taal, I am impressed w/ your knowledge on a subect that skipped my generation for making a statement. "I'm always so insulted by people who don't understand why tattoos are beautiful." Try not to be insulted, but IMO not all tattoos are beautiful ...and too many, no matter how well done, can turn somebody's body into a freak show. I realize that some people aspire to be one, and it's their right.
You are young yet ...w/ an imagination poised well enough for your life yet lived, but as time and gravity come to bear, that tattoo or facial piercing will lose it's eternal beauty. Someone mentioned "tasteful" and both forms of body art can be, but the 'human canvas' might best be taken into consideration. It's far easier to restore a painting on canvas to it's original inspiration, but art on one's body?
I don't think so. thanks :D I see where you're coming from with that, and I appreciate that you can recognise that it is at least their right to be as freaky as they so choose. I think I have the opinions I do because I have seen some truly epic tattoos - many artists aren't up to par with the ones that create the ink I've seen, which makes people think that tattoos all look wrong. My best friend has had some AMAZING artwork done around the world - he's almost completely wrapped in it, but the reason it looks good is because he's EXCEPTIONALLY picky about his artists. That's the best advice I could give to somebody getting large-scale, is to find an artist you truly love and then go to them, whether they be across the street or across the country. If I found and artist in Toronto whose work made me catch my breath and go all starry-eyed, I'd budget for a trip to Toronto. And you'd be surprised the level of touchups that can be done ;)

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/7/2007 10:11:58 PM | Okay here goes, Im pretty much the ''worst nightmare'' to the majority of you,
Im 18 years old and have had an interest for piercings for a very longtime, It started when i saw some random womans tongue piercing from the age of around 8.
I've been getting needle piercings [other than ears] from the age or 12/13,
Ive had many piercings - currently i have 37, used to have plenty others, To me, the piercings are what make me who i am, i dont hide behind them, they are an extention to the looks i want, What you have to remember is if your not happy with yourself how can you expect other people to be happy with you... I think my piercings are a confidence thing, it wasn't at the time, but without them now i would feel really naked lol!
as for the tattoos.. yes im heavily tattooed also, i think they're really beautiful, i have to bottom half sleeves, chest/shoulders, lower back, neck, thigh, shin and side shin tattooed and i love them, i have sooo many more in store, They express past events, feelings, i think every tattoo should have a memory, a reason...
I look at it like this, you live once, give it deep thought - if you still want it in a year or so, do it, Piercings and tattoos are addictive, people tell me i have to many and they're horrible, i dont look in the mirror and see piercings, i look in the mirror and see myself.
And im totally happy with that.
And for the ones who find me 'freaky' or just think i look lame...
**** you all, because i love who i am. And im going to continue what i like doing - modifying myself... [ruining myself! so some might say]
That is all.

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/7/2007 10:25:08 PM | hehe - it just irratates me how girls with piercings and tattoos get treated really bad - this makes us more defensive... if people weren't so shallow girls wont feel the need to 'watch they're backs' its the same for guys too, when someone does something that a whole group doesn't agree with, you have to toughen up! and stand up for yourself just to be who you are!
Im okay with people who dislike tattoos and piercings, but its the little insults like ''you look like a cheese grater''' or '' what happens if i get a magnet'' and random stuff like that.
These days people dont care about other peoples feelings, your judged purely on what you look like, and if they don't like what you see your screwed.
all i can say if, pierced/ tattooed or not pierced or tattooed... Everyone is still human! and should be treated like one...
But hey! thats life - Everyones looking for acceptance!
Amen :P x | |

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/7/2007 11:31:24 PM | hehe i know where your coming from! Just sometimes its nice to stand up for yourself against the negative opinions! I'm not going to turn all bitter about it, i feel its each to their own! :)
I believe people should do what they want to, with or without approval. Its your body at the end of the day! You deal with the consequences!

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/7/2007 11:35:09 PM | i like piercings too, i have a few that i think i've done in a somewhat classy manner but i also thought about the fact i'd like a career and not have a million holes in my face when i decide to take them out. it's not like you're going to keep them until you're 70, i personally think having 40 piercings on your face is a bit much.
to each their own though.

