I was with my dad once while he was driving on the highway. A guy slowly pulled into the lane beside us, just a little ahead and to the right and my dad thought he was going to make contact at 120 kph, so instinctively he jerked the wheel to the left and crossed into the left lane. Luckily there was no one in that lane but he didn't know that at the time, so he jerked the wheel to the right to avoid getting into a collision on the left, thinking that the guy cutting us off would have seen it and moved back into his lane. Well he didn't and we almost made contact with him again, so my dad kicked the breaks on a busy, congested highway in rush hour. Luckily, again, the vehicle behind us saw the driver ahead of him was freaking out and slowed down enough so when someone goes from 120kph to 70kph in about 2 seconds there isn't a collision.

The moral of the story is that there are some bad drivers on the road who don't deal with surprises well. If an old guy with coke bottle glasses in a truck is changing lanes and at the last second get surprised by seeing a motorcycle they might hit in their rear view mirror, they might make a bad choice of maneuvers over the next 1/2 second that could make them lose control of their vehicle.

I think I can understand someone wanting to race or otherwise push things to the limit, but you have to realize that unlike climbing the outside of the empire state building with no fall protection, other people could be injured when racing on public roads

THE CANADIAN PRESS

There's no problem with the way Ontario police are interpreting tough new street-racing legislation, and officers will continue to impound the vehicles of speeders despite mounting criticism, Ontario's top cop said yesterday.

Speed-related highway fatalities are down some 42 per cent this year, and much of that has to do with the new laws enacted last spring, Ontario Provincial Police commissioner Julian Fantino said.

two interesting questions arise form this give the last holiday death totals
1 - who is mounting such credible criticism that Julian Fantino felt a need to respond?
2 - where did he get those number given some of the news reports of deaths?

Been there done that. Photo radar does not prove who drives the vehicle. And because of that, the former Ontario government had to drop the demerit points-system for driver's who sped through a photo radar trap. So if you're a person driving a $60,000 corvette, and you go through one of those photo radar traps, and it takes your photo, you just keep speeding, who's gonna pull you over? nobody. And further up the road, you get into a multi-vehicle crash. It doesn't save lives, it's only purpose was to make money for the former NDP government of Ontario while they were in power.

Proof of who was driving is not a factor.
Would you not call in a hit and run that you witness because you didn't get a good look at the guy/girl behind the wheel?
Get the tag#.
Make the call.
The owner of the vehicle can be held responsible for the actions of the driver. The person driving the day they run a photo radar might not pay, but you can be sure the fine is tacked on to the cost of the owner's next licence renewal if it goes unpaid. If the plate is on your name, know the person you lend the keys too. Have a look at your insurance policy as well. Not all coverage extends to people you lend it to, and you can be held liable for damage they do.
I won't debate the point about it being a cash cow, though. I happen to agree.

street racing like this is only gonna get worse. i've noticed that lots of kids my age have no respect for others or the law. they are also heavily modifying their cars now, in an effort to out speed their opponents, and the law. sure some people claim to do it just to make it look good, some of them may be true, but there's no need for an extra 200 horsepower under the hood and a whopping 10 inch diameter exhaust pipe to go down a street at 50 mph. besides that, why would people waste 80 grand on engine upgrades, NOS, and body kits on a car unless they were trying to make a street racer? this is why i'm devoting the next 20 or so years of my life to being a cop. if you've played need for speed : most wanted or carbon, you know of the cop called "cross" who tries to stop you by any means necessary. he drives a street racing modified corvette with the police stripes. that, essentially will be me on the highways. i will drive a modified cop car ( pending permission from the chief), and work mainly on erradicating highway street racing and street racing in general.

ah yes the more things change the more they stay the same, ironicly so has the way in which society has dealt with such issues.
