Its still necessary..All the real estate in this solar system is ours, all we need to do is get there.

Into Art, I disagree with you. Space does offer something for the near future. There is Helium 3 on the moon and also in the Jovian system. (Jupiters atmosphere and moons) Helium 3 could and would greatly help with our energy problems. Of course we need to start mining and put new technology into place before reaping the rewards.

"As it stands, there is no practical way to obtain resources from space (and only metals are available, no fuel, water, food, etc.)"

Engineering tends to develop solutions as problems become apparent, and as to the unavailability of water, well comets and europa come to mind. We know for a fact that there is water ice present in comets and there is a HUGE amount of evidence for water even possibly in liquid form on europa. And as to fuel, that depends on what you need. methane on titan and hydrogen in the gas giants tend to prove that statement wrong.

"As for colonizing another planet, dream on! It may not prove possible even to get a small crew of astronauts to Mars (much less enough people to form a colony), and that is our NEAREST neighbor! In addition, the cost of shipping enough people, supplies, and other resources to Mars for a colony would bankrupt every nation on earth."

Um, our nearest neighbor is the moon. Been there done that, will be back again. Also getting to mars is pretty much an engineering problem. NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE about it. And as to the financials, well, frankly id love to see some actual proof on that, especially considering the fact the original space program paid huge dividends in the technology world.

"If, by some stretch of the imagination, we could colonize another planet, only an elite few would get to go. The rest of humanity would be vastly better served by using the same resources to improve living conditions here on earth. If we could develop the technology to terraform another planet, perhaps we could use it to rescue the environment here."

Only a few at first, but as the colony gets going and travel gets cheaper they will probably need more people. And what would really serve humanity is getting rid of the tyrannical/inept regimes that keep the vast majority of nations here broke and starving. Education wouldnt hurt either.
