I'm such a cool guy, even my fat wants to hang out with me,

I feel your pain - have you tried doing crunches?

I've seen thin non-muscular guys put athletic too

I'm just a thunder thigh away from a few extra pounds

Women soooo do this too, but I digress.

I am big, I will admit to that, the pictures give me away though, lol. I do play rugby though, which is an athletic sport, so there is a temptation to put "athletic". But I'm also realistic. In my mind, I know what an athlete "looks like", someone like Derek Jeter or Tom Brady for instance. Then of course, comes the debate, well, what defines an athlete? Which can go on forever, depending on what is determined a sport.

There are some guys who have the athletic look but don't play any sports, or workout, they've just been blessed with awesome genes. Wouldn't they be lying too?

When I had a full body pic posted, all the men who wrote to me did not believe that I weighed as much as I do. In fact they said they thought I looked like I weigh much less. There are people like me, who are more solid, and it is hard to guess at our weight.
Well, I went with the closest category I could find on here, but I am not tall, so I do think they could redo the "body type" section and add some other choices, if it helps.

ummm nope, although you are far away lol

True, I could have a better pic up---but I admit I like that shot because it's kind of mysterious in a way.

It could also have something to do with the term "average". What a bland term that is. Who wants to be known as "average" at anything?
Also consider that the new average in the overweight West causes confusion. People who are overweight might consider themselves to now be average, compared to everyone else they see around them.
I am not overweight, but I am not athletic either, so I was stuck with "average" as a description.
I totally agree though, I see a lot of women's descriptions that are patently incorrect, and I am sure that the women would say the same about many men's descriptions too.

Personally, I interpreted athletic as someone capable of playing sports or being active without looking like a fool.

They should certainly have more options available when defining oneself. Infact, they should have a weight/height ratio system so you can filter those people out who do not meet your criteria.

Is it that important anyway?

weight is easily lost or gained, i recently trained for a road race..and lost 11 pounds in 4 weeks..now most of it is back...ironically my date at the time was horrified and practically ordered me to put the weight back on lol (id dropped from to 181 to 170 pounds)

Its a cliched saying, but surely the person is more important than a few pounds???. You can change bodyshape, not so easily the sort of person you are.

I think it's tough to pick a persons body type from 5-6 different vague categories... Take myself for example, I have "athletic" selected on my profile, yet I could also fit into the "thin" category, seeing as I'm 6'3" and around 145lbs. Then there is the ever-popular "average" which is pretty much open to interpretation these days. So personally I would ignore the selection people have made and make your own assumptions from the pictures they have posted... but that's just me.

You are so right. Lots of people are "in between" and sometimes don't know which category they fall into.
That might explain the difference between what they perceive themselves to be, and how others perceive them.
But as far as "body type" , that is purely physical...you are stating the shape of your body are you not?

I pretty sure athletic means your athletic looking, all guys know the meaning. there is no black and white on the subject, its a body type, if your athletic, but your body type is few extra pound well then your a few extra pounds. I know alot of athletes that fall under few extra pounds. Maybe they should put muscular as an option, to deconflict the body type images people think they are

I find it hilarious when a girl says she has an average figure and is really the size of the bus. Completely irrelevant I know but I had to add my two pennies worth.

I couldn't agree more with you. But it is on both sides of the fence I see (not putting blame on anyone), but you look at athletic and see someone clearly overweight or not at the optimal "athletic" look or the "average" and clearly "way" over that. I know it's hard to judge yourself, but everyone else is even if you choose to ignore. Unfortunately, we have a society of no matter what anyone says, looks is a big part (and I'm not excluded), but still I think personality, values, morals, trustworthyness, etc are also a gigantic part and can make up for the other part. Just my little two cents, but hey, what the hell do I know, I'm single and on an on-line dating service, go figure , everyone have a great weekend.

Description of athletic type body = muscular and fit with no bulges
Description of person who is athletic = someone who is capable and fit to compete no matter what body type.
If it ask for a body type say your body type, if it ask you for your personality say your personality.

Oh come on now women do this all the time. Heck on many other weight threads I have seen some women claim that a few extra lbs is up to 100. Shheeesh.
Any way.

On topic.
I don't know why people lie about their weight. I weigh 180pounds and carry very little fat. In fact my waist size is 30.My profile says athletic but thats only because there isn't a muscular option.

It is just amusing when someone who is obviously more than "a few extra pounds" puts down "athletic".

I consider myself fit ..... with some trimming to come with my long trip cycling this summer!

But, when one finds walking difficult ......... athletic is just not it!

Some men and some women write "athletic" because they play 1 or more sports I think. They may be "athletes" and in good shape but don't have an "athletic" body type. It can be confusing.

No its not confusing. They are Liars.
Look at that box, what does it say? BODY TYPE.
It doesnt say, your ACTIVITY LEVEL.

Hey, at least I'm honest. I have a bit of a beer gut, so I put "A few extra pounds". Though, going by my pic I could totally get away with putting "average" down, but I'm too honest.

Athletic is not a state of mind lol. Just becasue someone thinks they can lift heavey objects and play a sport a couple times a week through one season of the year .... Does not an Athletic make.

Athetic = Toned, fit, no fluffy parts, nothing should jiggle when you walk, and last but not least, you should know what the equiptment in the gym is, and how to use it.

Obviously this is not me LMAO I have average in my profile, but to be quite honest I have no idea what body type I am. I thought I did at one time, like when I started an account on POF, however after reading forums I am not so sure anymore. I have given up on trying to figure out the online dating body type or weight thing, and go by what my Dr says. He says I am average, so I will keep it as average.

I've wondered about this myself. I put down "a few extra pounds" for myself in my POF profile, but I think a lot of people would put me in the average category. At the same time, I am really more than just a few extra pounds overweight, I am actually about 50 pounds overweight. I just don't look it. (My doctor was really surprised at my weight, she thought I was only about 20 pounds overweight by looking at me.) I am very well proportioned (the fat's well distributed), curvy, fairly toned, with only a small tummy. (I thought about choosing curvy, but that seems to be code for "obese" these days.) I am not saggy and lumpy like so many overweight women are (and plenty of "average," and even some "thin" women are saggy and mushy, too). So I want to be honest in my profile, yet at the same time not make people think I am fatter than I really am. If I decide to try Internet dating, I'll post some photos, but no bikini shots.

ath·let·ic Audio Help [ath-let-ik] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective 1. physically active and strong; good at athletics or sports: an athletic child.
2. of, like, or befitting an athlete.
3. of or pertaining to athletes; involving the use of physical skills or capabilities, as strength, agility, or stamina: athletic sports; athletic training.
4. for athletics: an athletic field.
5. Psychology. (of a physical type) having a sturdy build or well-proportioned body structure. Compare asthenic (def. 2), pyknic (def. 1).

So you can mean one of the 5, I am over weight so what I do lots of pushups, weights, biking, martial arts, and walking. Does that mean I'm not athletic? There are plenty of people who are not athletic who are you shape but that don't workout or can even perform any athetlic exercises.

I mean a guy knows we are going to look at his pic if it is posted, so why try to deceive?

I noticed girls do the exact opposite. They undersell their beauty and shape. If they're slim, they'll say they're average; if they're average, they'll say they've got a few extra pounds; hardly any say "athletic", "toned" or "ripped". Typically, the girls who say that indiscriminately have no photos posted whatsoever.
