If you go up to some of the towns on the north coast of California, you will swear that hippies are still alive and well today
this poster is correct. this is where the hippies are....humboldt county, ca. no doubt about it. tie dye, hippy vans, patchouli oil etc.

Martha Stewart was planning on moving (buying a forth or seventh home) there but the outlaw/underground type of residents must have scared her off. Her kind wouldn't be too shabby of a client. It's a beautiful place for anyone in CA reading complete with open ocean, a weird kind of rivermouth boat harbor, surfing, nude (and regular) beach, wild life, hiking at roads' end, and a quaint little town section. Bring your own bong though.

aye you still get them stoatin about in edinburgh as well, not many now though.
i was just a bairn when the hippies were at their height and i remember when the skinhead movement started in the late 60's early 70's. the hippies used to get booted up and down the street because no one in the schemes really liked them.
peace, love and harmony lol
maybe in the next world (to use an expression from morrissey)

| are you glad the hippies have gone? Posted: 1/14/2012 5:46:44 PM | lets not judge them either. a lot of the hippys here in this town are working and educated with university degrees. | |
|
| are you glad the hippies have gone? Posted: 1/20/2012 10:12:41 PM | I don't really care about the hippies, I don't hate them.. but I just don't care for them or their views... they supported feminism and equality and helped the feminists kill Chivalry.
Now all because of that, women today have turned into weirdos who want to be treated like men. And now it's hard for a gentleman these days to find love.

If you go up to some of the towns on the north coast of California, you will swear that hippies are still alive and well today. What's most interesting to me about the hippies is their connection with the beat movement, which was already going strong by the early-to-mid 1950's, and a lot of it was involved with art, especially literature and music.
i've known about humboldt county for quite some time... eureka! an old online friend of mine (way back in the 80's) would talk about his late night (early a.m.) public radio show, & would tell me about his trips to the pond in the woods, especially on 4/20. i should have kept in touch with him..

oh, i'm well aware of the beauty of the redwood are, even tho i've never been there. that's a dream of mine...going & camping in the woods there. (i doubt i could afford to live in the area tho.)

The same guy that took every drug available in the 60s, is the one b1tching about preservatives in potato chips today..

| are you glad the hippies have gone? Posted: 1/22/2012 9:46:15 PM | Hippies-gone? Go to Woodstock, NY...lol! And, if you don't like "Hippies", how about "Punks", "Deadheads", & of course, "Goths". Hey in place of the Hippies, now you've got "Gangs". Yup, say what you will about the flower children...I'd rather someone give me, a flower, than slit my throat for my wallet. | |

Posted: 1/23/2012 10:33:03 AM | (re. redwoods) well my income is pretty low, so it would have to be a cheap place to live, compared to not just california but the whole u.s.... it would be really hard to move so far, even though i would probably love it there. heck, it's even hard to move an hour or two. too many belongings, not sure where to go, etc etc...
yes, the punks/goths etc - to me all the counter-cultures are just the next step in progression of the "hippie" lifestyle. not sure if gangs could be related to gangsters..

| are you glad the hippies have gone? Posted: 1/23/2012 12:42:43 PM | Hippies, yuppies, punks...many branches
Huppies, Puppies, Yippies, Pippies, PHippies, PHuppies, PYippies...the list goes on. Mods, Skas, Skmods and none are Joe Shmose.
I prefer to take some stance over no stance...as long as you have a choice you may as well have a preference.

| are you glad the hippies have gone? Posted: 1/23/2012 8:37:35 PM | The original hippies are still around, dying off slow. From what I can tell, most went into education, thats why you see our education system in the poor shape it is in. They still think they are bettering society and the world, while they made some positive changes, the majority are moronic. IMO of course. | |

| are you glad the hippies have gone? Posted: 1/23/2012 10:44:26 PM | Many of the proffesors at our local university HSU are hippies. I live near that town and it is totally hippie. you can smell pot as you walk the streets and the cops do nothing. but they cause no harm.
to the lady who would like to possibly move here... there are beautiful places without hippies here... gorgeous ocean view or in the mountains. You may e mail me here on POF if you want any info. I want to move so I would love to here how much rents are in your area. I just want a change. actually I moved away twice but came back because of the simple laid back lifestyle and the beauty. hippies dont bother me.

Hippies aren't dead. Well, the original ones may be dying off, but I happen to know a few hippies, and I live in New York.
Anyway, I wouldn't be glad if any particular group was gone (except probably the KKK). Goths, Hippies, Yuppies. Even if I don't get them. They add color to the world. Especially hippies. I'm not a hippie myself, but every one I've known has been interesting.
