The other good deal a lot of people forget about is "orange Wednesdays" been running for ages and you just text a code on your orange phone to get two seats for the price of one. V V Good deal.. But definately dont buy food at the cinema, total rip off, also booze at our local vue, is well over the top.

| Cinema's Posted: 7/1/2007 9:24:05 AM | if im going to the cinema its gotta be horror or comedys..not much atmosphere with thrillers or britflicks..wen i lived in oxford there was a sainsburys right next door so used to roll my food up in newspapers and drinks in pockets..times ive been to printworks in manchester and theres been 3 in if that!!i must admit i do like watching the adverts and the curtains opening and closing and the lights dimming..then again i do live a sheltered life..lol. gray | |

| Cinema's Posted: 7/1/2007 9:30:12 AM | it makes for an entertaining time out and there is more impact watching a film on the big screen.. as for your complaints .. nothing new there, thats what the cinema is about ... try a dvd next time.. it obviously doesnt suit everybody. | |

| Cinema's Posted: 7/1/2007 12:05:40 PM | What are you feelings regarding cinemas?
Too dark for me. I am afraid of the dark.
It has a scientific name... scared shitless of the dark i think..

| Cinema's Posted: 7/1/2007 1:00:23 PM | I've never been to a cinema with an apostrophe.
Coat..... door.....gone.

| Cinema's Posted: 7/1/2007 1:29:00 PM | Cinema's can't stop you bringing in your own food and drink, but you're made to feel cheap which is why i think noone does it much.
I like the cinema myself, i find other peoples reactions funny especially womens at a horror film, plus my local cinema has a bar

| Cinema's Posted: 7/2/2007 10:37:58 AM | Once upon a time I worked as a projectionist and it's the reason I've seen Titanic over 200 times
Here's some tips on having a good cinema experience.
Buy your tickets on line. The queues to the auto ticket machines are generally shorter.
Do not buy food from a cinema unless you are happy to be ripped off. Cinemas make the bulk of their profits from food sales because this is in fact their main business! Box office is a tiny portion of their profits and so the film is just the hook they use to sell candy!
Do not beleive cinemas who claim you can't take your own food. Simply state that you have special dietary requirements which they don't cater for. If they still won't agree, ask for the manager and make a scene!
The best seat for ultimate sound and picture is two-thirds back and centre. At this position the edges of the screen will fill enough of your peripheral vision for you to feel fully immersed in the action. The sound will also be in perfect sync as that is where the mixing desk is located in an audio post-production theatre.
Do not buy Premier seats in an Odeon cinema. They are anything but Premier. They hurt your butt and are in the worst position for viewing!
The very first screening of a new film will offer the cleanest picture. In theory it should be a brand new print, no dust or scratches. This is less relevant now with digital projectors.
Weekday sessions are less crowded but will have the least experienced staff running the projection room so you might get more problems with focus, etc. Conversely, Saturday night will be the busiest but they should have the most senior projectionist on duty.
Always report bad picture and sound immediately. Don't just sit there and tolerate it. If you can't explain exactly what the problem is, ask a staff member to come in and watch it but do not be fobbed off.
Length of ads and trailers. General rule of thumb is that the longer a film has been running, the shorter the ad reel will be. A brand new blockbuster can have up to 30 minutes before the feature in some cinemas.

| Cinema's Posted: 7/2/2007 10:50:25 AM | When I lived through Newcastle I used to go to the Tyneside cinema quite a bit (it's an independant one) as the multiplexes don't really cater to my tastes (the last "blockbuster" I saw was Men In Black when I went down to my sister's). I've hardly been since I moved & like a few others on here don't have anyone to go with anyway. At least with a DVD you can have food & drink without spending a fortune, you can pause the film if you need to go to the lav & you don't wind up having to put up with a moron talking over it about how they don't understand what's going on . Oh aye, & you can smoke if you want to. | |

| Cinema's Posted: 7/2/2007 11:01:45 AM | Huge fan of cinema going....
Best to catch the new films on the last showing of the night - less kids that way! (not so vital if it's an 18!)
Mine even put a showing on at 12.05 the morning of a films 1st day...
Can't recall what it was now - went out had a few beers - watched film - had a few more beers
For the folks that like going lots, get a "pass", if you can - I pay £11.99 a month and see as many films as I want!

