..and the paranoia sets in... Unfortunately in our over zealous efforts to prove that we are not racists, we have inadvertently created an environment in which any criticism of an African American is attributed to racism no matter how deserving of criticism the person is.Its not paranoia " if it is based on past experience or expectations learned from the experience of others."
Seriously when this first happened many were saying people were only outraged because Vick is African American...the outrage was based on the cruelty and maliciousness of his enterprise. But what the media and most in this new culture immediately assumed was that people were persecuting Vick because he is a Minority.
The treatment of Obama epitomizes this, no matter what the issue is or what the criticism is eventually someone in the media or in Politics will attribute the criticism to racism and not any real issue. | |

I believe you to be overstating things by throwing "any" in there. It's difficult to discuss an issue like this with all of the "always" and "nevers" floating around. Overstating something for emphasis (or for any reason) isn't helpful.
That issue aside, being called a racist doesn't make one a racist. Racism exists in one's belief system and is evidenced by behaviors, not by others' reactions to the behavior. There is no reason to be intimidated by a reaction (ex: an accusation of racism).
Feeding into others' reactions is where the paranoia comes in.
In my opinion there are two common scenerios; if it's not paranoia it's in intentional effort to shift the focus.
These days it's easy to turn a discussion about racism into a discussion about accusations of racism (i.e. reactions.) That is convenient for some, I suppose. | |
