2. Slapping on cologne does not replace a bath/shower
3. If jeans turned up at the bottom and an old T are your 'finer duds', I don't want to see the rest of your wardrobe, or lack there of
4. Leave all the 'bling' that you've been given from other 'partners' at home
5. If a 'cat's got you tongue', make sure you're clothes didn't get attacked in the process
6. Wear a smile, it doesn't cost much and it says a lot

Absolutely! Went out with a judge once. He was the best-dressed sourpuss I ever met. No second date for that one.
Oh, and briefs, if you have the buns for 'em.

I am so glad you mentioned that. Some of us are allergic to colognes (like me) and it really makes for a rotten date once a migraine sets in, or even asthma kicks up depending on the scented product used.

| Over 45 Men, How should we dress? OK Ladies fire away! Posted: 7/10/2007 7:00:59 AM | I thought my boyfriend (50) was a little too casual our first date, but he wanted to show his personality and he did! We were meeting at an outdoor bar in Spring, so the cargo shorts were fine. The hippie shirt and hemp jewelry I thought a little much, considering we were going to see a play after (still I did say casual over the phone, so . . .) I encourage him to wear jeans and a little less tie-dye these days, saving the hippie wear for when he is playing with his band. My favorite look for him is these Seven brand jeans I found for a song, white tank under an open Calvin Klein shirt with the teeniest floral pattern. It looks 70’s enough to please him and he can wear his silver or hemp jewelry with it and look more David Cassidy than Stoner Dude, lol. He has great tats on both arms and he works out just enough for definition, so the sleeveless shirts are okay in moderation, depending on the event. What I can’t stand are the body builder types who wear tight pants and tanks EVERYwhere, leaving nothing to the imagination.
Every man has a certain style and I love when they embrace that. One of my long term boyfriends was a tweedy Alan Alda type, very L.L. Bean with suede patches on the elbow. Total opposite of the guy I date now but I always stop and look at a “nerd” decked out well, lol.
Things I hate: Baseball caps unless they are ON the field, socks with sandals or just Birks in general. Sandals on guys just doesn’t seem clean looking to me. Just my own peeve I guess. I’ve had to bite my tongue on that, being with the hippie musician, lol. But I figure he’s a grown man who owns his style. I’m sure some of my prissy work clothes turn him off as well.
As for guys not really sure what their style is, go to a nice clothing store and look for a female associate, one you feel comfortable with. Perhaps buy some things from her over time so she will become confident giving you advice. I suppose a gay male associate would work, too, but they may try to impose their style, depending on the individual (I have found for suits a male associate seems to have the best advice, gay or straight.) Either way, once you find someone you trust start to take chances with little things. I don’t suppose men will ever understand the female penchant for clothes, clothes, clothes, but if you have someone to help eliminate the guesswork, shopping can be fun!

Socks & sandals ... really I hate sandals on guys anyway. I don't mind flip-flops -- just make sure your feet are clean.
A muscle shirt if you've got a beer gut and/or scrawny arms.
Don't wear too much jewelry; i.e., necklaces, bracelets, etc. A nice watch will do just fine.
And, for God's sake, DON'T pull your pants up to your armpits. If you've got a fairly decent body, you should check out some of the low-rise men's jeans. I personally like the Lucky brand. They're a little pricey, but well worth it.

I think men should dress for their body type, personality, & of course, hygiene is de rigeur (?sp?)
My ex husband dressed like a typical Metro North RR worker- a slob in jeans & T's. My 1st bf after that wore baseball caps & looked cute in them (didn't hurt that he was 12 years younger than me ), Mossimo T's & jeans, sneakers or workboots & in the summer SANDALS, & shorts. He had great legs & a nice round tush, so......
My next LTR was a Nerdy Scientist who wore plaid shirts from an outlet store in Fishkill & jeans from Target, & sneakers 99% of the time. Sometimes he wore T's & shorts in the summer. He had nice legs & a round tush also, so....
In between the 2 LRS (each were about 3 years) I went out w/ some sloppy, clueless dressers & a few nice ones. It seems like most men are clueless w/o a woman dressing them. That is pathetic.
The true acid test is when you get them naked, though

If that is too much; then a sport jacket and dress shirt.
....and then...what Arugula just said; what a hoot!!

| Over 45 Men, How should we dress? OK Ladies fire away! Posted: 7/10/2007 9:13:22 AM | Hum..........women still wear panty hose? I seriously couldn't wear those things anymore.
I big turn off to me is men in sleeveless t shirts with skinnier arms than mine, or men wearing shorts when their legs are the tiniest part of their bodies.
Whether it is male or female, if you have an ugly spot best to cover it up unless it is 100F, then all bets are off.

