What's average these days? The average person is overweight. It all depends on the person. Just like being athletic people can see it as being fit with muscles while others look at it as being able to performance certain exercises. Better off to ask than assume.

Most males are idiots when it comes to reality.

Men love to live in a constant dream state of glory days from the past.
Most believe they have a full head of hair and can easily pass as late 20s.

We should all except ourselves as human beings that age.
We should be more concerned by what is inside our hearts as opposed to what is on the outside.

That being said -- I have no idea why a majority of males with serious beer guts believe that they can depict themself as athletic!
Possibly vision and judgement seriously decline with age?

maybe the stomach is a 'large' muscle in their minds (as opposed to adipose tissue) lol

the description is athletic AND toned - toned implies muscle not fat, does it not ?! ;)

i think most women are somewhat more flexible regarding body styles than are men. personally, i prefer ideal (somewhat, but NOT overly muscular), but i'd say plus or minus 15-20 lbs, depending on how the man carries it. if it gets into the realm of obvious 'beer gut' then, it becomes a turnoff. likewise, if the guy looks like skeletor!

Most males are full blown idiots when it comes to facing reality.

Men love to live in a constant dream state of glory days from the past.
Overweight (in the real world) equals husky ~~> equals " football player build"!
Most believe they have full heads of hair (that can somehow be polished) and that they can easily pass as late 20s (when in fact they look as if they were born in 1920).

I believe we should accept ourself as humans that age. Gravity takes a hold when we have been on the planet for awhile. Women as well as men should be celebrate every wrinkle and accept every layer of Rolo IceCream.

We should concentrate on what is inside our hearts as opposed to what is on the outside. However -- at one point in the dating scene we must face a reality mirror and not fool ourself when it comes to presenting our physical appearance.

That being said -- I have no idea why the majority of males with serious beer guts believe that they can depict themself as athletic! Maybe they are drunk when they fill out the online description?

Well, I consider myself average but after reading this thread I'm not so sure. I don't consider myself thin either. I'm 5'2" and I weigh about 135. I'm not 10 to 20 pounds overweight....is that what average means. I'm within my normal BMI.

When I met one guy he told me I definitely looked 'thinner' in person. I'd rather state that I'm say I'm average and when I meet someone they are pleasantly suprised at my appearance than say I'm skinny and then they think "whoa, that girl is not thin!"

Just count me as still confused....

Need a fridge on casters.
Walking to and from the fridge constitute's exercise.(does it not)?
Sorry IQ 07
I consider myself athletic but slim,I do keep fit, play sport and am on the go all the time.
And I have an occasional beer, but without the belly.
Average seems to have quite a wide scope .

You look young enough to turn any, absolutely any, woman into thin or athletic. You chase them around the block with a baseball bat with nails sticking out of the bat (the baseball one, silly!), or around the football field on the runner's tracks brandishing an erection the size of a baseball bat. Please don't forget: no nails.

Do that every day three times to Rita McNeal and you'll have a toned, ripped, athletic, nervous wreck on your hands, who is extremely happy.

Give me a break. So far 90%: and I'm not exagerating; of the women I contact have little or no resemblance to some of their pictures. Almost all are at least 20-30 pounds heavier and some over 50 pounds heavier. Whats the best one is when 30 year olds put their prom photos up. I met one girl and she was at least 40 pounds heavier than her photo. The U.S. has a huge obesity problem and if a women is 40 pounds overweight in her 20's who knows what her health will be like in her 40's; no thanks.

Guys do it I'm sure too but women are at least the same if not worse.

mthomjmar,

You are right, as some have also stated ...... this applies to both women and men ....

... but I will say this ... and I rarely generalize ........

... there appears to be a double standard ..... most men want "gorgeous" which means thin, fit, and/or athletic ......... even if they are not that themselves ......

... women seem to "settle for" or "accept" ..... whichever way you want to look at it ... men who are "less fit" than they are ......

.... yes, many will argue that it is since "money" is the other attraction ........ this may be so ....... I personally do feel that this is so with many women ...... I know that I will be pounced on by some women when I say this ..... but, even though many women claim their independence and want to be treated as "equals", they still want their man to have an enormous amount of money that they can use ..... btw .... I do not fall in that category at all!

In the end we will believe what we want to believe .........

Body type is kind of like beauty or porn, it's all in the eye of the beholder and even if we can't define it we know it when we see it. I blade 10 miles at a shot, I hike, I'm getting back into cycling and I lift weights 3 times a week. I don't consider myself athletic but if lack of a beer belly is your requirement for athleticism sign me up.

To me an athletic man is more of the frat boy image...at least down here in Florida. Thin waist with arms and necks as thick as my thighs. (Whether or not you need to be a liberal arts/communications/business major to also be athletic is open to debate as well.) At 5'9 and less than 150 soaking wet I'm thin, even if I am in better shape than all of my friends save one who is 10 years younger.

Athletic versus a few extra pounds versus muscular. I guess this depends on the person's interpretation. Perhaps if people are looking for more specific categorizing of people why do they not add to athletic the term for those that are able to participate in sports and lead an active lifestyle, a muscular category. Can it be that difficult to add an extra selection in this drop down list? It may help for those people looking for someone that is overly muscular, veins popping out, beer can crushing on the forehead, and 24/7 in the gym.

MthomJmark! You're my best friend. I was getting quite bitter about my batting average getting dates from this site (0.000) and getting women to talk to me by email, other than rejection notes (0.001).

