any film that can feature bob newhart, alan arkin, anthony perkins AND art garfunkel really pushes the envelope. it took as many risks as heller did and you have to admire that.

I loved loved LOVED what Gary Oldman did to the character--he still remains one of my all-time favorite actors to this day (can't wait to see him in the upcoming "Harry Potter" movie, although his character dies, Boo-hoo!)-- and I LOVED the music, costumes and supporting cast, but trying to convince an audience that both Ryder AND Keanu Reeves were English? PUHLEEZ. I heard better accents in that Robin Hood movie with Kevin Costner. Those two made me CRINGE. I think different actors should have been used and then it would have been much better.

Stephen King's 'Dark Tower' series
I'd love to see that, too.
I loved loved LOVED what Gary Oldman did to the character- Dracula
Oh yeah.. never wanted to be undead MORE in my life. *sigh*
I find that many times Science-fiction books make for decent movies, so I'm gonna suggest Darwin's Radio by Greg Bear (and the rest of the "series", too even though I haven't had a chance to read it's sequels yet).
Get Shorty novel by Elmore Leonard was one of the times it worked and one of my faves.

Ok I went to far...so sue me! It is just one of my favorites...because of Oldman. Plus it is just so darn romantic!
How about "To Kill a Mocking Bird"? Hard to imagine Aticus as anyone else then Gregory Peck...Great book to movie...even a "Classic" I might add

| Movies from books Posted: 6/27/2007 11:30:48 AM | I did think A Clockwork Orange was a great film and a great read! However, for the most part, I do not want to see a film based on a book. Dune was okay, but not nearly as good as the book(s). | |

| Movies from books Posted: 6/27/2007 12:47:14 PM | | I'd like to see the Silmarillion made into a three part movie with Peter Jackson back at the helm. Also would be cool to see the Riftwar Saga series of books by Raymond E. Feist made into movies. | |

| Movies from books Posted: 6/27/2007 1:40:17 PM | What about childhood or adolescent books?
I had about the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander (The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, the Castle of Llyr, Taran Wanderer and The High King). These were my favorite book series as a child. I know Disney made an animated version of The Black Cauldron a while back, but it was AWFUL. I'd like to see these done right, like the Chronicles of Narnia.
Also loved The Gammage Cup and Gone-Away Lake.

| Movies from books Posted: 6/27/2007 3:36:50 PM | I love books into movies as long as its done well.
For example.. Lord of the rings I think is phenominal... i love the story the books are so wordy and ultra descriptive that I had to force myself through a lot of it to find out the next interesting plot point whereas with the movies I am completely entranced.
The harry potter movies I think were poorly done because they try and jam pack everything into a short 2.5 hours movie and the books are very complex they also add a lot of slapstick for no apparent reason... in the last movie that was released they actually told you who was doing all the bad stuff from the very beginning.. there was no surprise whereas in the book it was all intrigue instead.. way better in the book.
I love fight club.. i think im going to go get the book and see which is better :)

| Movies from books Posted: 6/27/2007 4:19:55 PM | | I'd be curious what sort of film could be made out of 'The Master And Margherita'... I'd like to see those characters come to life... though it might have to an animated film to really do it justice. | |

| Movies from books Posted: 6/28/2007 11:09:28 AM | I have always wished they wouldnt screw up a book's idea by makeing a movie about it . I could see a "series" or maybe a mini serie's being made about some books like jame's axler's deathlands book's. There is suppost to be a movie made about the 4th book in the series. i hear it sucks but i have no clue having not seen it . But as far as what good "book's" have been turn into movie's that were equaly good and worth watching. hmmm belive it or not i watched hannible rising not to long ago. they did a pretty good job. altho every time i read a hannible book i always have anthony hopkins voice in my head lol.
other then that none i can think off. ssinatra

Any Judy Blume books. I am sure one is actually forthcoming, too... though which one it will be escapes me at the moment.

| Movies from books Posted: 6/29/2007 7:32:10 AM | Stephen King's "Rose Red" does it for me. It's a double dvd, so it means I can have a cute fellow over to watch it with me, and he's forced to come back and watch the 2nd dvd Nah, in all honesty, it's a great movie, though I never read the book. | |

| Movies from books Posted: 6/29/2007 8:22:26 AM | Battlefield Earth for me is a example where making it to a film failed.
Its a big book which i loved but a lot had to be taken out for the film and it didn't quite work for me. Two films where planned from the book but seeing how poorly the first one was put together im not surprised in got canceled.
Sometimes it works the other way round to, i didnt like the book Children of men because it was slow paced with not much action in it but i loved the film. True the story was changed a bit but the essence was still there. Of course the film had to be a fast pace with good action scenes because it has to entertain and get bums on seats and i feel the story was better told through the film.
I hope that my all time fave book (The Five People You Meet In Heaven) doesn't get made into a film as i don't think it can work, even though it would be nice for more people to hear/see the story as it is very beautiful.

Actually, it WAS made into a film--a TV film, back in 2004, starring John Voight, Ellen Burstyn and Jeff Daniels. I didn't watch it, so I can't tell you if it was any good or not. But as we all know, most films based on books are never as good as the book.

| Movies from books Posted: 6/29/2007 12:33:55 PM | I think it's a roll of the dice - depends who produces the movie and the way they approach it whether book to movie turns out okay. I love the Harry Potter movies though I read and loved the books first. I read Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park and Lost World. Both were fabulous reads! I loved the movie Jurassic Park despite being disappointed by the exclusion of the compys. Lost World movie just plain sucked IMO - wasn't even close to the amazingness of the book despite the inclusion of the compys and what a let down after the first movie, too. You just can't tell until you take the chance and watch the movie whether it will be close enough to a well-loved book for you to enjoy it. Two books I'd chance watching the movie of - if they were made into movies: The Gate To Women's Country by Sheri S. Tepper and Imajica by Clive Barker | |

I hadn't read the book then so if it did make it over here i probably wouldn't have notched it, i know it might be rubbish but im intrigued now to see it.

| Movies from books Posted: 7/1/2007 10:21:41 AM | | Books being made into movies don't bother me. As long as I watch the movie knowing that there will be lots of changes and it won't be just like the book, I'm not usually disappointed. I think people get disappointed, because they expect the movie to follow the book exactly and that never happens. | |

| Movies from books Posted: 7/2/2007 10:47:08 PM | | The color purple and beloved and the first harry potter book were made into movies that were almost and true to form as the books. When i saw the movie The Davinci (sp)Code it was like i was reading the book all over again. | |
|
| Movies from books Posted: 7/3/2007 8:56:38 AM | | Actually, I wish that a movie was NOT made from Dan Brown's Davinci Code. Hanks was all wrong for the role he was cast. The movie wasn't terrible, but it sure wasn't good. | |