Although I'd never get nearly that many on my face (although since catching up on modblog this week, I'm going to have a lot more by the end of the month :D), it's great that you wear it so openly - personally, I'd be the type to get a bunch of little 2 mm beads for a more subtle effect, but to each their own.

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/8/2007 1:25:20 AM | [quote} Okay maybe not to sexy when your 60!
when you get to 60 you should be more worried about bein able to wipe your own arse and feed yourself rather than what your tattoos look like.
i also think girls with tattoos are great

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/8/2007 1:49:54 AM | Personally I'm more into the tattoos than the piercings, but they're both sexy as hell as long as they aren't a bunch of horrible art and the colors scheme is right with them... I can't think of anything sexier than a girl with a nice sleeve or a nice large side piece. My advice though is get something that is going to mean something to you for your entire life, never get anyone's name on you other than a family member by birth. Avoid the flash art crap that everyone has. If you can't read the language it's written in, don't get it. When you finally do start getting your art make sure it's with someone who is reputable and has been around for a while, and listen to the recomendations about the care and what not. | |

If you can't read the language it's written in, don't get it. By far the best advice of all time Kanji has got to be the worst trend on North Americans - what exactly is so insulting about the language you speak that's it's not worthy of a spot on your body? I can't count the number of times people get mistranslations, too... my tattooist told me of one person who wanted "mysterious" only to find out months later when a Chinese person asked her, "Why do you have 'strange' tattooed on your shoulder?"
|
| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/8/2007 6:03:33 AM | Even when I was 18, tattoos on girls was a turn-off. If I want art, I'll go to the museum and look at art or buy a book. Piercings don't bother me. Your nose piercing is cute. Belly buttons are really cute when pierced.
The whole tattoo & piercing thing really took hold when folks got a chance to see the tribal skin art and piercings from aboriginees and different tribes out of Africa. Well some of these tribes also split their lips, stretch their lips and earlobes and other things. Do you plan on doing that too? Hey, it's tribal!
P.S. Love your Betty Page haircut! She was such a lovely woman in her day.

Well, I agree that this trend has gone a bit far....but I respect the choices of those who have them. I for one, have "son" and "daughter" in chinese symbols...I wanted something to represent FOUR kids without using names, or having a total sleeve just of them, alone. LOL So instead, I have the symbols on the back of my neck...and no...I cannot read chinese...but I also researched it, went to a person of chinese descent who I trusted...and ascertained it was correct! ;)
Re someone 60 with tats and such....obviously, unless you have a lot of laser work, EVERYONE tatted today, will eventually be someone with tats at 60. Because tats are getting less and less slack NOW...when everyone is 60, it will be the same...less shocking, as well. And when I am so old that I have to worry about my arse being wiped...well...it will give them something else to focus on! ;) LOL

Heh, I met a gothy girl in a tattoo/piercing parlour once who was getting her chinese symbol inked over. Reason? She'd gone through the book and picked a symbol she thought was labelled 'evil', but in fact the label was above the symbol, and she'd picked 'butterfly'!

SingleMingle43: I just got my first of many Tattoos and I must say, it does not hurt near as much as people think.
It all depends. The outlining [black ink] hurts the most. WHERE you have it placed can make a difference in the pain factor also such as more fleshy areas hurt less. Also, something no one EVER considers.... what if you are allergic to the ink? Then it's VERY painful.
Yes tattoos rock and I have no problem with women having them.its a personal thing.we get inked for many reasons. My tattoos are witness tattoos.they proclaim Jesus.
Oh Jesus Christ. Have you learned nothing from that man? It's in the walk. You can proclaim the man all you want but at the end of the day, do you think he's looking at your Tats going, "Way to go John!!!" No, he's not. He never wanted proclamation. He was a humble, quiet, intelligent, discreet man. Tats are one thing but tats proclaiming Jesus for the sake of proclaiming Jesus? Totally defeats the purpose of why he ever existed.

