" music in the style of Big Joe Turner, Louis Prima and Louis Jordan. Early rock n' roll goes back decades before these guys.

Great thread.

The answer is quite simply Jesus. The roots of rock and roll are an extension of church hymns and you still find the same elements even in todays rhythm centred rock.
We all have Elvis to thank for popularizing the "style" , and the electric guitar with its changing sound caused an explosion of interest in young musicians but in the end the "church band" started it all. All you need for a rock and roll song is a gospel hymn and an electrick guitar. Just substitute the word Jesus with Baby.

Don' forget Eddie Cochran.

Muddy Waters hands down. Wikipedia his name, you'll find he influenced a whole bunch of rock and roll greats. Let's not forget Les Paul for his invention of the electric guitar.

For sure it was Sam Phillips at Sun records. Without his vision no Elvis, Orbison, Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash, and countless black artists. He opened the floodgates of black music reaching the mass white audience of the 50s.

Elvis and those who made him made it popular, but Link Wray made it lethal.

Link Wray was the one who discovered distortion and feedback. Then Townshend (with the help of Moonie's insane skinbeating) kicked it up a notch in The Who.

Buddy Holly. If he hadn't died in '59, the Beatles wouldn't have exploded the way they did in the US.

But that's just my opinion, of course.

..well..it's sometimes said rock and roll was born out of the "delta blues" artists like Muddy waters , John Lee Hooker, T bone walker etc so i imagine they are really the founders of rock and roll:modhammer:

Well that just got easier to answer, Les Paul. If he hadn't promoted the solid body guitar and advanced multi-tracking and tape effects rock would not be the same.
