Mmmm...it's been too long...Even better - summer caribou, barbecued whole on a spit over an open fire at the beach :>

Aside from cultural issues, why do people eat cows and pigs when they dont eat dogs and cats? We don't eat dogs or cats because we owe it to them not to. Dogs were domesticated initially to assist man with various chores as well as a means of alert and protection. Cats were initially used to keep vermin away from food stores before refrigeration. Besides as stated they are just so darn cute ....

| Why do people eat meat? Posted: 11/5/2007 11:01:58 AM | I have hunted and killed Various animals and I've enjoyed it we are after all predators but my moral stance is that I will never kill any animal I don't intend to eat. I would refuse to use snares or traps as they cause horrific and unnecessary suffering and I know that animals must be killed in the quickest most painless way possible as meat from terrified animals is flooded with chemicals that make it tough a bitter. Ideally I would love to hunt all my own food but given hunting restrictions and work commitments It will have to remain a treasured pastime. | |

suspect as they get brought up as pets, people wont want to eat them, in the same way as it is next to impossible to get horse meat here, but go over to france and there is loads

| Why do people eat meat? Posted: 11/7/2007 4:33:42 PM | | I have to admit, if I ever tried dogmeat and liked it, I wouldn't care what it was. Example: Emu meat. Emu's are kind of adorable in an awkward way. But I'll eat it; it's damned good eatin' :D The only thing stopping me form eating lamb is that I don't like the taste. | |

| Why do people eat meat? Posted: 11/7/2007 4:40:20 PM | Well.. Let's see...
Eat the cow, pet the cat. Eat the cat, pet the cow..
Hmm...
Which of these two doesn't work.

The bigger question is why we are the only species to consume milk after infancy?

We do not eat cats and dogs due to the fact that cats and dogs show at least some sign of intelligence. Also cat and dog tastes really bad, I've been to Korea, I've tried it, don't wish to do so again.
Why do we eat cow, I think it was Homer Simpson who said "If we were not meant to eat meat then why did god make it taste so good". Since the dawn of time man has eaten meat, it is what and who we are. we are the top of the food chain... well until the vampires take over.

| Why do people eat meat? Posted: 11/21/2007 7:52:39 AM | | People were meat eaters long before we were plant eaters. People are now omnivores which need meat and plants to be healthy. Thats why vegans lack certain nutrients and look like you could blow them over with a strong breath. There is an enzyme in red meat that humans can't get from plants. | |

Cows and pigs will provide more meat than cats and dogs.

People were meat eaters long before we were plant eaters. People are now omnivores which need meat and plants to be healthy Not true. We have always been omnivores. Some of our australopithecine relatives were probably vegetarian or primarily vegetarian, but most hominids have been omnivores. Gorillas are mainly vegetarian, but chimps and bonobos are opportunistic predators. I don't know of any past or present great apes which are principally carnivorous. It's really only when you get to our most distant relatives [lemurs, tarsiers] among the primates that you find a significant of insectivory. After that, the next closest relatives are insectivores [Insectivora, such as shrews; and Microchiroptera, the small bats] or frugivores [Megachiroptera, the fruit bats].

Cats, dogs and other cute-es, eaten all over the world... Hang out at a county farm for a bit, don't get to close(as friends/like you do with cat or dog), The Livestock...Oh my god is Live...Stock! Just like when you kill the carrot...pulling it out of the ground! Tofu...was living ingredient at some point. The human body requires more than Veggies. Our Brains required the meat as we developed. Change it all in your life time or 15,000 years! Get over your ind. self! And that's what it is Self! Ken. P.S. Who made Who (meat) so you could think, (#2#$%@ off)

Aside from cultural issues, why do people eat cows and pigs when they dont eat dogs and cats?
People do eat Dogs and Cats, its just not common. Parts of Asia and Europe have conumed both dogs and cats at difrent points in history.
morally speaking it should be the same, right?
Morally speaking there is no difrence. They are living, thinking, feeling animals with aproximatelly the same levels of intelect and understanding, so if you can moral justify eating one, then you should have no moral objections to eating the other. However people do not always base thier dietry habits on morals.
Apart from the fact that we find cats or dogs cute, do they have a more developed sense of pain than cows or other animals we eat?
No, they have no more developed senses than any other mamal.
However there is another reaon why they may not be popular as a food source, other than being cute (personaly I find dog repulsive, but cows and goats can be cute) and that is that Dogs and Cats are primary predators.
Few animals tend to eat primary predators, because they eat other animals and store the waste products in thier flesh. This makes them rather unpleasnt to taste. Think about it, what would you rather your food taste of, the guts of gras, or the guts of a cow?
Humans are able to eat just about anything, but just because we can eat something, dose not mean we enjoy it. Because we have a sense of taste, we find difrent foods more paletable than others, and primary predators like Dogs and Cats, simply do not taste as good as herbivores do.
