filthy....

I dont know if you listen to sports talk radio, but I work nights and listen late at night. A guy called up the station and said that some 4 string wide reciever for the chargers was "catching everything in practice"......and...."antinio gates back up was running routes really well"......

As Allen Iverson put it best....."practice?.....we talking bout practice?

I think it was about 4 years ago, the pats lost to the cards like 34-6 in preseason......all the cards fans were saying how great they were, I think they went 4-12 that year...lol

preseason and practice...nothing compared to "big boy football" on sundays...

these people all said they wanted to see how "tomlin looked". i don't know what that means. they said he "looked good" last night. i don't even know where to begin when i hear that stuff. and you know e-- that every team has a kid from pinhead tech that is "the next big thing". but 9 times out of ten he ends up on a practice squad at best or working at the foot locker.

Hi guys and girls,

Just logging in from the UK and as an avid American Football fan for the past 21 years here, and the fact that most of the posters on here are from the US, I just wanted to know what your thoughts were on the Phins v Giants game being held here at Wembley in October...the first regular season game ever to be held outside of North America.

Your thoughts?

filthy:"""they wanted to see how "tomlin looked". i don't know what that means. they said he "looked good" last night. i don't even know where to begin when i hear that stuff."""

--I don't want to make too much of the fact that Mike Tomlin became the first Steelers coach in 42 years to win his preseason debut because it was, after all, a preseason debut. But it was an important step in the ongoing process of establishing a new program and presence after the ultra-dominant regime of Bill Cowher. Tomlin's most impressive achievement was not that he led the Steelers to a 20-7 victory over the Saints. It was the rapid comfort he showed as a first-time CEO. His demeanor was calm as he maintained a big-picture view while allowing his assistants to handle the majority of details. "I really kind of took myself out of it," Tomlin told reporters afterward. That is much harder than it sounds, especially for a fiery former defensive coordinator who was extremely hands-on

I watched a bit of the game the other night. I like the looks of the guy. Mind you they turned down Russ grimm in the interview process and he's gone to be the offensive line coach for the Cardinals...anyone remember the Hogs?

Phins v Giants game being held here at Wembley in October

Take the Dolphins. They're the home team...just kidding. .

I anticipate the Dolphins running game to be much much better than it's been in literally decades. Ronnie Brown's pumped to have a breakout season with their new head coach.
Giants are still having a hard time with coach Coughlin's disciplinarian ways and expect them to trade away mainstay Strahan in the next couple of weeks. Strahan still wants to play, but then again he's not sure. But what is sure is that he's been going on tv sports shows the last couple of years doing lots of negative innuendo regarding the coach expecting them 5 minutes early for practise while Strahan bucks him and suggests that means he should be able to go home 5 minutes earlier.

Between him on TV and Tiki barber writing his opinions weekly in the local NY papers, the Giants (one of my more likeable teams) have been a tough team to cheer for the last couple of years. Overrated, over-hyped and under-performing and underachievers. I think the Giants will not get on the same page as their head coach again this year, and it'll be Coughlin's last year there, if he even makes it thru the season.
Take the Phins plus 3 points. Hope you enjoy the game!

ps. both teams get their bye week right after the game so it shouldn't affect them that much as the season goes along to have travelled abroad for this one . Cheers.

i'll reserve my opinion on "how tomlin looks" until he loses two in a row and the media asks him a stupid question in the aftermath. russ grimm was a great player and not too many great players in any sport make great head coaches.

sly sterling....

before you start putting "tomlin" into the hall of fame after one preseason game......hold it back a little bit.....

everything is vanilla in preseason, coaches DO NOT CARE if they win or lose ...they care about making cuts, they care about everyone making it out healthy....

it just kills me when people make such a big deal out of preseason, im telling you....it means NOTHING.....

do you think payton of the saints is sitting in his office right now freaking out because drew brees didnt score on his first drive?...cmon now....he is got bigger fish to fry...

its preseason folks.....it means NOTHING when it comes to winning or losing....

