| Got a fake diamond ring from fiance, he lied and said it was a 3 carat, 30,000 dollar ring! Posted: 7/9/2007 3:22:57 PM | what does being blonde have to do with anything? there are alot of brown haired women that are just as bad, if not worse when it comes to using men for money.
you did not say if your friend was blond or not.. maybe he felt she was too dumb to even have the ring checked out, and was trying to pull a fast one on her. maybe its not that he thinks she was dumb, he was trying to prove a point to her or just try to keep her around.. I imagine that would be difficult with a women of such high expectations, he feels the need to have to lie once and awhile...it is the thought that counts.. doesnt mean he doesnt want to marry her.. but it could mean that he thought she deserved his love instead of just his money. I see nothing wrong with it, except for the fact that he lied. but he was just telling her what she wanted to hear anyways. and if money is all she cares about, she only deserves a chunck of glass anyways.

I need insightful opinions and help, so that my dearest friend doesn't make the biggest mistake of her life! She is 39, tall and slender, beautiful face/figure/mind/heart, Master's Degree, single mom of a 4 year old boy.
When I first read this part, I immediately thought of a "trophy wife"......and deserved to be treated as such.....why else include her physical attributes?
She met her fiance on another dating site. He has passed 'embellishments' by her before, some 'little white lies', and they have worked through these past deceptions with strong communication skills
call them what you want, but the majority of posters feel that any lie is a lie...doesn't matter the size.
(he was a lawyer)
is the "was" a typo? If not, could be a big red flag......possible disbarment??
He gave her the ring, and she showed it off to all of her family, friends, clients, and colleagues
I'd be very interested in knowing where I can get my hands on a piece of glass that can pass so many eyes w/o being questioned.
....when she went to get it appraised
common practice, unless he provided the appraisal papers (most jewelers give them at time of purchase)
I feel outraged, disappointed, and humiliated for her
who really cares how you feel for her? The question is, how does she feel?
Lastly, she picked out the ring from his "collection". What is it saying about her that she picked the 3 carat skating rink??
As one poster noted........both smell of fish.

Posted: 7/9/2007 5:13:56 PM | Wow,,, I didn't read the whole thread but just from reading the first page it's obvious what the men in here think. And I have to say I'm not surprised. Just because the story was about the cost of the ring doesn't mean that that's what the problem is here. C'mom guys,,, do you honestly think what he did was ok??? The point isn't the size of the ring and what it cost. The point is that he actually had someone put in a peice of glass and gave it to the woman he say's he loves and wants to marry. That is a slap in the face!!! He thinks nothing of her if he could do that. I swear.....men can be real jerks.

So, the guy gives her a ring because he wants to marry her, spend the rest of his life with her, loves her and its not good enough because it didn't cost as much as he said it did???
My god, this is incredible !!!
Really people, if someone loves you so much they want to be with you for the rest of their lives, does it matter what, if anything, they put on your finger. Shit, I'd be happy with a ring pull off a coke can if it meant I could have real happiness.
Sounds to me like the guy deserves better!!
And who in their right mind wants to see $30,000 wasted on one stupid piece of jewellery anyway - just think what great things you could do together with that !!

| Got a fake diamond ring from fiance, he lied and said it was a 3 carat, 30,000 dollar ring! Posted: 7/9/2007 5:30:50 PM | Sorry...I still feel that people are focussing too much on the little "embelishments" and white lies. How many of you have not been guilty of same...or just lie by omission? Especially when first getting to know someone....you certainly have limits on things you want to share or not. How many of you have selected the accurate salary bracket? (not referring to will tell later, or basically, NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!) LOL How many have said a "few pounds extra" and are really a few more than a few? LOL
I realize that this man (who CARES that he is or was a lawyer! there are MANY great lawyers in the world...not all are scum or ambulance chasers!) definitely made a fool of himself....but anyone who would consider a $30K ring, is thinking pretty foolishly, anyway. I think there are so many factors. Maybe SHE was the sort that hinted that bigger was better? Maybe he planned to replace it at some point and time? (Anyone seen the Everybody Loves Raymond episode like this? LOL) I don't even care about the fact that she had it appraised, as I did initially...now that others have pointed out reasons for this. (I would NEVER have a $30K piece of jewelry!!)
I think it is sad that the OP thinks this is what makes her friend DOOMED from the get go! Wow...wish the only issues I ever had in relationships were that my beau pulled a fast one on the value of my ring!

| Got a fake diamond ring from fiance, he lied and said it was a 3 carat, 30,000 dollar ring! Posted: 7/9/2007 5:56:55 PM | I understand your concern OP:
He bragged about what a great thing he was buying for his fiancee, and then
He lied about what he was bragging about! How stupid.
I anticipate she can only see more of this behavior, and more likely much worse, after they getting married.
Please show her this thread, the good & bad, and let her make her own decision. That way you've done all you could to help her and she has been forewarned.

The ring is worth 30 grand.. need to have insurance on it.. DUH that is more than why got it appraised??? Don't you think? Hell I have never had a ring worth that much not even close so yep I would want to insure it. Companies will not insure without proof of worth...
He lied. What else does he continue to lie about. Need trust...

