Way to hit them weight boss but you and I both know body fat is a function of your diet and not athleticism.
Even a pro bodybuilder will carry %20 bodyfat while bulking. I'd say you could/should change your profile
but I've found women don't really care that much in the first place until they get to know and like you.
O

Oh yeah, I still carry a good bit of bodyfat, probably near 25% because I'm in the process of thrashing my back, shoulders and arms. Years of football and power lifting built my lower body better than my upper and the upper body faded easier because I wasn't using it as much after I got hurt.

Jay Cutler, the current Mr Olympia runs about 280 during the season IIRC and about 330 while bulking. I've seen him in the off season and he looked straight fat.

I keep it saying a few extra pounds because women see the belly before they see the thighs, calves and arms. I'd rather have em think I was modest than a liar lol.

Being cut does not mean being athletic.

I don't get why women get those two confused. Look up the word 'athletic' in the dictionary. Here, let me do you all a favor and post a definition up.

1: of or relating to athletes or athletics2: characteristic of an athlete; especially : vigorous, active

Now, the definition of an athlete...

: a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina

Being cut with a six pack does not equal to athleticism. It just means you work out, playing a sport is what makes an athlete, a 260 lbs football player is an athlete, he has an athletic body that is equivalent to the sport he plays with. Don't blame the guys who put down the weight, blame POF for not having an accurate description.

After reading everbodys thoughts I have decided to change my profile from athletic. To just plain old average.. That might even be pushing it a bit... Maybe it should really say a few extra pounds.. Considering I'm 5ft 11inches tall and about 215lbs..

I suppose the big problem here is the complete lack of options to choose from, take me for example i'm only 5'9" and i weigh about 240 lbs, however i have a lot of muscle which unfortunatley yes is covered by a layer of fat like most blokes.
Most men don't wan't to put "a few extra pounds" because this doesn't give an accurate description of them (admittedly neither does saying they are athletic).
Now as i have said i have a stomach on me, but i can run a mile or two a day quite happily, along with cycling , and weights. So how would i be categorised? really neither atheletic nor a few extra pounds would cover me, perhaps if there was another option we could put more accurate body descriptions on, (i myself have put "a few extra pounds" however someone looking at me may say im that im just plain fat) but then i suppose it wouldn't make that much difference as a fella who thinks he is athletic when he quite clearly has a gut probabely isn't going to be a trustworthy person anyway after all if they can lie when they are trying to attract you what are they going to get up to when they are with you?
I supppose the easy way to put your body description is if you have a super toned body then you're description is athletic otherwise it's anything but. After all the description is relating to how your body appears visually not what it is capable of.
But lets face it a lot of people think higher of themselves than they should do so not much is going to change.
But to answer the question after all this rambling, yes i do think that those who call themselves athletic when they quite clearly aren't, are doing at for there ego the problem of course is that they get shot down when people tell them what they really look like.

Ah, see that's what's cool about being a guy. Technically, athletes come in all sizes. It just depends on the sport.

A linebacker can be 300 lbs. and have a gut so big he hasn't seen his feet in years, and he can still consider himself athletic because he's an important part of a football team. Thus technically, he's an athlete.

They might have a muscular upper body/legs, and a beer gut. Personally, I like a little jelly with my belly, but they have to have hot arms/legs to go along with it. I'm a few extra pounds, but I put average. Some guy told me to, so I did it. I'm a sheep, oh no!!

It's a question of self-perception. They'll pick the term that is most flattering. Its suitability is in the eye of the beholder. There'll always be debate about the words someone chooses... I guess it's up to you to decide whether or not it's a relationship dealbreaker.

I know a guy who does this. He is at least 40 pounds overweight, a 38 inch waist, but because he runs occassionally, he is "athletic". BMI was actually in the "obese" range. then had the nerve to gripe about my 5'5" 122 lbs.

forum101,

Hopefully he didn't think you had some extra weight! Wow!
Perhaps you did not have enough weight for him!

I met someone recently who also did not have a realistic view of himself .... I am being nice here ..... and he expected someone much better than himself ..... something wrong with that picture ..... his character did not make up for it.

Simply put, forget numbers.

Your answer is as easy as this: do they jiggle when they walk?

Strictly speaking, I am over my ideal "weight" but I dont jiggle when I walk. I lift weights, keep toned, and can still hold my own playing sports, so I use the athletic description.

Pretty much my philosophy. I had myself listed as Athletic for a week there but changed it to Average. I jog, I bike, I lift weights, but as soon as they realize they can't see my abs I'm gonna be called on it. People are so picky.

