If you say so - it must be true. Is this logical? Or reasonable?

Here's some food for thought. How many of you actually believe that the moon landing in july 1969 by neil armstrong and buzz aldrin was actually real? This was a time of the great space race to the moon.... Against the russians. The americans won and since then, not a single person has gone back to the moon. Why? It's only been 40 years... yet britian launched an unmanned space probe to the moon a mere 6 months ago to find out what it was made of. hmmm... thoughts?
Don't you think it would be more efficient to ask who actually DOESN'T believe the moon landing was "actually real?"

Not a single person has gone to the moon since Aldrin and Armstrong? Are YOU living on the moon? Denying an event or pretending it didn't happen doesn't change reality, friend. Although I don't use Wikipedia for any research of worth, it seems appropriate here, as it is simple and will give you a starting point should you choose to join us in reality.

"In total, twenty-four American astronauts have traveled to the Moon, with twelve walking on its surface and three making the trip twice... Apart from the inherent dangers of manned Moon expeditions as seen with Apollo 13, one reason for their cessation according to astronaut Alan Bean is the cost it imposes in government subsidies."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_landing#cite_note-3

With due respect, this thread is not food for thought. Everyone has head of the conspiracy theories and hoax theories. We moved past that decades ago. Here's a crumb for thought, in case you're interested... click through the pictures and read on...
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/07/photogalleries/apollo-moon-landing-hoax-pictures/

You know, when I first saw this thread I was shocked that it has gone on for 23 pages... discussing something that is at this point a non-negotiable, really. Then I looked at the last page... this is the only post on page 23 that isn't sniping back and forth and that is actually on topic. Way to go, guys! Get a room.

Lets face it. We live in a world littered with morons. There are still people who believe the earth is flat. Reality is something that's simply an annoying inconvenience for them. It's a shame but, as that famous country comedian said "there's no cure for stupid".

On the surface, I would have to agree with you.
But, the idea of the world being flat was not an idea promulgated by the 'common' man. It was the scientific thought of the time!

I am cynical about the intent of the puppet masters of our world , cynical enough to believe it could have all been'staged' ... we needed to believe we had 'done' it and if you need to believe somthing enough .. you do . And I don't care much if we did or dodn't land on the moon . I have always thought we should be finding out more about the core of our little planet ... now that would be interesting .

Could you please define "scientific" as you used it in that sentence? I don't believe that natural philosophy, as was extant then, is what we would have regarded as science.

Thanks.

I'll sooner doubt a whole bunch of things (like the real motives behind public policy) than wether or not we went to the moon.

Well ..... saharam .... you are rather arrogant to think you are the only one not snipping back and forth and on topic....
I would have to say you actually didn't read the other 23 pages and just want to pretend you are above everyone else.

oh .... and you were snipping in your quote and first paragraph.

so you should join those guys in that room you want them to get.

Good question ! I would just plunge in and go there just to find out what questions I should have asked ! I am going to read Jules Verne's book again to see it from my more 'learned' scientific perspective . Plunging in is not a 'bad' reason for doing something ! Curiosity may have killed the cat , but as a human being , I would like to know more about what is there in the middle of our planet . I suppose we hypothesise but we don't know . A question , a broad one , that might be asked and aswered is [as with the arguments i've read for the benefits of the moon landing - or not ] what chemical changes might there be under great heat ? To me it's a mystery I'd love to tackle .... you could take me along [and nobody even think that evil thought 'instead of the chimp '] , I mean it .. you guys could get me up to speed with scientific facts .. and I'd go . Come on oh ye masters of fact .... isn't it the least bit intrigueing for you ..... or are you all puffing on your academic Sherlock Holmes type pipes and muttering in ahuddle together . This is the wicked picture of you all ...'Good point , George ' ... "Mmmmm there is value in your supposition Lawrence "... "What lack of research prompted that remark ... where are your sources John !?"... that I get quite often .

Personally, I'd like to see a hellova lot less exploration and a lot more appreciation for the fact that this earth is our sustenance and we treat it like a toilet.

Actually ...
if we treated it like a toilet
it would be cleaner
we really treat it like an abandoned farm
which in a way is what it is
some people just need to treat everything with more respect
exploration is great
just take your garbage home with you
don't steal everything you discover that interests you
and watch what those footprints do
like on the moon [keeping in context]... they might be there for thousands of years.
like when you leave plastic crap behind or dioxin

back on track ... if we focus the hubble on the moon we could probably see the footprints ... the abandoned flag and rover.

