I'm not in the mood to read what is now a 13 page thread.

To respond to the original "UFC can not compare itself to Boxing" though, why would it want to?

The rule structure of boxing is to beat your opponent either by stoppage or judges decision by punching technique.
Fighters compete, if they are needed, over 12 three minute rounds.

The rules structure of MMA is to beat your opponent either by stoppage or judges decision by punching technique, kicking technique or submission.
Fighters compete, if they are needed, (depending on the match is for title or not) either 3 or 5 five minute rounds.

There are other differences but that'll do for now.
In any case isn't this all a bit Groundhog Day?
Roll on a few months until someone starts the thread again, might not be on this forum though...

MMA NOT UFC is a growing sport that combines Boxing, Wrestling, Ju-Jitsu and other diciplines. MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is the art of fighting. Boxing is the art of punching. Boxing has been around for 100 years (Queensbury rules) or modern day Boxing. MMA has only started to evolve and is just becoming mainstream.

The athleticisim and technical proficiancy of a UFC fighter is extrordinary as is a Boxer but many Boxers have come over from the ring to fight in the octagon with mixed results. There are trainers like Eddie Rouch who believe that MMA will overtake Boxing in the near future in both talent and PPV revenue.

Eddie Roach is well known in the Boxing circles as the trainer of such guys like Manny Pquio and Oscar DeLa Hoya.

First learn the sport before you bash it. These are terrific athletes that display superior athleticisim and sportsmanship through combat. MMA is here to stay and is growing everyday. Get used to it.

I tend to lean towards boxing..UFC is just so sloppy to me. Granted some great knock outs, but the only graceful thing I see is how some of the guys fall. Boxing is "The Sweet Science" for a reason. There is more foot work, crisper, cleaner punching styles, I guess to sum it up in one word would be Fluid like, UFC is a bit coarse for me. I think both are very respectable sports, but one has nothing to do with the other in my opinion..

The two have no business being compared. Professional boxing is about 100 years old, the UFC is about 15, with only about the last 9-10 being sanctioned as a professional sport. Boxing is established, the UFC is still making its mark.

I've been an amateur boxer and did about a year of professional MMA. Both are unique and require different skillsets. The training is different, the mindset is different, the conditioning is different, the style of competition is different. MMA athletes train in boxing geared towards MMA. You can't do into an MMA bout with traditional boxing skills, because you'll lose and lose fast. Something as simple as a bob and weave can get you knocked out with a kick very quickly. I like to call the training "boxing for MMA", "wrestling for MMA" and "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for MMA". MMA is comparable to the decathalon. People who do that even are very good at all 10 events, but will never be the best at any of them. Does that mean one is any better than the other? Of course not.

Boxing does appear to be much "cleaner" and "crisper". The reason for this is because boxers spend all their time training to punch. It's the same way with amateur wrestling matches being that way in their bouts. MMA athletes cannot dedicate that kind of time to boxing becaus ethey'll neglect the dozen other aspects of the sport. Boxers are masters of their trade, which is punching and that style of competition. MMA athletes have to be jacks of all trades (meaning master of none). MMA tends to draw world class wrestlers, and grappling guys. There are few K-1 caliber kickboxers and virtually no top level boxers. I'm expecting to see this trend change over the next few years as MMA grows and becomes a very profitable business.
