Posted: 12/30/2008 9:02:44 PM | My new favourite is from Casino Royale. Yeah, I know -- most people will hop immediately to, "But he's a killer and a psychopath!" And they're right. Still, there's one scene in particular that just gets to me:
Vesper, the "Bond Girl" for the film, was involved in one of his kills. He returns to their room hours after that involvement and she's sitting in the shower, the rain pouring down on her, fully dressed and completely broken. He walks into the shower and sits down beside her.
He doesn't make eye contact with her. He doesn't speak to her. He doesn't reach out and put his arms around her. He simply sits down next to her in the rain. She reaches out, totally noninvasively, and touches his arm. When he doesn't react negatively to that little bit of trespassing she clings to that one spot on his arm. They don't talk. There are no huge protestations or demonstrations of emotion or compassion or empathy or guilt. They've simply shared and experience and are now sharing coping with it.
Sean Connery's Bond pulls her from the shower (which if you think about it is just a tad bit invalidating), dries her off, warms her up, makes lots of intense eye contact and Daddies her, telling her it will all be ok and then boffs her. Tim Dalton's Bond crawls into the shower and amongst much wailing and gnashing of teeth ends up not boffing her because he's too enamoured of his own ability to emote. The rest of the Bonds wouldn't have ruined their tuxedos.
But this new Bond... he just joins her in reality. "We've got blood on our hands and like Lady MacBeth, it just won't come off. Maybe if we quietly suck on each other's fingers for a few seconds we'll learn how to live with the reality that we have blood on our hands." He doesn't dress reality up to be something they can cope with or that exonerates them or explains them. Life is just about meeting that next moment and surviving it. He absolutely will partner with someone, but he will be neither scapegoat nor savior. He's just there too, living in reality with you.
There's something incredibly hot about that. | |

I also thought the scene in an "Officer and a Gentleman" when Debra Winger is riding Richard Gere is incredible sexy in a gritty real world way. | |