Those were the days.
Any ladies fancy going with me?

| Cinema's Posted: 9/16/2007 11:04:23 PM | I've just won a years free cinema pass for me and a guest.
So even though getting in is free, I have found by the time I buy popcorn and drinks (large son in tow) I'm still spending nearly a tenner try that every weekend and sometimes twice, if there is a film my son must see, or he will die - *smirks*

| Cinema's Posted: 10/25/2007 9:49:11 AM | I just got back today from my first cinema outing for wow! must be around eighteen years!!!!! I think the last film before that was the one I went to see with my husband..... it starred Glen Close.... I just forget the title.... she had an affair with a married man and there was something about a boiling of a bunny!
anyway,
my point is that for me it was quite a different experience to the OP. As I now have my 'bus pass' I got in for the same price as my grand daughter.... we went to see STARDUST and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was able to buy my tickets in advance and so prepared a goody bag to take inside with us. Nibbles, drinks and such. I spent a total of £9 for the afternoon. I thought that was really good and included the bus.... saved on parking the car charges too! but.... the best part for me was the fact that they offered me a pair of infra red headphones..... wow! what an experience to hear the film without any interruptions from anyone else.... I just hope I didn't disturb the others with my laughter in the trailer for the new Disney film which just had me in stitches.... I will be taking her to see that too!!!! can't wait.

| Cinema's Posted: 10/25/2007 12:42:34 PM | we go all the time, it is expensive yes but it's still enjoyable and laughing en masse is great fun. I rarely get to see anything other than kid's films though - I always limit pop corn and drinks etc until the proper film starts as my boy tends to wriggle once all the edible stuff is gone. We go to Bath which is our local one and to be honest the price of the car park was the hardest thing to bear, bound to be a cheaper way to do it methinks...
Oh and I booked on line once for the Odeon and it was more expensive than getting them there, now that is appalling !!
|
| Cinema's Posted: 10/25/2007 1:14:49 PM | msg 33 buying tickets online is all well and good IF the automated ticket machines are working when you get to the cinema!
I used to work for a cinema and we used to get 2 free tickets a week, I haven't been since I left, it's just too expensive, and who wants to be squashed next to some numpty eating loudly, talking loudly and answering their mobile phone for 90minutes? Not me!
|
| Cinema's Posted: 10/25/2007 1:20:02 PM | | You should check out saturday/sunday mornings. At our local cinema(Vue) they do a matinee for children. Not always the latest films but it is 1.50 per child and the adult gets in free. You can even take in your own food aslong as it's not hot | |
|
| Cinema's Posted: 10/25/2007 1:31:23 PM | Don't buy food in the cinema, went this week had food at Nados first was a bit expensive but tastes nicer then use the good old orange wednesday ticket :).
ALso some cinemas do a family ticket or its cheaper before 4 pm not sure if thats the case during half term. As for being expensive its cheaper than spending an evening down the pub :)
Can't beat watching stuff like Lord of the rings on the big screen, somehow my crappy tv or pc just aint the same :)

| Cinema's Posted: 10/25/2007 5:00:18 PM | I love going to the cinema, always have done, I dont get so much these days and when I do manage to convince my parents to have the brood for a night I like to head of to the GFt and see whats on,
I dont go to the multiplexes as i think most of the films on general release lack plot, style and most certainly beauty, the last film I saw was the Witnesses with Emmanuelle Beart, it was great, and is now being re-run so i may go watch it again, I am dying to see Salvatore, this is life, as I am a fan of Italian cinema in particular.
|
| Cinema's Posted: 10/25/2007 5:04:14 PM | | I like to go if it's something i really want to watch or if i want to treat the kids, because it's just not the same on a DVD! Most of the time i'll just rent something from my cable menu and get some snacks and a bottle of wine, which is more of a regular thing really because i love movies and i cannot afford to go the cinema every time something new comes out that i wanna see. | |
|
| Cinema's Posted: 10/25/2007 5:12:40 PM | ^^^Plus i get really fidgety and impatient at the cinema and after about an hour i always start making excuses to go out like needing the loo (probably due to those MASSIVE cartons of coke!) or buying more snacks even though i feel full already, which means i end up spending a fortune and then missing half the film anyway! | |