Oh no worries eman, I'm not putting anyone in the hall of fame. i was interested in seeing filthy's new coach that's all. He looks good out there...looks like he belongs on the football sidelines. Mind you, like filthy says, everyone smiles and chuckles with the refs when you're up 17 points near halftime. We'll see how he is when he feels like slamming his headset on the ground. He looks like he can get emotional.

Glad ben is going to get to air that arm of his out this year according to their battleplans. We may see a little different look to the Steelers this year. i've always had admiration for their franchise, but, hey, I'm a Dolphins fan since I was 11 (2 years before they went undefeated), so I don't have THAT much admiration for the black and gold

ask any coach, ask any player, they will tell you 4 preseason games is way too much. I think 2 is more than enough.

Its all about money, owners make money on games that dont matter. I am going to a broncos preseason game here in couple weeks, they will still charge me 6 bucks for a beer, 5 bucks for a fricking hot dog, in a game that means nothing to me, other that heading to do something on a saturday night.

money...plain and simple...

i got to get to work here, but I luv talkin' football.
You might be right, but to me, of all the pro sports in N. America, probably football would have the most important aspects to a pre-season, because of 3 items:
1) the relative shortness of the season as compared to 162 games in b-ball and in the 80's for hockey and basketball; You got 16 games and that's all you got. There's no all-star break, there's no after the all-star break. Once they turn the corner after American Thanksgiving, you got 4 weeks to have it all pay off. You have to have them ready for week one moreso than any other sport that I watch I think. the football season to me is like a big horserace and you can come from the back of the pack, but it's tough to pass a lot of teams in the stretch drive when the stretch drive is only maybe 4 games.
2)the size of the squads...i.e. Maybe two games, maybe four, but you need time to bring together a roster in excess of 40 men, mostly divvied up into 3 main squads, offence, defence and special teams; and
3; the complexity of the game with the various schemes run by co-ordinators. Baseball you basicallly have 4 or 5 types of pitches that the offense revolves around and there is some alignments in baseball, but not the extent of switching personnell and sets the way football is. Various complicated blitzing schemes, pulling schemes, nickel and dime packages, man on man coverages, timing patterns. I just don't believe a good football team can just turn it on like a water tap on Opening Day and say there, we're ready to go.
Once the fundamentals have been worked on over and over again in preseason, then weekly adaptations can be more easily made for each upcoming opponent with their various schemes.

But as always, money for sure will be a part of it.

ya thanks a million filth, erm, actually 32 million. Looks like he's going to have it done (his knee) this week. Like Zach Thomas says, better to get it done now than in the middle of the season. He should be ready to for Opening Day if he gets it done this week.
I like the looks of the fish this year. We may actually be competitive for a whole season if everyone stays healthy. New coach, new qb, new nutcase in the linebacker corps. Ronnie Brown spent the whole off-season studying video of Ladanian Tomlinson.
Could this be the year of the Fish?

Phins aint going anywhere this year

that's not true. They're going to London to visit the queen.

speaking of training camp and preseason:
If the Dolphins are going to break out of this five-year playoff drought, the right path must begin taking shape during training camp. Sure, every training camp is important for its own unique reasons. But given the state of this franchise, given the fact that there’s a new coach, a new quarterback and an entirely new offense, this becomes as crucial a summertime as the Dolphins have had in recent memory.

Start right and everything can fit nicely into place. Struggle from the beginning and it becomes a more difficult challenge.

QUARTERBACK: No position has failed this franchise more since Dan Marino retired. The Dolphins have desperately needed a difference-maker and instead they have settled for mediocrity. Will that change now that Trent Green is the man on the spot? Is John Beck the young protégé we have been waiting for? Where does Cleo Lemon fit into the mix?

While none of these questions can be answered with much conviction now, I can tell what I do believe.

I believe if Green stays healthy, he can be a great addition to this team. Green is highly intelligent and definitely motivated to produce. The fact that he is at ease with Cameron’s system can not be overstated. He throws as nice a pass as we’ve seen since, well, Marino.