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/8/2007 12:58:02 PM | I don't mind a woman with tattoos or piercings, but I myself could never do much more than earrings. The only thing I'm not sure about is kissing a woman with pierced lips (among besides things ;)
An ex co-worker of mine got a tattoo before he left. Apparently, he thought he made him look "hard", but the fact is, he wasn't hard, but instead a flabby, lazy kid who thought he could get more girls by having one. I personally think that is the dumbest reason to ever get a tattoo, especially how he asked everyone if it "hurt" before he actually did it... LOL

Not to mention, most places of worship strongly support any method of testimonial and spreading that word!

With anything you get what you pay for Knowledge and planning get the best results
Allow for contingencies
Your 18 ........start where you can cover them COMFORTABLY. What you plan to do for a living now ...might bore you or cause you physical distress. You might find something that fuels a fire in you in a few years that requires some discretion with your body art. As you develope your professional life expand your artwork to suit
Make sure that your artist plans a good seguey from one ink to another. I think that ruins the effect of some incredible artwork.

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/9/2007 10:30:33 AM | I am a fan of both tattoos and piercings. Obviously I have my preferences but... here goes.
I kinda feel "less is more" when it comes to these things. I like them, but I always think they look better when you don't have tons of it everywhere as well. A tattoo on the arm might just be awesome, but when you surround it with a ton of other ink it merely becomes 'okay" Same with piercings, a few in the ear mine look cool, but when your entire ear becomes nothing but metal, my affection for those piercings die out.
One thing I am personally big against is too much metal on the face. 1-3 is the max I'd say, although it depends. One piercing I simply cannot stand however is the "metal mole" the one where the stud is near the corner of the upper lip. (omfg I hate that looks bad) course I don't like real moles their either sooo. /shrug
But this is all just my humble opinion.... I do like tats and piercings though... I just like when people show a little restraint and strategic placement of them.

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/9/2007 10:41:27 AM | my 2 cents: it's YOUR body. not mine, not your partners, not your parents. My mom freaked out when i got my second, and was too scared to tell her it was actually my second. eventually she found out about my arm band, and was like, "whatever". She's from the "old school" where girls only have one set of ear piercings, and that's it. I have 11 piercings left of my 21, and I'm sorry some of them are gone, others not so sorry. My piercings and tats are mine, and make me ME. Some of them were to reclaim my life and my body, others just because. check out bmezine dot com if you want more info.... | |

I don't think the OP is looking for if its "right or wrong" she wants wants our views on how they look and how they make us think :D

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/14/2007 5:15:56 PM | haha.. you can get diseases from freakin mosquitoes! that's not usually 1 of the things we worry about, nice try! i like em, and it's def. a difference of opinion. some guys like em, some don't. i have 6 tats n 9 piercings, and if ppl aren't attracted to me because of it.. o well!

| Tattoos and Piercings Posted: 8/14/2007 6:28:39 PM | I always find it so interesting to see how many ignorant people there are when it comes to the body modification culture.
First off diseases.. lol HAH unless you go to a really run down, dirty place, the chances of this happening are VERY slim... First off.. a reputable shop will have an autoclave to clean their jewellery (a machine that uses pressure and high heat to kill off bacteria and viruses)I've had many.. many piercings done at professional shops and these piercers pride themselves on their safe handling techniques (avoiding cross contamination).. if you watch the piercers, many of them will change their gloves for every new thing they touch (I'm sure you can't say the same when you go to the doctors office) For the most part I find tattoo/piercing shops to be a lot cleaner than a walk in clinic or even your family doctors office.
I believe many people need to open their eyes and learn more about the body mod culture.. a lot has changed since you were young (for the elders here ) body piercers and tattooists aren't simply low life uneducated hooligans who get a thrill out of altering a persons body, but if you opened your eyes you'd realize that many of them are talented artists.. and for the body piercers many of them have been trained in bloodborne pathogens, and human anatomy in order to provide their service safely.
If you do go to a good shop.. you'll also find that the piercers will use PROPER jewellery.. not that shit you can pick up in the supermarket that girls stick in their ears with the butterfly backs.. but high quality steel/titanium- the same stuff doctors use for surgical implants.
Anyway.. I have 10 piercers.. including a piercing on the back of my neck.. you can avoid me all you want, simply for the fact that I may look different than yourselves, but I can assure you, you're the ones missing out on an awesome chick.
