I currently give an interest in or being open to non-mainstream sexuality very high importance towards compatibility. That said, I think compatibility and how you feel about someone is not binary--I think most things exist as shades of grey rather than black and white. It is conceivable that I could find enough overall reward in a relationship with someone who is vanilla. And there are some aspects of my D/s interests that are not too far removed from romance. So I could consider a relationship with someone who was vanilla where there exists strong interpersonal and situational compatibility and an open mind towards BDSM. To respond about someone who was completely intolerant of anything BDSM is a tougher question; I would feel something was missing and the matter is relevant for personality traits I seek towards compatibility.
While I hope to find companionship and BDSM sexuality in the same person, I think companionship and required interpersonal compatibility to be a more fundamental matter.

Rough sex is concensual. It is just another variation and if it isn't for you then don't but also don't imply it is sometihg it isn't.