I've been burned on this more than once by ladies . I think people are not honest with themselves when it come to body type. I guess I should not be surprised that the guys do it to. This is my personal opinion on the subject and could apply to men and women. Athletic- low percentage of body fat, tone and fit. You have the ideal weight for your body type. Average-15 to twenty five pounds overweight for your body type. A few extra pounds-25 pounds to 45 pounds over ideal body weight for your body type. BBW or BBM 45 pound to whatever over weight. I think the majority of people in America over 30 years old are in the few extra pound range. Honesty with ones self and others are key to finding the relationship we are all looking for of that I am sure. And it would save us all a lot of time, frustration and heartache.

hey natural energy. That guy was actually trying to make me into his idea of the perfect female specimen. Do as I say, not as I do. I could write a book on all the things wrong with that guy. total narcissist. but that's another forum topic.

forum101,

Amazing ...... simply amazing .... what more can I say!
... some people are simply amazing ...........

.... best not to include them into your circle of friends, that is for sure, let alone your one special romantic partner ....... hopefully you did not stay with him too long ....

... sounds like someone not in touch with reality ............ if they don't see themselves in a realistic light or you in a realistic light .......... a control freak ............ potential stalker to me ......

perhaps his eyes see opposite ....... his extra pounds looked like he was fit as a fiddle .......... and your fit body looked overweight ...... something like "Shallow Hal" (I think that was the name of the movie)

The problem is less with the fact that the majority are in this excess range, but that those in that majority feel they are justified as saying average because of it. I think average should still be classified as that acceptably healthy weight range for your height, give or take a few to account for excess bone mass and how some people carry extra weight proportionately.

When I think of average, I think of less than 10 or 15lbs of extra weight -but maybe I'm wrong. A few extra pounds to me would probably be 15-25 and then BBW would be anything over 25 extra pounds-depending on the build, etc. I somehow have a problem classifying 'a few' as 45lbs! I seem to think the AMA recommended weight chart is a good guideline. If you're in the healthy range of scale, you're fine. Of course there are exceptions where the person is really muscular and they're obviously going to be heavier than their 'ideal' weight but where muscle weighs more than fat, that's to be expected.

Athletic would be someone who stays in super shape either playing sports, extensive physical labor or working out.

Just because one played football in college 20 yrs ago, does not mean they remain 'athletic'.

Agreed......

I am with you on this "happy", and athletic would be someone that has significantly more muscle tone and less body fat, and that would be in the 10% or less for body fat.

Average would be those that are in the range of the BMI tables of 21 to 24, and a few pounds over would be those that are 25 to 26.

The obese would then be 27 and higher, which puts a significant number of both men and women in that category.........

When looking for someone to attract and hopefully date, one should offer what they are looking for, or explain what they are, yet hoping to be with.

There are a number of both men and women that prefer and are attracted to those that have a different body type from theirs, and that is all "fine and dandy", as long as the both of you are attracted to each other and comfortable with that as well.

If more would put recent pictures on their profiles that show full body shots, as well as clear close up ones, we would not have as much confusion as we currently do, especially when "meeting and greeting", and the one you meet is not the one stated on the profile.

Just my opinion........

BMI tables of 21 to 24

Of course, for those of us who actually work out, BMI will make us obese. Case in point, at 6'0 and 190 lbs, people tell me that I kinda look skinny. Enter 6'0 and 190 into a BMI calculator and it will tell you that I'm obese.

Understood.....but if your body fat is 10% or less, then you are not obese and the BMI is adjusted for that and working out.

Muscle is more dense than fat, so therefore your weight can be above the BMI table yet you are overall thinner. There is not one right or wrong, just guidelines to help those trying to connect with others.

When living a healthy life style and wanting to maintain that, you use the BMI and a fat calculation to help get a total picture of what you are for your body frame. No absolutes, but guidelines to help convey and connect with those that you care to share with.

Good luck with your workout's, and keep searching for those that fit into your guidelines of what you want, and what they want.

Just my opinion......

There's no room for interpretation. We all know inherently that "athletic" means "in good shape", as in, works out, nice body, no beer gut, no flab.
Anyone who bends the meaning is going to get found out anyway, sooner or later.

I don't look at men's profiles much, but women do this, too. I would be surprised if guys didn't.

My favorite is "average." In the US, the average person is overweight. Depending on the part of the country, that could be a lot overweight. Women take full advantage of that in their profiles. Guys probably do, too.

I don't worry about that though. I don't bother with profiles that don't have pics... Not usually anyway. I get a chuckle every now and then, when I compare the pic to the body type. I don't see any point in getting upset about it though.