Actually, from what you've said, you're really bolstering the woman's case. He gave her a rign, which he said cost X amount of dollars; thus, the ring was a symbol of his feelings for the woman. the ring was fake.!! Get it? Forget the price!!! Price is NOT the point! TRUTH is the point!! He lacks in that department.
"...does it matter what, if anything, they put on your finger. ..I'd be happy with a ring pull off a coke can if it meant I could have real happiness."
EXACTLY!!! IF it was given as a symbol of TRUE feelings, and not as a trophy to show how much you earn. ("Look what I can buy for my girl!!") Get it?

Posted: 7/9/2007 10:08:59 PM | | Your friend, as well as you, seem to take a lot of stock in material items. It's great that she has all these accomplishments and it's great that you are looking out for her but what does it really matter? You can't take it with you when you go and I don't know about you but I've never seen a hearse with a luggage rack on the back. I should know, I was a mortician for six years. You say six years ago is when he swapped it out? So what. Maybe he was trying to pass the bar at the time, something happened in HIS family, he fell on hard times, whatever. The point is that maybe, just maybe, he's a little bit prideful (like most men) and in the same token, ashamed. It's the principal of the thing. He's willing to risk humiliation of his self kept 'little secret' to have the courage to ask this woman to marry him. Throw the guy a bone for crying out loud! It's the thought behind the action that carries more weight than the weight of a ring. If this friend of yours had any morals, she'd put more stock in the appraisal of the relationship rather than the ring.

Did you not read the OP?!?!?!?!? Or are you just being deliberately obtuse or, even worse, trolling?
Just to recap, for those of you who OBVIOUSLY did not read the OP; ***The guy has a history of "embellishments" (that's a nice word for "lying")
It's not about price; It's about being truthful.
Two words: Reading comprehension
'nuff said. | |

| Got a fake diamond ring from fiance, he lied and said it was a 3 carat, 30,000 dollar ring! Posted: 7/9/2007 10:35:55 PM | I'd get rid of this guy yesterday.
NOT because it's a much cheaper ring. Frankly there is NO WAY I'd wear a $30,000 piece of jewlery. Not a chance ever. Well...ok maybe Id wear it ONCE, and get some gorgeous photos of me wearing it....laying on a big pile of cash and wearing a mink. But never again after that!!
I WOULD dump him for being borderline mentally retarded and bull$shitting me about the ring, also for seriously thinking I would NOT ever discover his lie. AND.....simply adding THIS lie onto the pack of other lies he's already told me. (didnt you say he's lied before???)
ABSOLUTELY I would get the ring appraised. If Im gonna be walking around wearing a stupid ass piece of jelwery that can get me killed, or de-digited, when theives target me. You bet your arse I'm gonna know whats going on and of course have it insured adequately. Naaaa I dont believe in keeping all this a big "secret" due to the "gift" factor. BS!!! If I'm walking around with a sign on my head saying "HEY....come and mug me, cut off my finger and steal my ring!!" Well then, I'm going to fully understand what the heck Im doing all that for.
so he's a dope if he thinks I would never have questions or want to be involved in the decision making process on on an object that will be putting my life in danger. Also....finance right??? LIke in "getting married"?? Well....as a SPOUSE I will be involved in all financial matters, including all types of insurance. So if he's got a noodle in his noggin...he knows theres a decent chance he's gonna die eventually and EVENTUALLY I will be reviewing all paperwork and see that its worthless.
so yep...........................Id dump him for being a dumbell.

Posted: 7/9/2007 10:42:08 PM | | He's obviously dumb because most women run to the store to appraise the diamond, but if your friend is not able to see and call an obvious lie on something so fundamental to the relationship then she is even dumber than him and gets what she deserves. But then what part of the diamond is your friend offended by, that it wasn't valuable, because then she is a gold digger. Is it not possible that he might replace it when he is sure of her? A commitment is a commitment regardless of how much collateral he gives, no?

Well, if that's the case, then she has given him reason not to trust her. Why else would he construct the ruse?
The relationship is doomed no matter what the real story is.

Maybe she just meant that he no longer practices law. That still makes him a lawyer; but lots of lawyers don't practice law. Heck, trust me; about half of all lawyers (especially transactional lawyers) are trying to get to a point in their life when they can stop practicing law.
So it's possible that he is very fulfilled, but not as financially secure as he use to be.
But then again, he could have gotten disbarred. And if that's the case, it must have been something very serious. They don't disbar people for no reason and it's really hard to get disbarred (unless it's a highly publicized thing like the Duke rape case D.A. thing).

Posted: 7/10/2007 12:44:47 PM | Who honestly cares if the diamonds are real if the sentiment in giving the ring was real. I'm always surprised by the value people place on the price tag over the emotional gesture being expressed in the giving.
If your "friend" cares then she should talk to her finace about it... if she doesn't care then it isn't our place to decide for her how to react to his gift.

| Got a fake diamond ring from fiance, he lied and said it was a 3 carat, 30,000 dollar ring! Posted: 7/10/2007 3:30:46 PM | I was married to a compulsive liar. I knew he told me a few lies before hand, but I dismissed them, thinking he screwed up and was sorry (story of my life). The lies only got worse. He bought me 1/4 carat earrings for our first Christmas. A few years later, took my 1/2 carat CZ earrings and brought them back to the jeweler that sold him the 1/4 carats, saying they weren't real and demanding a refund. Needless to say, the store laughed at him and b/c I went to school with the owners daughter, found out about it. Needless to say, he hocked my 1/2 carat CZ for money. And embarrassed me.
Tell your friend to run and run fast. It's not worth it, especially when she has a 4 y/o that she is involving!
