I don't believe that illegals should get public assistance, etc, without proving they are contributing somehow...payroll taxes, ss, etc.. I've worked close to the border for 15 years, and the absolute overwhelming majority of the illegals are just trying to get a job, somehow, to send some $$ back home. I've helped, watered, fed some of these people walking through the desert lots of times...the whole thing is just a mess. They are alot more valuable to the economy than you realize.... | |

It seems to me to be a great hypocrisy to go across the ocean for the benefit of people, but we won't do anything about our neighbor to the south. | |

Posted: 5/6/2005 3:42:10 PM | wow i see a lot of hate on this thread, though i do agree you should be legal to be here, but i have read a lot of books on mexicans sneaking over here, half the time its to get money to send back to their familys , i think if half of us went over to mexico an saw the conditions these people were living in we wouldnt be as critical. i mean i have lots of friends who have gone over there on mission trips trips an they are devistated by the way those people live its terrible, go over there an u will understand why they want so bad to come here. another thing is as far as the sneaking they sneak because they cant afford to get in legally, depending on how they get here illegally u have to pay, an legally u have to pay twice as much plus all the other things that go with . They have people over here who help them get over here, they have to put up a fee but its nothing compared to the legal fee , so thats why a lot sneak.
one thing i wanted to point out if nothing else , is if it werent for half the mexicans we see from the freeways as we drive by working in the fields growing our food , i dont think we would have half the food in the store we think we would if they werent here. you an i both no that u dont see white or blacks out there busting their back in the heat of the day , no who do u see? the mexicans so before we start being hateful an saying go back to ur country remember they help us out in many ways an even the legal mexicans they are both geting cheated out of money because they dont get the correct wages like everyone else. im not asking anyone to agree with me just trying to point out the positive , an as far as them taking over cali, highly doubt it, we live right next to mexico what do u expect when u come to california? to see mostly europeans? no meixcans. get over it or move to a different state things arent changing anytime soon. | |

As for securing the boarder it has to be done. Go to a place like Germany and let your visa expire. You'll get a phone call reminding you that you're there illegally and they will send police to get you! They know who comes and goes 'cause it's simply good business to do so. Nobody is advocating closing the borders (at least no sane person), but shouldn't we be very aggressive about knowing who comes and goes?
I say yes, and if it hurts someone's feelings they'll just have to get over it. | |

Your problem here and on the topics of tax money to groups is that your view is knee jerk and superficial.As I've suggested before increase your knowledge of the topic before popping off about thing you have such a superficial,rudementary knowledge.
1)Did you know the US has "put pressure" on Mexico>
2)Do you understand the historical relationship?
3)Do you know the benefit Americans particularly in Southwestrn states have had from Mexican labor?
4)Which group has profited more from drug the trade Mexicans indiviually or collectively or white Americans?
5)How would YOU "put pressure" on Mexico?
I think the immigration problems in the US is very complex.Particularly because we share borders.Spanish will become a 2nd language in the US within our generational lifetimes.The keys are to 1)provide an educational system that meets the needs of Latinos particularly Mexican.Mexicans are by far the largest group of latinos in the US.
2)grant citizenship to all law abiding,working illegal immigrants upon request
3)Better monitor the border
4)require the Mexican government to provide a net job gain figure for every 1000 dollars of US foriegn aide whether grant or loan.
5)Mexico too is a Opec member,the same things done IN Iraq could have been done in Mexico.I don't mean the destruction and occupation of the country,but the rebuilding effort/aide for alot less.This goes along with the theme of misplaced priorities.It seems many Americans are blaming "others" instead of looking at the goverment and its spending. The next poster that makes a statement of what Mexicans"do to or against" or ethnic initiatives taking tax dollars should ONLY do so AFTER looking at US SPENDING PERIOD...Look at the BUDGET!
Is there a problem at the border YES for several reasons.I don't have answers for then at this time for they are very complex.I do have SIMPLE suggestions. | |

Mexicans make a great work forse where labor like what you've talked about goes. They do make a great contribution to the country. But when I deserve $10 +benefits, and "they" hire an Illegal immigrant for $6 without benefits or overtime or anything, is not only exploiting, but it hurts the economy. You're out one less tax payer. One less person to fund this person who's here illegally. I think that maybe we should make it easier for them to become citizens. Maybe we should help Mexico recover their govt. Rather than spending billions of dollars on a war that shouldn't be taking place. But leaving the borders, and defending illegal actions isn't the answer. It's dangerous and naive. | |

You kow, the best deal we ever got on land in this counrty? I mean we got off SO cheap. The Louisiana purchase. I think it came out to literally pennies on the dollar per acre. Now should we have more compassion for those that we got Lousiana from? Well, you can if you want. California, like Lousiana belongs to us, and has for QUITE some time. And this country is my home, whether or not I like it. I pay money out of my income for it's upkeep, and to help those less fortuante than me, who may need govt. benefits. I do not want to pay for someone who wants to just laze around my home, and not put into it what s/he should, like every other person here. They are robbing our own people of what they need. My step mom at one point in her life needed food stamps. She only needed them for a month. She was unemployed, and had two kids to take care of. (she was sepertated from my dad at the time.) It was an emergency, they really really needed them. Just for a bit. She couldn't get them. They just wouldn't give them to her. Said she makes too much money. But some illegal person can come over here with their babies and get them. No problem. I would rather pay for one month for my step mom, who DOES pay taxes, and DID deserve them, then pay for someone who doesn't pay taxes, and has no business here other than to take advantage of my money. Your money, too. | |