I believe Beck will sit this season, so what we see in the preseason will be the only real evidence of things to come. Cameron knows quarterbacks well enough to know that Beck is far better off watching from the sideline his first season. I believe Lemon will be a capable back-up and could serve this team well as a starter, if needed. Bottom line: This is the best situation the Dolphins have had at quarterback, top to bottom, in a long time

Sorry guys,

My original question was meant to guage how you felt about losing a home game if you're a 'Fins fan and the prospect of playing a game in the UK..it doesn't matter who you root for-just wanted your thoughts on the expansion of the NFL into Europe and the possibility of adding another game so that each team plays one game somewhere else in the world every 18 years or so to satisfy the non-US demand.

it really makes no sense to play these games in the u.k or japan or even mexico. it does in fact take a home game away from a team. and for what? to sell a more merchandise worldwide? i don't really get it either

i agree. Maybe I lack creative vision, but i don't see the NFL having a division over there for quite awhile, if ever. So it can't be for much more than to sell merchandise by exposing the game. I haven't been to an NFL game now in probably close to two decades so it has no effect on me, but all kidding aside, home field advantage against the Giants is important as every game counts in the NFL, and home field advantage is usually worth three points in most people's books.

Kind of like the Saints two seasons ago having to play a home game up in the meadowlands New Jersey because of hurricane Katrina. Not much of a home field advantage.

I think that it does make sense for the NFL to play a meaningful game throughout the rest of the world.. I was at the American Bowls from '86 (Bears v Cowboy's) until the last game with the Cowboys & Lions and had the absolute pleasure of briefly meeting Jimmy Johnson, Darryl Gibson (Lions/Chargers, he even gave me his Neumann gloves!), Eddie De Bartello, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Marino, the Marks Brothers, Howie Long, Merv 'The Swerv' Fernandez, Troy Aikman and Barry Sanders and I had the honour of watching Walter Payton (RIP), Tony Dorsett and numerous other NFL Legends up close-TV will never replicate seeing your heroes so close.

A regular season game once a year, somewhere throughout the world can only help to establish the NFL as a truly global competitor and with Wembley in London being sold out 4 or 5 times over then surely the time is right to look at the global opportunities that are being presented, on a silver platter, to the NFL..

Once again I really like the AFC north division. Baltimore, Cincinatti, and Pittsburgh all have high expectations this year.

Pittsburgh's new coach looks like a positive one and with a healthy Ben Roethlisberger who looks as confident as ever, looks dangerous. They still have a solid defence and a running back you can't ignore. I think over all they are the more well balanced team in the division.

Baltimores finally come up with a running game solution. Last year I was disappointed how they went with Jamal Lewis on too many carries. Mike Anderson wasn't given enough opportunities and should have been put as a starter, but with Jamal as a short yardage power runner. Now with Willis Mcgahee, its really gonna take alot of pressure off Mcnair. When McNair has help with the running game, he becomes a better QB and steps up when he needs to. Their defence.... nough said. lol.

Cincinatti....well to be honest I think with they're terrible defence I don't expect them to come up on top. They were just horrific last at stopping the run. Cinci can put alot of points on the board, but at the same time they give up too much so you never know whats gonna happen. Carson Palmer is a great QB though, best in the division. Well, simply put they are the best offence in that division but if their defence doesn't step up then they could end up being a HUGE disapointment AGAIN this year.

.....Oh ya, good luck Cleveland. lol.

Its basically gonna come down to who is the most healthiest.

the season ticket holders don't get a break when a home game is played in europe or where ever. you pay for eight home games and they make you buy the crummy preseason games. the league is about 4 teams too many as it is in my opinion...... when i was a sophomore in high school i had the "honor" of being run over by tony dorsett as we got beat by 40.

Hey Mc,
The AFC is stacked this year, the Steelers may be on the outside looking in. Although their schedule isn't that bad this year, they could be a wildcard entry, but don't come to Baltimore!

Hey Nick,
The Giants are a team with a lot of question marks on offense and defense. The "Fins" are probably the better team-all around. Pretty soon there will be european teams in the NFL - mark my words! Can you say London Cruisaders!

i think that there may be a little bit more involved than the popularity of the sport. the nfl europe folded this year after 14 or 15 years. the league had condensed itself to having all but 1 or 2 teams in germany. there is no way that the nfl will give a franchise to one european city. it will need a 4 city minimum. however, montreal canada is a possibility.
