| Who's the funniest person of all time? Posted: 9/28/2007 4:35:53 PM | Well, another that deserves honourable attention is Steven Colbert. He's created an entirely new approach to typical comedy, in the creation of his character.
His interview with Georgia Republican Lynn Westmoreland is one of the best examples of this new type of comedy.
Stephen Colbert: You co-sponsored a bill requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in the House of Representatives and in the Senate. Lynn Westmoreland: Um hum. S.C.: Why was that important to you? L.W.: Well, the Ten Commandments is not a bad thing for people to understand and to respect. S.C.: I'm with ya. L.W.: What better place could you have something like that than in a judicial building or in a courthouse? S.C.: That is a good question. Can you think of any better building to put the Ten Commandments than in a public building? L.W.: No. I think if we were totally without them we may lose a sense of our direction. S.C.: What are the Ten Commandments? L.W.: What are all of them? [Colbert nods.] L.W.: You want me to name them all? S.C.: Yeah, please. L.W.: Ummm. [Colbert holds up two fists, waiting for Westmoreland to count them off.] L.W.: Don't murder. Don't lie. Don't steal. Uhhhhh … I can't name them all. S.C.: Congressman, thank you for taking time away from keeping the Sabbath Day holy to talk to me.

If you can make people laugh, while educating them and opening their eyes, it's quite the accomplishment.

| Who's the funniest person of all time? Posted: 9/28/2007 4:57:38 PM | I find that some comedians were ahead of their times.
Charlie Chaplin Lucille Ball Jackie Gleason Mae West Caroll Burnett
There are great ones listed on this post also...
I find that I am very much attracted to the comedians that can actually make me laught without cussing, using sexual inuendos and degrading themselves. (ie: a fat comedian = fat jokes... A jewish comedian = jewish jokes... etc etc...)

| Who's the funniest person of all time? Posted: 9/29/2007 7:25:47 AM | Just a note... Not that is matters... For the French Canadians out there and perhaps the English Canadians who understand French...
The most intelligent funny twisted humour I loved...
Cré Bazil (I still remember his inability trying to climb steps to his apartment while totally inhibriated... The skit had no words and lasted for 15 minutes and it cracked up the whole French population of our country....)
Sol (The philosophical clown... Unbelievable intelligent humour with deep messages.)
Yvon Déchamps (I almost remember by heart his account with the battles between Montacalm and Wolfe on the plains of Abraham... )
Dominique Michel et Denise Filiatreault... (Way ahead of their times...)
They are classics to my eyes anyway....

Yvon Déchamps (I almost remember by heart his account with the battles between Montacalm and Wolfe on the plains of Abraham... )
The best and the brightest of Quebec's stand up comedy people, no doubt. A well known Quebec nationalist, he married an English Quebecer, Judy Richards. I started listening to him on the radio when I was young, and I couldn't understand the French slang (joual) he was using totally yet.
One of his better lines about that was " I hated the English so much , I married one. " They've been together a long time, and do some important charity work together.
Another nominee for the Quebec version of the OP's question, would be Jean Marc Parent. This guy was able to pull of things people never could anywhere else. One of the first things I saw from him was this sketch about being a "cripple". He did it in a wheel chair, and he was so good at it (exceptionally good) that people thought he was physically and mentally handicapped. He pushed peoples emotional buttons, made them uncomfortable, and also made them laugh.
He'd rent a big place, like the Montreal Forum, and then do a eight hour show.
He had his own show on TV, one which I attended a taping off. His did two things consistently with that show. One , he'd deliberately go over the time limit, and hold the network hostage.
Two, he'd get people all over Quebec to flash their lights in houses and cars. I remember the first time he asked that, and I decided to participate....and then saw several other houses in the neighborhood doing it.
He even got a commercial airliner from one of his sponsors, and flew it low over the island of Montreal , on live radio, and got people to flash them as he flashed his.
I really doubt that anyone else anywhere else could have managed to get away with what he did . A very talented and creative man.
I would also include a gut called Marc Labreche. He had a show in the mid-90's that was called "La fin du monde est à sept heures " ( The end of the world at seven o'clock), which was almost a model of what Stephan Colbert's show would be years later - except even more surrealistic - and hysterically funny.
All local Quebec artists, ones that will be unknown to most of you, but worthy of inclusion in this list - and quite able to proudly be included for their comedic talent here.

| Who's the funniest person of all time? Posted: 9/29/2007 11:34:36 AM | @Montreal Guy...
" I hated the English so much , I married one. "
So so true what you said about Yvon Déchamps...
I also remember once... He was being interviewed on one of the French talk shows... I do not remember the host... Anyway... He said in French, but losely translated in English.... "Because my wife is English, I only had sex to concieve... So,(I think he has had three children...)... you do the math...!!! "
Now... If you understand French humour in our neck of the woods... The whole audience and the camera men and anyone else who heard him laughed and laughed...
So did I in my home... He has a laughter that just makes you sart to giggle... It is uncanny...
Anyway... Just had to add...

| Who's the funniest person of all time? Posted: 9/29/2007 11:50:32 AM | Another time, at a gala show, he walked out to a warm appreciative applause from the audience.
He then proceeds to start off on a "rant" about how women are so stupid..... As expected, they start to react negatively.
But, in his brilliance, all the examples he gives "defending" his points are actually examples of how stupid MEN actually are.
In the end, all members of the audience are laughing equally as hard, at the "truth" of everything he is saying.
Like the best stand up people doing political commentary, he's only holding a mirror up to allow us to laugh at our own stupidity. It's really a reflection of all of us that we are laughing at.
Mort Sahl was another one, doing the same type of brilliant work. They offend everyone equally, because everyone can be so stupid - including them.
"There were four million people in the Colonies and we had Jefferson and Franklin. Now we have over 200 million and the two top guys are Clinton and Dole. What can you draw from this? Darwin was wrong!"
Mort Sahl