That's fine. I asked the question because I thought you had a burning desire to know a particular answer to something. More would certainly be known about the planet. I wonder what other technologies would find roots in that type of research as well.

A lot has already been done in that direction by studying mine walls, fresh magma and natural canyons. The depths that those structures represent are small in comparison with the thickness of the mantle, though.

you guys could get me up to speed with scientific facts .. and I'd go

I'll start building an explorer today!

isn't it the least bit intrigueing for you

Oh, it's intriguing. How to convey that level of intrigue to funding sources is the problem!

No, we can't. It's too far away and the Hubble doesn't have the sub-sub-sub arc second resolution required. However, check out the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. They've recently got pics of the lunar landing sites, complete with the tracks followed by the astronauts. Very cool. Still no sign of the flag, though. Still way too small.

Journey to the center of the Earth? Sure, if someone wants to go to the core, they're going to need an awful lot of technology to deal with the tremendous pressure and heat of miles of molten rock overhead. How do we know there's an iron core at the bottom, though? Well, we have a magnetic field. The rest, educated conjecture and theory.

Bluesman, we may not agree on much but we certainly agree on this. One of the by-products credited with the space age is the birth of the environmental movement. Having listened to astronauts talk (even interviewed one), their space experience gives them an even greater appreciation of the uniqueness, and smallness, of our planet.

Dang .... too bad about that;
cause until they see the footprints and flag from that initial landing ... the conspiritors will hold onto their belief that it was faked ... then the real landing occured later but can't produce the same images that were presented to us publicly on that historic day in 1969.
Have to remember there was lots of hallucinating going on back then and the straights thought they could get away with anything.
Especially since the JFK thing worked and that was live infront of thousands of people.

They would anyway. "Those photos from that 'probe'? Well, first of all, we know they don't actually have the ability to send a probe all the way to the moon (or Mars, or anywhere else). So those photos were faked too."

It's a never ending cycle. You could put them in spacesuits, plunk 'em right next to the kit left behind on the moon and they'll insist you transported them in secret to Arizona. Of course, at that point, they might attempt to take off their helmets. Should we stop 'em?

Yes, and here they are, for all the "doubting thomases":

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/multimedia/lroimages/apollosites.html

LRO Sees Apollo Landing Sites
07.17.09

"NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, has returned its first imagery of the Apollo moon landing sites. The pictures show the Apollo missions' lunar module descent stages sitting on the moon's surface, as long shadows from a low sun angle make the modules' locations evident.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera, or LROC, was able to image five of the six Apollo sites, with the remaining Apollo 12 site expected to be photographed in the coming weeks.

The satellite reached lunar orbit June 23 and captured the Apollo sites between July 11 and 15. Though it had been expected that LRO would be able to resolve the remnants of the Apollo mission, these first images came before the spacecraft reached its final mapping orbit. Future LROC images from these sites will have two to three times greater resolution.

The image of the Apollo 14 landing site had a particularly desirable lighting condition that allowed visibility of additional details. The Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package, a set of scientific instruments placed by the astronauts at the landing site, is discernable, as are the faint trails between the module and instrument package left by the astronauts' footprints."

Namaste............

I guess that's me. You've given me a number and taken away my name!

It's so silly to puff your way and plant flags on the moon if you can just stay on our darling planet and go in and find what it's like and what hitherto maybe unknown functions it performs ?

Don't forget that the US moon landing program was inspired by the Cold War with the USSR. At the time Kennedy promised that the US would be first to the moon and would do it within that decade, US security forces feared that the USSR would get to the moom first and set up missile bases. You can hit anywhere on earth from the moon. It's the ultimate "high ground".
Would that have happened? Probably not. Neither the USSR nor the USA could affort that luxury.
Still, fear's pretty much what drove it., not scientific curiosity.

pretty far away to be the ultimate high ground
considering how long it would take for a missle to get back to earth it would be a foolish idea at best.
Space station makes more sense .... and the Russians beat you at that.
Skylab crashed in very short order. [1979 I believe] while the Russians were still playing around in their tin can.

I've recently located a 24 page document with incontrovertible proof that 1) there is nothing as tight as a closed mind and 2) if you argue with idiots they will drag you down to their own level and beat you with experience. ;)