Now you tell us it's not worth it anyway. That's actually great news for me. It means I can turn my trend around 180 degrees. I was becoming very bitter, I said to myself, these are really hard women to please, why do they do this to me -- but if 90 percent of them are useless anyway, then I don't feel so bad any more.

So let me get this straight -- when they say they've got a few extra pounds yet they look delectable on their posted pics... we should believe their words, not their looks.

Seeing is not believing. I like that. Hurray and yippeeeee!

...considering that the words next to the descriptor directly say "body type" then those that check athletic just because they play football once a month are uhhh fibbing perhaps.

Or perhaps not. There are many very active people out there that simultaneously have quite a few extra pounds. You can watch one of them next week grind out 200+ miles on the STP bike ride. -- me. I for one bet you couldn't do it. So screw you.

Remember the FRIDGE of the Chicago Bears

420 #........42 " vertical leap, ran the 40 in 4.6 seconds.........Ran the stairs of Soldier Field daily.................................OVERWEIGHT .......YES...........ATHLETIC.........YES

I am overweight for sure, But I can make a case for athletic as well, I can still put my palms on the floor, do the splits, backbends ect..........and I shinney up scaffolding and 40 ft ladders with regularity and ease.

Its all perspective ........I went out with a woman from a dating site that said she was athletic..........AND SHE was ....she could have ripped my arms off and beat me with the bloody stumps. She was also overweight

^^^Perry may have been an athlete, but his body type certainly wasn't that of a typical athlete. That dude was fat.

It's pretty clear that the box is for body type not lifestyle type. I know of LOTS of people personally who call themselves athletic when they are bordering on obese but play golf, curling, and/or slo-pitch. Yea, not a lot of athleticism required for any of those sports. I'm sure more bowlers would call themselves athletes, as would dart and pool players, but really?

If not for my gut I'd call myself athletic and in pretty good shape. At 220 I can outrun most of my friends who work out daily on a elliptical or treadmill (can't run on hard ground for extended periods due chronic shin splints stemming from surgery to both legs), and I run a 4.4s 40M. That additional stomach weight though prevents me from listing myself as athletic and I feel good about that. Average is okay. I'm sure you could say I'm a few extra pounds, because there's probably 15-20 pounds there but what's the average number we're going with here.

I see the other end a lot too as someone above me mentioned: women posting a few extra when they are shown in mini-skirts or bikinis looking fantastic, and not the thick kind of fantastic either! I guess people have different perceptions! One of my close friends is about 5'7", probably 180, and wears at least a 16 I'd say, I'm not too certain of women's sizes. She listed herself on here as athletic because she worked out and golfed and played tennis. I kept trying to show her that it says BODY TYPE, but it proved fruitless...

Cause guys can be as bad as the size 24 woman that puts "average"?

Mine says a few extra pounds. Yet I mountain bike, train in Krav Maga, power lift and compete in a few other sports. I've had a few women that have met me tell me I should change it to athletic.

Sorry, I don't think a guy with over about 12% body fat and without a better than average musculature can qualify as athletic. I have a way better than average musculature, I don't have the body fat down. No need to lie. I'm a big ole boy. I'm built like a tank, I don't wanna be one of the little skinny guys. I like being able to dead lift well over 500 lbs lol

I think this goes to what a man considers "athletic" vs a woman's perception.

As a gym rat myself, I see really fat ugly men who can lift the world because they're so strong. They would probably write down "athletic" because they are so strong vs. that slim dude with wash board abs they consider a twit.

Us guys see it on the woman's side too...trust me. "a few extra pounds means 10 pounds overweight MAX" Beyond that you're FAT!

Way to hit them weight boss but you and I both know body fat is a function of your diet and not athleticism.
Even a pro bodybuilder will carry %20 bodyfat while bulking. I'd say you could/should change your profile
but I've found women don't really care that much in the first place until they get to know and like you.

I love it when people deny that they judge on appearances. EVERYONE does to some extent or another. I do, don't deny it, don't intend on changing.

It's pretty simple. Take a 350 lb woman for instance. I don't care if she invented the cure for cancer. She's fat, fat is ugly, getting fat is a sign you don't care about yourself. And don't give me that BS about having medical issues that caused it. Here is a simple fact for ya, if you take in less calories than you expend, you won't gain weight.
If your addiction to food is stronger than your desire to get into decent shape, well, happy short life.

If you like to lie to yourself and say that you're just fine the way you are, no you're not. Fat is unattractive, it's limiting, and chances are you stink. The ONLY excuse for being significantly overweight is if you're packing on mass to turn into muscle (me) or you are pregnant or had a kid within 6 months.

There is no excuse for being morbidly obese. Get off the couch, get on a bike, throw some plate in the air on a bar instead of throwing a plate in the air and clearing it with a fork, right into your mouth.

Oh, and yeah, I know I'm an a$$hole. I don't care. A few extra pounds is one thing. People to lazy to get off the couch that only know how to eat high carb and high calorie food is another.

Try to keep in mind when you eat, food does not exist for your pleasure. It exists to fuel your muscles and bodily functions. If your car runs on 87 octane, putting nitro methane in it is stupid. If your body will function on 2100 calories a day, putting 3000 in it is stupid.

And I say all this as a former 350 lb fat **stard that started giving a damn about himself and his family. I didn't make excuses for being fat, and once I realized how disgusting I was, I went on a diet and lost it.

Of course we live in a free country so each person can do what they want, just don't expect me to be ok with the smell, lack of ability to walk a few miles, the low self esteem BS covered up by the "I'm a bbw" bs. Shut up, no your not. bbw is an oxymoron.

Flame away, I'll be on the single track on my 29er
