Athletic or A Few Extra Pounds

I think alot of guys surround themselves with sports sports sports and watch ESPN, Golf Channel, Foos Ball (Waterboy), etc.... and try to play an intermural kickball or softball sport from time to time. Because of this, they think they are athletic.

Operative word being "watch" lol

Take an NFL football linebacker for example (thats the big chubby guys that play defense, when the other team has the ball)...

Glad you clarified that for "non-watchers" :)

And I'd definitely consider you "Athletic"

I don't think any guy who puts "Athletic" who has a big belly is being honest. You can be fit and have a big belly but what it says is "Body Type: Athletic" so it's asking for your appearance, not your level of fitness. Some people are just naturally skinny and don't exercise at all but they could put "Athletic" and even though it wouldn't be true no one would question them.

Well, I'm 5'5" and 140 pounds. When I was really cut, I was 133, so weight really doesn't seem to make a lot of difference on me. But I really don't know where to put myself, so I've plumped for Average. I know that Average means "add on 30 to 50 pounds", but what else should I put?

This is a very interesting post because as I look at the pics in my profile, it may look as though I am "A Few Extra Pounds" so that's what I put. I have 5% body fat, no stomach, but yet I feel as though people that look at my profile may see me as "A Few Extra Pounds" until they meet me in person and realize that I am very fit. I have actually been told by women on this site that they don't date fat men and that's why they aren't interested in me. It's like one of my friends. I thought he was fat until we went to the gym and I found out that he really is a professional bodybuilder like he claimed to be. Here I am loading the bar with 305lbs, thinking that he wouldn't lift it more than me and in fact he lifted it 10 times without a strain. I felt so ignorant because you can look at someone with their clothes on and they may look a certain way, but it's really not the case. That's why I just put what I think people on this site may think I am even though I know how I really am.

Hmm i wasnt sure what to click here either..settled for average..no beer gut or anything, and play lots of sport..but not massive muscles etc.

I guess for some, they hope it will get them more mail. For others..perhaps they truly see themselves differently to everyone else?.

Have to say, met two people off here so far, one was...50 pounds heavier than her pics..it didnt other me, but it shows you cant even go by the pics anyway ;p

Is George Forman "athletic"? How about those big sumo guys? Maybe the lineman in the NFL? They are all world class athletes, right!!! Would it be better to list height and weight? Saying you used to weight lift means nothing! Used to is in the past. POF only gives a few choices. When I read average, I think size 10. If you listed A FEW EXTRA POUNDS I think size 14 or more. Sometimes WAAAAY more. On the other hand. A few extra pounds could be a person who is in shape but feels they could lose 5 pounds. WE NEED MORE CHOICES!!!!! Tell me the woman is 5'7" and 140lbs. Show a picture. Let me figure it out.

This is a wide topic for debate as I know guys that are height/weight proportioned but are not thhletic at all. I know guys that are just the opposite and not athletic.

But....you have some of us (like me) who have some extra pounds and are athletic. I was athletic before the weight gain and remain athletic with the weight gain.
I am 49/5'11/220. When it comes to sports I can usually best guys younger, the same age or older. I can walk and hike and bike very well and for long distances. I ache a lot afterwards but I like being active.
Guys like me will usually choose either average or a few extra pounds because our weight does not impede us from being athletic.

Okay Mr. eno75, I cannot believe you changed your profile. I hope the few extra pounds you are referring to are the ones you gain when you put on your equipment. That has to be it, because I know they don't let people with vision problems or dementia into the fire department. When a person hears "a few extra pounds" they think excess body fat of which you have none. Unless there is some creative place you are hiding it....I must admit that this was an interesting blog because I have often marvelled at the differences in people's perceptions. My opinion (for what it's worth), is that there should be the following categories: Steroid Junkie, Gym Rat, Physically Fit, Thin, Average, Few Extra Pounds, Chubby, Fat, Morbidly Obese.....okay, I'm kidding, please refrain from sending me hateful replies. Truthfully I believe that what a person puts on their profile gives you a glimpse of how they see the world and themselves...and the last time I checked, everyone is entitled to their opinion. That's what makes this world so interesting.

Hi Guys,
My question to you all is why do some (not all) of the men state they are "athletic", yet when you look at their pics, with the beer belly hanging over, it's obviously a case of "A few extra pounds".

Ah, the beer belly...If a guy is big all over, that's one thing. However, I must say, the "beer belly" is a sexual turn-off to me. I don't agree though that it means they should say "a few extra pounds" when describing themselves. They really can be average and just have a beer belly.

People's self esteem issues really surface when they try internet dating. They think that everyone wants an athletic partner so they put athletic as their body type even though they know that as soon as someone views their pics they'll know they are not athletic. Same goes for profiles. Read any profile on here and you'll find the one thing they all share is that they all say they are looking for someone fit,in shape, athletic,or trim. I hope people like that are aware that even though some people may be a little out of shape that with hard work and support they can become fit. I myself am focusing more on health and fitness now, but despite that finding a partner who is willing to support me and work out with me is proving tougher than I thought.

IceQueen, do I look like a have a beer belly?

Guys are so quick to judge a female if she has a few extra pounds . . .

So do women, I assure you, from what men that don't look like Brad Pitt or are overweight have been saying.

hey i completly agree with you, i be honest a list myself as i would descibe others and i think that because of that i dont get the replies, yet i find the same with the men that they are decieving theier size, im sure that its all about the ego, maybe they should stop being so critical of what the size is and judge the person for who they are not thier perception of what size they are

Thats why a pic tells the real story, don't even bother whether they state athletic, slim, a few extra pounds etc, just look at their pic.

If they are wearing baggy clothes and state athletic and are still unsure, request them to post a topless pic LoL

Its all personal opinion really, what seems athletic to one person may not be to another.

Some people aren't attracted to certain body types. It doesn't necessary mean that they are shallow. Would you date someone that you are unattracted to because he is a nice man?

Too funny, I get to see this all the time and for me very annouying when women write this (a hour of yoga does not make a person Athletic).

Hey how about "average" that is worse, I have seen so many people who are averge and in fact have more than a few extra pounds even BBW.

Some male friends think they are so in shape and I often say "yes, when you were 20 and 2000 2-4s earlier", so yes judge away on men, we do it for women.

I would like you to tell a pro or college football player that is 6'4 380 that has a beer gut he is not athletic. It all depends on what kind of athlete you are. These are the definitions of athlete, I dont see no beer gut anywhere. Maybe you should ask what type of athlete they are instead of being critical of a picture.

I think it depends on the picture - and how big the beer belly is. If the belly is hanging beyond the belt line, then I would say that would qualify as a few pounds overweight.

The danger for people is confusing lack of tone/definition with being a few pounds. I go to the gym 4 -5 times a week and would consider myself as having a slim athletic build, but I don't have a six pack in my abs - it's just not toned at all. A lack of tone does not imply an inability to see one's toes - the true measure of being overweight or not.

I'm such a cool guy, even my fat wants to hang out with me, like some kinda high-lipid groupie. I ran 450 miles last year, bike and hike all over the place, work out 4-6 times a week, and still keep my gut. So you know what? Screw the BMI. Screw the body types designations, and the arrogant bulimic skinny ass that delivered it.

I'm 190 lbs but I put "Athletic" because it's lean muscle weight. I'm only 11% bodyfat, but according to the "Body Mass Index" I'm obese.
