Nothing wrong with competitiveness, Davood, but I'm not into the "anything you can do I can do better" kind. Isn't it okay to RE-freakin-LAX???
Fair enough, the holier than thou, or brow beating and childish types of competitiveness are tiresome and degrading for both parties.
but the kind of competitiveness im thinking of is where you enjoy your hobbies TOGETHER instead of using them as an escape from the person.
So many couples I see don't share their hobbies, and they both lead two lives, one with each other and one with their hobbies, which I believe is a restriction on the person, because it makes it harder to grow their hobbies.
Granted there are some demographics at play. for example certain hobbies as the OP mentioned are more populated by one sex than another sex, but unless that is your only interest i'm sure you can meet guys / girls who share some of your hobbies, the last generation or so of people have much more "cross" training as far as hobbies are concerned.. i think this wont't be a big problem in 20 years. | |

That guy whose ego you bruised by knowing more about tires than him must have a VERY fragile ego.....

On a more serious note -
I don't think you should tone down or change anything. Hey, if you got to change something about yourself for a guy, then do you really wanna be with that dude!? Think about it. There are lot of guys out there (like the gentleman above) who appreciate practical knowledge. It is all about chemistry my friend.

For those of you who are curious as to how I know about this stuff, is that I have a lot of brothers who didn't want me scared on the side of the road freaking out over what to do if my (now old and long dead) car ever broke down. I grew up with a ton of guys who lived, ate, and breathed cars, and my girlfriends dad's who were mostly strong believers that girls should know how to take care of themselves so we never had to wholly depend on someone else to get us out of trouble. And my daddy who was a firm believer that if a girl could own her own car, she should bloody well be able to look after it.
I have been a crew captain for a good friend of mine when he was racing his 1970 LeMans, and currently am only one of 10 seniority girls in my workplace of about 118 unionized employees.
The problem, OP, is not that you're intelligent and able to do you own oil/filter changes, it's that you seem to feel the need to defend your abilities, as evidenced in your above quote, which translates into insecurity. Some of it also comes across as bragging, like the 1 in 10 seniority girls (I honestly don't know what that means) and being a crew captain. They sound like things to be proud of, but as accomplishments that none of us asked about, it looks like bragging.
Men don't have problems with intelligent women. Men have problems with intelligent women who feel the need to constantly air lists of accomplishments, successes, and abilities to to anyone within earshot. Women don't like to listen to a guy drone on and on about how much money he makes, and likewise men don't want to have to listen day after day how a woman can fix her own car. Generally, those who brag are merely covering up their own insecurities. | |

But it seems more like your question is "Why are the guys I am dating turned off when I prove them wrong about car stuff?"
I'll tell you why, a lot of guys out there think they actually know what's going on under the hood of their car because they watched Fast and the Furious or played Gran Turismo. These guys also think that they're experts on such subject matter, and emasculating them with your knowledge hurts their self-esteem, making them less of a man.
That and automotive related stuff is typically a male dominated speciality.
Look at it this way, I'm sure a lot of women out there would be really freaked out if a guy had an opinion on makeup brands or something. Mostly women wear makeup, but I'm sure there's some guys out there that are into makeup or something.

Attitude is indeed everything. Some deluded dames think they're an alpha female when in the end they're just a b___h. What you are is of course up to you.
So OP, answer me this: What has a bigger carbon footprint; a Prius or a hummer? LOL.
In all seriousness mature men are not afraid of intelligent women. Perhaps you should look beyond the high school shop class? Forgive me, I'm feeling...articulate. | |

The only reason I could think of why a guy might not be attracted to a girl who is smart, and visa versa, is if they present themselves as so smart, their is no dependance on the person you are with. I tend to think this as more of an initial feeling that can be easily overcome. I think both girls and boys feel the need to be needed.
