A. "Gross" is a relative term and is absolutely a matter of opinion. There is certainly nothing dangerous or at all harmful about doing it (assuming there are no diseases involved) and so if someone (or both) enjoy(s) it, then let them enjoy!
On the other hand....
B. As for the response - just focus on the clit after she takes a shower and everything will stay clean and bloodless - I know 2 things from personal experience: 1. Its not only kind of boring to just go straight for the clit and stay there the whole time, but its kind of difficult to do if you are both getting really into it. and 2. Assuming the girl IS starting to really enjoy it (which is part of the whole point), juices start to flow, and things tend to get very wet.
