While you won't have good cause to expect fancy 5-course meals on my table, the grub I serve is tasty and healthy. My contributions to potllucks have always been popular.

Mom was a good cook but didn't have much influence on my cooking skills. I am primarily self-taught and do experiment with adapting existing recipe, etc. I usually cook for one but do cook, instead of taking the easy way out as solitary diners often do.

Is it about a gourmet meal?.. a 5 course meal?...or just really good food with good company?

I think we lose focus on what is really important. I would rather enjoy the company of someone in the preparation of a meal and spend the quality time together, and later enjoy that meal. Not about the cost or the difficulty factor of the preparation...but about sharing.

My mom is a chef... I think she has lost sight of what a meal is about, for her it is about presentation and impressing others with her skills.
For me it is about the enjoyment factor for all those who are partaking of the food.

Cool post westernrose! Sharing food with people I care about is a beautiful thing.
Creativity in the kitchen rocks, but if a guy can't cook so great, so what. Hopefully there is some contribution to the overall effort; that's good enough for me (especially if you bring home FISH!)

The original poster has concluded wrongly. Many of us guys cook and do it very well...but will not cook for him. I cook for my lady...every weeks and knows many guys who do so regularly. Maybe he is self promoting that he can cook. Way the go, boy.

You are right, Westernrose. Sharing a meal with others is much more rewarding than the cooking part. Hell of a good reason to keep it simple.

It's rare in my life !

find a guy that cooks ,, you'll probably find he has a good mom that taught him well

OR you'll find that he has decided to cook because he needs to eat....

We aren't that copmplicated and don't find a need to come up with other reasons for it.

Love to cook, but mostly when it's to share

Maybe my cookin ain't so fancy, but it comes in many courses : Monday's, Tuesday's, Wednesday's, Thursdays and leftover days.

I have been a single dad for ten years and all three of my kids are healthy, wise and hate my cookin'. Iffin it ain't in a McYuks, or BK or Pizza Hut box, is isn't real food.

I didn't really think it was "so" rare. I was married to a guy that could cook and bake somethings very well... scrubbing a toilet or washing the floor were different stories!

all the guys i know LOVE to cook and r GREAT @ it!!!
personally, I can cook but hate it with a passion and rather wash dishes, clean the oven and/ or the toilet.
Baking on the other hand is something entirely different.

Knowing how to cook is a survival instinct for guys . . .

Seriously, I think that the 'ethic' that women are great cooks because they are supposed to be homemakers is going, going nearly gone and that more men are really good cooks. Most of my single friends are good cooks . . .

So do that mean the old axiam of the best way to a heart is also going, going . . . .

Today I went fishing on the ocean with a friend. Initially low-lying fog meant only 50 foot visibility but once that burned off we had bright sunny weather and no wind at all. It was wonderful to be out on the water. If wasn't long before she caught a nice salmon (we then released several under-sized fish). Once back ashore and the boat was cleaned up and the gear was put away, she made a salad while I baked the fish in sour cream sauce, my favourite recipe for fresh salmon. It was delicious meal and wonderful way to cap off a great day.

Sharing a meal like that, and its making sure beats the solo dining experience, even when the food is delicious. It was a good day for all, except for the fish of course!

A RARE GEM that's for sure!

...Light, refined, learned and noble, harmonious and orderly, clear and logical, the cooking in some strange manner, intimately linked to the genius of her greatest men...

beautifully said Rose
from the North Pole to Antarctica people of different cultures enjoy the togetherness at a meal, be it a hard earned pray cooked over a campfire or something at a more civilized setting.

not too much fun though when for the daily routines to feed the kids or oneself, I do enjoy those special occasions cooking with inspiring company.

That is, without a doubt, always the selling point for me when it comes to talents. I love to cook
with someone but if a gent enjoys cooking for me I am such a sucker for a great home-cooked meal.
It doesn't have to be gourmet fare, I simply appreciate the effort. Add a bottle of wine and I am totally sold.

On the other hand I have met men who simply do not want any assistance in the kitchen
with them EVER and I have to say that you have to let me be part of the process occasionally
or I am going to resent not being part of the event.

Cooking together can be a very sensual pleasure and it is one that I thoroughly enjoy with a partner!
Here's to great cooks who like to share!

I hardly ever just throw together something to eat, even if it's just me and the lad I feel the urge to ramp it up a little ...put a little love in your cooking and eating will become more that just getting sustenance it will be something to be "savoured"...

I love to cook for a couple or a group, and Fiery I have to say sometimes I do need to just go at it in the Kitchen and would rather not have any help, though there is something special
about whirling around in the kitchen whilst the "one" your cooking for is enjoying a nice wine and watching your every move.

Then again cooking with someone you're in love with can be great foreplay,
good food made with love and passion is an excellent aphrodisiac....

Hmmmm, it must be a full moon....

Off Topic just a bit - speaking of good food made with love and passion, for those of you that believe in the sensuousness and magic of food, read "Like Water for Chocolate".........

Perhaps there is a man...... somewhere....that can make that Rose Petal Sauce.....

There is lots to be said about chocolate *dolores*. Wasn't that a fabulous and sensual treat (Like
Water for Chocolate")?!?!? Hmmmmm, having said that I think I need a shower cuz my mind
just went travelling to places it hasn't been in wayyyyy too long. ;>(

Splendid, I did say "occasionally". I love it when I am told to stay out of the kitchen and can sit
back in utmost admiration of a man who can skillfully take command of the kitchen and
the subsequent culinary pleasures. I am, so to speak "eating of their hand" and enjoying
every minute. But I confess to the guilty pleasure of enjoying sharing the experience as well.

I tried that recently - I was the wine drinking watcher.... you two sucked especially when you tried to cook the meat with the self cleaning feature !