| Over 45 Men, How should we dress? OK Ladies fire away! Posted: 7/10/2007 9:14:08 AM | | Looks like I'm with the majority of women here liking clean jeans and a shirt and all. As long as they're dressed for the occasion it's ok. If we were going to play putt-putt, I wouldn't expect them to dress the same way as going to a restaurant, the symphony, or something. I think most of us women here have responded saying that we find socks & sandals as a big turn off, I agree! Suits or sports jackets are ok, depending again on the event. And remember, only Magnum PI looks good in shorts too short,...better to keep the package protected so it doesn't unwrap on it's own. Gee, I was just thinkin' I'd probably have a heart attack if I went up to the Stampede, way too many cowboy hats, so little time... | |

| Over 45 Men, How should we dress? OK Ladies fire away! Posted: 7/10/2007 9:24:18 AM | lol...I guess I'm the only one who wears socks and sandals. When the weather is colder, and I want to walk down to check the mail...or just go out and throw a ball around for my dog, I just slip on a pair of flip flops over my socks and head out. I've always done that. It's also always horrified my girls. "Please Mom! Not while Joe, Johnny, Eddie (whoever) is here!"
I told them they should be glad I close the door to pee when their flavor of the week is here.

Posted: 7/10/2007 11:30:59 AM | Hahaha you tell em, theres nothing sexier than a man in the kitchen a man in nice pair of CLEAN jeans and a CLEAN tshirt. not too tight. I mean unless you still have the body ok. boxer or briefs hmmm good question. I think those jockeys are cool there like inbetween boxers and briefs. I use to like commando, but as I got older, not a very attractive look, and I worry about that zipper YIKES... unless your wearing buttondowns.Well thats another story.. hahaha

Now what would I be wearing that would make you say, Oh god I hope that's not him?
Pyjama bottoms in public, unless you're deathly ill and no one can go to the pharmacy to pick up your prescription for you........On second thought.....some drugstores still deliver. Sweat pants in public are another fashion faus pas.....unless your jogging or in a gym. A pair of bad-fitting faded jeans with HOLES in them or that show the infamous BUTT CRACK......eeewwwwww.....throw them in the garbage. A short-sleeved dress shirt..even worse if worn with a tie. Multiple gold chains on an exposed hairy chest....the epitomy of the "male gigilo" Rotten teeth or NO teeth.......FIX that!!.Not only for health reasons but " Do you know what you look like when you eat?"...........or how baaaaad your breath really is? And, last but not least...........dirty fingernails, oily, greasy hair and having the smell of a polecat. I've seen some that need an EXTREME MAKEOVER Muskoka

OT~ No athletic shoes. No pants with pleats, EVER. No cologne. Let her smell you, not a bottle of 'phew'!
Yes to jeans. Yes to stylish shoes w/out white socks. Yes to casual shirts, tucked in or out if you're trying to hide a belly.
Keep jewelry to a minimum.
Leave the cell phone in your car..... your Benz..... lol

| Over 45 Men, How should we dress? OK Ladies fire away! Posted: 7/10/2007 7:09:21 PM | If you're wearing something that feels comfortable to you, chances are you're going to look a lot better than if you try wearing something you've been told is the 'right thing' to wear.
I've read a few of the replies and I'm in the jeans & polo or nice tee-shirt group. Some guys definitely look good in the Don Johnson style of the fitted tee-shirt worn under a casual semi-fitted jacket with either khaki pants or denim (whatever's most comfortable for him). One of the male's physical features I'm attracted to is the neck, so I prefer there not be a lot of collar covering you up. It's hard to say which feature I notice first: sometimes the eyes & eye contact, then the smile that leads my gaze to the line of the jaw to the neck that leads to the shoulders....
As to what would make me hope it's not "you", that would be if you were wearing something suited for yard work or that should've seen the washer/dryer a few days ago; or, conversely, if I felt you were over-dressed (suit/tie); lots of jewelry; too much cologne.

| Over 45 Men, How should we dress? OK Ladies fire away! Posted: 7/10/2007 7:36:18 PM | How about a man's point of view? (Tough, you're getting it anyway)
I'm over 45 and couldn't give a rat's *ss about trying to "dress to impress"! I dress in the manner that pleases me......if you don't like it.....move on! If that's all you care about than I wouldn't want to be around you anyway. Too people people in this world try to pretend to be something or somebody they're not......and why???? Because they feel they must or he/she won't like me. BULL!!!! What happens after the 3rd or 4th date? I'll tell you......by this time you start finding out what's really underneath the facade. Why not just be YOU?
You folks can all live in your plastic bubble......I''ll just be me.....plain but real!
