As I see it, the hurt will become deeper if time goes by with him thinking there is a romantic future. Then he will think he'd just been strung along, and will feel foolish which will lead to an even angrier response.
There is nothing wrong with being friends, as long as you two set and agree on the rules. Sex is not the be all, end all most people seem to think it is. Sex, at best is transitory. Friendship can last a lifetime.
