The question is what are the standards and who set them up?
Is it the secret men's society, or the society of trying to get accepted?
You said it "very confident individual" does it matter to you then if you are perceived as average or BBW?
As long as you have a picture that shows all of you; having nothing to hide, let the reviewer of your profile make their own conclusion based on the society they belong to.

I agree, at 5'10" a size 14 seems perfect. I, too, have apparently misunderstood the whole 'average, few extra, etc' catagories. I placed myself as average, because that seems appropriate, but recently a man complained that I misled him. He found me to be "a little on the skinny side" lol. I don't see myself as "skinny" or "thin" - those words equal "unhealthy" to me....so, hell, I dunno.
At 5'4" and a size 7, I think that's very proportional and healthy.

Oy. I really wish someone would write Dating for Dummies.

i am quite confused on this as well especially because i'm working on myself and am working out with a personal trainer so if i put average, the person will see me a few extra pounds because my change is happening...but if i put a few extra pounds, when i start dropping weight it makes it as if it's a lie so isn't there an option like....under construction or in progress????

I love it when the ladies trot out this line to make them feel better about themselves.

Thus, a woman’s dress size 7 today would have corresponded to a size 11 a generation ago, a phenomenon that is referred to euphemistically as vanity sizing.
Presumably, as America became more rotund over the years the industry adapted, to impress upon the buyers the good feeling that they were as lightweight as ever. Problem is, with vanity dimensioning women’s sizes have largely ceased to be meaningful, at least in the U.S., inasmuch as the numbers now change substantially not only from store to store, but also across brands sold at any one store. Interestingly, no comparable vanity sizes have developed for men in the U.S., despite that they too have increased in bulge, and this is because men’s sizes were regulated early on by the government, to satisfy the need for uniform men’s sizes in the military.

The Hollywood Movie Museum has fifteen of Marilyn Monroe's dresses, which range, according to the caretaker, from sizes 4 to 8 by today's sizes. The white dress she wore in "The Seven Year Itch" is a size eight.

She wore a size 14 when she was pregnant and filming "some like it hot". That would probably correspond to a size 8 by today's standards.

Well I think a few extra pounds should only refer to a Brit needing some money.

What do I think when I see...? "Could be cute or sexy - any pix?"
Would I say this is the catagory for you? - "No."
Does that answer your question?
Of-course your choices are somewhat illustrative of your attitude and self-perception.

When I read 'A few extra pounds' I quickly close the posting and move on. There's nothing I desire less, except maybe root canal without anesthetic, than a fat woman. I would put a gun to my head before I would go through life with a woman that should be eating out of a feed sack! Ladies, put down the chips and start jogging!

It seems a few extra pounds is the PC way to state that the person is a minimum of 20 pounds over wieght, and oftfen much much more.

The answer is: we are all here at POF and they did not set up any specific standards--the determination and interpretation of "a few pounds extra" is left up to each individual either to apply to themselves or others. If anybody has a different answer that is as accurate, let's hear it.

How very judgmental of you, but then that is your right. The average American male is 5'9" and weighs 190 pounds, which is probably at least 20 pounds overweight by the health charts. Your profile says you are 5'9" and by your picture you appear to be "a few pounds extra" by either health standards or average American male standards. I would guess you are over 190 and your face appears to be a little "full".

Since you are here to date, congratulations! You have managed to narrow down the field of eligible women here at POF by eliminating any who might be interested in a 49 year old male, but who puts his put-down of them (although they might judge you as "a few pounds extra") in writing in the forums and it will appear by his name for awhile. Such wise candor is not often seen. Oh, and as a bonus you have quite likely eliminated a good deal of attractive and average or even athletic or thin women here who view your comments as that of a pig. But you know best. Been jogging lately?

"A few extra pounds" could mean about 10% over ideal weight, not much more than 15-17% or so.

Message 237: No, I don't weigh 190, about 10 lbs less, actually. If I narrow my choices down to zero with that comment, I could not care less, look at who I have to choose from in my zip code. Most have nothing to offer, the rest just not my type, so I'm here only for the forums. I don't like fat women, that's me, and that will never change.

so I'm here only for the forums

I'm sorry, I did check your profile and it said "dating". It's too bad that there is not a choice of "I'm only here for the forums", which is the only reason I am here, too. Yet even though I am not looking here I don't feel the need to put down women in any way. It doesn't cost me anything to either make or let a woman feel good about herself because making someone else small does not make me tallter. There's something delightful about each and every one, but you really can't hide when you're crippled inside (stole that last bit from John Lennon).

People, people, people...quite simply, it is a matter of preference. Everyone has preferences. Good or bad, right or wrong, that's how it is.

I think the issue may be how different people interpret the phrase "a few extra pounds." To me it means "a little bigger than average, but not especially overweight." That is, of course, just my opinion. I realize that the opinions will be as different and numerous as the posters in this thread.

Uh, I hate to point out the obvious, but you are a GUY! Do you sleep with stuffed animals or what? Yeah, I used 'Dating' because there is no choice that says 'No Fat Chicks'. Get it? The next step down is 'Activity Partner'...NO. Your doctor can prescribe Viagra if you are having problems...
Yes, I'm here only for the forums because the women in my area are a waste of my time, they want way too much and have nothing to offer in return, OK?? If a woman wants to feel good about herself, she has to earn it just like the men of this planet. I've got no time for female entitlement.

Well all I can say is thank goodness I don't live near you. There are ways of going about things you know. I have a preference for taller guys but I don't go around saying that all men under 6' are a waste of space and aren't worth the oxygen they take up. Just because someone isn't what you're looking for doesn't make them a bad person, in your case I'd call them lucky.

being "too critical" to yourself, more critical than others, do not pay off.

choose average.

if you are willing to take a weekend diet, maybe upgrade it to athletic!

OK, let's get this right. I don't like fat women, which is wrong according to you, and you don't like men under 6' tall, which rules out men who have no genetic control, despite the fact that they might have high IQs or good business sense. Let's take it a step further- a man cannot control his height, but a woman CAN control her weight. Am I missing something, besides your shallowness? I relate fat to apathy, is that so wrong? If I ever got fat, I will make the effort to slim down.

Does he even know what the word shallow means, wow, Desert, look it up, seems like every one was kind to the OP except you!!

Has anyone viewed deserrat's pics? He sure is not athletic, and if there was a category for a 'few extra pounds' perhaps he should click it. My opinion, since he is putting down any woman, and I said ANY who may have an extra pound or two.

And his comment, women have to earn it? LMFAO

I agree witht the other woman, thnak goodness I do not live in your area either!!

Bless you, how frustrating it must be. I may be shallow in choosing to only date guys of a cirtain stature, but at least I'm not alienating the rest of the population in the process. I don't see what their business acumen has to do with me finding them attractive or not? Are you suggesting I go into business with them?

Hell hath no furry like a woman scorned...plus a few guys here. What part of "I don't like fat women" don't you understand? I'm not fat myself, 33" waist and 184 lbs, and I'm 49, so no matter how much you try to "get even" by picking my photos apart, I'm not fat! If I didn't like women with green eyes would you hold the same contempt? Obesity is a big problem in the USA, and on POF...like it or not! Give me hell, then go look in the mirror, you bunch of fat a$$es!
